Talksaft, don't know which age bracket you fall into but us older fans will remember before the Windows. You could buy and sell all year round. Sounds good ......... not so for the smaller to middle sized clubs.
Picture this ...... your a club cruising along, not setting the world on fire but holding your own in say 14th place, entering into March, on course to survive, a bigger club west ham, Newcastle are struggling in the bottom three, they see your star player/s as a quick fix to rescue themselves, the players become unsettled you end up having to sell, your form flops, theirs improves, they stay up you go down.
Or your doing fine, top half, but a glory club like man ure come in, you lose your manager big ron, midfielders Bryan Robson and remi mosses all in one hit, your season fades and your future becomes uncertain, you end up in division three, 16 years out of the top flight.
To try and stop this they created the meat market ....... you start with a squad and have to manage with that until the next meat market. This caused problems for smaller clubs because glory clubs signed anything with two legs and had a squad reminiscent to the cast of 500 to cover for injuries etc so they then limited squads to 25 plus kids.
Pretty sure that is the whole picture please correct me if I am wrong.
Heard a rumour we're in talks with a quality player with bags of premier league experience, fits into our transfer policy, on verge of signing, just a couple of bits to sort out with Eric cantona's agent. Right age bracket ....... on a free.
