These appointments have been widely predicted since the day after the election, so no real surprises there. What has definitely happened is a softening of the rhetoric surrounding some key thing he said he would do straight away. He has stated now that he will not replace Obamacare immediately nor in its entirety, he will not build a physical wall along the whole border, he will likely not be appointing a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary, he will not be altering the gay marriage laws as they stand and he will only be deporting known illegal criminals. All of these were central to the hysteria he created in his followers and all have now changed since he won. Now that is no guarantee that anything else will change, and I have little optimism of that or of his success, but it is a very small step in the right direction.
