swear filters

I'm sorry about the rigid filters that have been imposed. The owners have been concerned about the low rating the site has been getting. I do understand that but think they have gone too far. SCO and I both feel that it would be better just to tell you all their concerns and ask you to tone any language down. I did agree to a filter on f and c words and also the nudity but not all this. So for that I am sorry. I still want this site to work for the same reasons as we moved here. Bonner still hasn't fixed any of those things as far as I am aware. It's not viable to move back there. I wouldn't want to lose the new members we have gained and they can't join that site.

What are your thoughts on this? Should swearing be allowed, moderated or banned entirely?

Think over filtering the site will lead to
1. Some creative spelling per ja606. Are they going to filter that too and do they really have the time for this?
2. Abandoning the site, which will really do wonders for their Google rating. They've barely started and they are whining about their rating already?

Per my other response, what is their target audience? Under 18's, not many of who shop at Wickes who are splashed across the top of my page right now, or adults (including some who might behave like U18's occasionally)?

One of the reasons I have never really bothered with DATM is the foul and abusive contributors on there. Don't want this forum to degenerate to that level, and if a filter is necessary, then so be it. We don't have a problem on our forum, for sure, but if others are going too far over the line, then, a soapy mouth wash usually does the trick. Did with me when I was a kid anyhow. Think the filter level is set too low though. Sometimes you just need a good old s h i t to get the point across. If you get my drift.  Thumb up

None of who ever utter a single profanity. If I wanted to chat to kids about football I'd join a local club, or a forum that likely would get me arrested. On other forums that they frequent they are often just downright abusive to anyone that offers an opinion that differs from theirs, which means folk stop posting, as I did on others that I joined in the past.

I don't have a problem with filtering "artistic" sexist piccy's, they belong on the often virus infested websites offering Russian brides and the like. Just use some common sense on the language front. That or filter out us old farts so the youngsters can swear at each other in peace. Thumb up

PS - what's the point of having a Report Button if you are going to filter everything at source and didn't the guys that run the site and kind of dragged us over here know what they were getting?

Bad language isn't really such a problem on the Town page, but I would be against any kind of swear filter, I dislike censorship to be fair and I don't buy into the theory that it shows low intellect either, in fact, nothing could be further from the truth. I like a good swear as much as the next man, although I don't tend to swear on here but would like to be given the opportuniy should I feel I want to slip in a few. I do tend to use 'industrial language' on DATM more as it's a more 'earthy' crowd of posters and I feel it's more acceptable on there.

To be honest, the swearing doesn't much bother me, though I'm unlikely to do it. 'Graphic' imagery is a different thing given I access this site at work - don't need naked people appearing on my screen.

Swearing shows emotion and everyone does it. You go to a football match and you hear people swearing in the crowd around kids. Kids pick up swearing at school. Its on TV programmes, in movies, its even in music. You can't run away from the fact it happens. Certain swear words can be offensive to Women and they shouldn't be used in the presence of a lady. I would say swearing has become a common place in our language and certain people do overuse it in situations and conversations when it doesn't need to be. I find it hysterical when old people and posh people swear.
