I am afraid I think Dancing is being a realist. As I pointed out on another thread we haven't a player in midfield or up front who has completed more than ONE full season in the league football. If you compare the known quality of our signings with other teams in the division we are way down, and we had very little quality by the end of last season anyway.
Unfortunately our squad currently looks like nothing so much as the ragbag of hope and hidden potential GC got together last season. It's wildly unbalanced and contains no one who looks like the b of the bang.
But in Division Two a great deal of any success hinges upon how very similar levels of talent are deployed and developed, how team spirit holds together, how fit and confident the players feel and how strongly THEY believe they are capable of winning games. We have a lot of younger players. They might be easily discouraged by early failure. Equally youthful enthusiasm might carry them through.
I'd want at least 33/1 to make us even a viable bet to win the league. I'd currently list us amongst the favourites for relegation, not only because of our squad and manager, but also because of our off-field situation.
That doesn't mean I, or supporters like me, want to see such things. It is our worst fear! I want Joe Rowley to be buzzing through our every opponents' midfield. I want Ricky German and Gozie Ugwu to come through and prove the talent I think they possess. I'd love to see Laurence Maguire looking far cooler and more comfortable than brother Harry at Leicester. I want Tommy to come back and show us he's at least one of the best in the lower leagues. I'll be delighted if GC is capable of achieving that as will Dancing and every other detractor. We'll heap praise on him because he'll have done it against all the odds! And we'll probably find ourselves in Division One looking for a manager because he'll be having another go at the Championship with a bigger club with fewer problems.
