I remember the late 60s when Villa slid from the 1st to the 3rd in consecutive seasons.
The Argus showed a back-page photo of the Witton End on one very wet Saturday while the match was being played, and we all had a laugh that night in the pub, counting the actual spectators!
Their fans actually, eventually, became very humble. We had a few Villa mates and we'd take them down the Brummie Road for a treat to cheer them up. Not only did they marvel at our football, but they had nothing like our Brummie Road back then. Those high-pitched "VI-LLA VI-LLA" (with little kids' tones) started back then, because their Holte End mob consisted of about 100 youngsters and 100 adults. (The BRE was about 3,000 strong at that stage, and about one in 10 had a flag or a banner to wave.)
It wasn't till 7-8 years later that they got their pride back (and we revelled in their lean years). But they came back brasher than ever. Have been ever since.

Be careful what you wish for, the big bigger brother will be back and punching us on the nose in the process I have no doubt.
On the other hand, I did chuckle too myself when they missed a penalty on Saturday at Preston, that would of only halved the scoreline and their loss was already confirmed. I must admit being a child of the 80s and 90s, I took way to much $hit off my Villa mates and the bragging rights were always theirs. We aren't the biggest club in the midlands and some would argue that Forest's history would go toe to toe with the Vile, that aside, I'm laughing my testicles off at their demise.
I couldn't help thinking at the weekend " feel the pain Villa, feel the pain, we've had too many years of mediocrity with questionable managers and owners, it's your turn now you miserable barstewards, enjoy!!!!!
Im not bitter, really! I just hope they enjoy the real side of football and all of the crap it brings with it, they will be back at the top table sooner or later, lets just hope it shuts them up a little and gives them some much needed humility!!! We can all hope!

I dare say we can all try a little humility (Albion fans included!) - but I won't stop taking the piss while I have the chance!
Incidentally, Forest are far from being toe-to-toe with the Vile - nor with us even. OK, they've won the European Cup TWICE, which is massive, but, apart from when they were managed by Cloughie, they've done next to nothing, and aren't even close to ourselves in the All-time Leagues:-
Villa are 5th in the All-time League placings and 5th in the All-time F.A.Cup.
Forest 21st " " " 15th "
(WBA) 11th " " " 9th "
Even Blues (19th) are above Forest in the League, and 19th in the F.A.Cup

Hopefully two or three years minimum out of the top division will decimate their seal base and the loss of earnings will put them so far behind the rest of the established premier league (us mainly if we can stay there) that if they do return they will be playing permanent catch up. Better still do a Leeds, and be decades out ...... We were out 16 years and still even with good directorship are still struggling to get back to our top eight consistency. With their fans attitude they will finder it harder.

Some good points talksaft, I suppose its easy to get caught up in the Cloughie era, when you look at the bigger picture, Villa are the bigger club! But my god it gets rammed down our throat on every occasion, they still live on the 1982 bus and get off at memory lane. Unfortunately for me, our best era preceded my birth in 1976, I've looked at 1000 programs and cuttings and reports from then, my only regret as an Albion fan was not being around then to enjoy them.
I've had the dross of the late 80's and probably our grimmest time in the early 90's under Talbot & Gould et al, but we have come out the other side and we are a far stronger club from our experiences. What I wont do is rub my Villa mates noses in it because I have a little more class than that, but it doesn't stop me chuckling my balls off and taking some enjoyment in their demise!!

Forever young, great post and one which sums up the difference between the two sets of fans. We are magnanimous in victory and supportive in defeat ........ We have class. But as a baggie since early 1970's I am loving seeing the arrogant seals wallowing ........ I still showed my Albion pedigree by not rubbing my villa supporting colleague's nose in their relegation.
