Beefy, I am not trying to devalue what you are doing, I applaud it and it is great to see that it is working.

The point I am trying to make is that there are so many posters on here that have been here from the start, like those I mentioned, who may feel undervalued when they see that posters with one post have two or three times the rep points they have for many hundreds of posts, that is the point I am trying to make.

I think you are probably right that new posters are probably unaware of what a rep point is, so why devalue them?

I would like to think that any new posters would not be put off, but encouraged when they see that they can post what they think and discuss it a rational way, as we are.

Keep up the good work buddy   Wink Thumb up

I'm more intrigued by the star system.
I can understand moderators getting 5 stars but, how and why are they awarded to us mere mortals? Wink
Some days I'm top dog, most days I'm just the lamp post.

The stars on the threads or the stars under your name?

The stars on the threads are a matter of clicking one to five depending how good you think it is. The trouble with that system is that petty folk go around giving the threads of members or boards that they don't like a one star. And believe me we have people who do that. They did it on the old BBC 606, they still do it on JA 606 and it's why we disabled the function on New. Despite that, though, I like the fact you can rate a thread. We just have to pity the saddos who use it as a weapon!

The stars under your name change the more posts you submit as does the user title below your name. You can't amend the number of stars you have. You have to do the work of contributing to the forum to get them! But you can change your user title in the edit profile function on your user cp. You can be the kit man, manager, general dogsbody, the chief sandwich maker, tea lady, whatever you want as long as you keep it clean.  Tongue

Hope that helps.

I wrote a user guide on the old site. Why the hell didn't I keep it?  Doh

Beefy, I applaud you for your efforts but ....... and this is defiantly not sour grapes ....... I have to agree with young Mr Salop. I am employed within the emergency services, due to the nature of the work and the dangers involved there are various levels of commendations awarded for outstanding work, bravely, dedication to duty etc etc, for example things like major fires ... entering burning buildings to save people, events like dealing with the poll tax riot in 1990, responding to train crashes, terrorist incidents on the tube, bomb explosions in Manchester's shopping centre, police officers racing to help at firearms incidents not knowing if they will be a rescuer or another victim, plus the families at home not knowing if their loved ones will walk back thorough the door or be in a box the next time they see them, this is to name but a few ..... these are all incidents for which all 999 services attend .... when the public are running for safety the brave crews of all services are running the other way ....... into the danger zone, FAB, just to lighten the post for us oldies, if I waffle I promise there is a relevant point at the end.
A lot of the first responders who were knee deep in blood, guts and body parts missiles petrol bombs flames and heaven knows what else were awarded commendations from their head of service be it a chief fire officer or a chief constable or director of the ambulance services, for bravery good work etc ..... they are proud to receive them, a rep point if you like, then they see colleagues getting the same awards for producing a new shift pattern , running a tidy office, completing paperwork correctly and on time, the people that put their necks into harms way feel less valued and the whole award means nothing.

I say this from first hand experience .... having received the third highest award available in my service for dealing with a life or death incident where colleagues had been threatened by a man with a gun only to see a suit wearing office waller receive a higher award for doing good paperwork ...... how did I feel. Well I am no longer on the front line response of my service .... why bother, darned if you do darned if you don't.

So again Beefy I applaud your efforts but I have to side with Salop. No offence matey.

As analogies go 4eva that's quite an extreme one haha.

In all fairness though do the guests and posters on this site, regular or not, actually look at the number next to someones name and put more value in that than the content of what they're posting? I doubt they do.

Yes, but whilst I admire genuine awards, this site is supposed to be fun. No one's expecting the Nobel Peace Prize and rep points aren't given for bravery. We tried to do away with them on New but there were complaints so they were restored and we started again from nil. Beefy likes his reps. Why shouldn't he? It's only a bit of fun.
