Gamboa

I am looking forward to see if Gamboa is as good as I think he is, assuming he will start against Liverpool. He certainly has the potential to excite and should be fully fit by now and have more of a familiarity with the rest of the squad.

Here here! Big Grin
I'm sure he CAN'T be as good as I think he is though - but if he's only half of that then that'll be fantastic!

Tactically, I suppose he'd be classed as more of a wing back than a full back - would this mean we'd play with 3 across the back and Gamboa would be in front of them? Would this then mean that we'd be changing formation - cos I can't see AI doing that ATM?? Huh

.....on 2nd thoughts though, wouldn't it be good to change line ups and confuse the enemy a tad??

If Gamboa comes into the side, it will be as a normal right back which is what his main position is. He has always been a right back in club football. It is only for Costa Rica where he is used as a wing back and even with them, they haven't always been a team playing with 3 centre halves and 2 wing backs. Their current coach interchanges between the back 3 with wing backs and a normal back 4. The coach before him did the same as well.

I think if he is brought into the side, he will definitely cause Liverpool problems especially if they play a narrow diamond. It could end up being a very interesting battle for attacking supremacy between Gamboa and Alberto Moreno.

....yay - I was fishing for a Josh tactical post!! Big Grin
I really hope that Gamboa gets a start sooner rather than later - IMO he's got more about his game than Wisdom, although TBF I've not seen him (Norman) enough to really say that! I just think that Gamboa has that spark, that energy, that desire to take the initiative, to set the team and the crowd alight, and you hardly ever get that sense of excitement from a defender!! Thumb up

Well played drewks. You know I can't resist a tactical discussion.  Tongue

Anyway, the best option is Gamboa especially if Liverpool have Sterling and Moreno on their left wing (that's if they play a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1) but it actually wouldn't surprise me if Mr Irvine plays Baird at right back for 'safety reasons' given that we are the away side.

With Dorrans tucking in I'd imagine Gamboa would be the better option anyway with his ability to get forward.  With Moreno going forwards as Josh says there should be opportunities for us on the break.

He may play Baird, but is he fit enough after being out and not training for the last two weeks due to illness?

To be honest, I've been pretty impressed with Wisdom so far, he
seldom gives the ball away and really gets forward for someone who
is supposed to be a natural centre half. The guy always keeps the ball
even in really tough situations and has a brilliant weight of pass.

Also, he's obviously decent in the air at set pieces, which is always
important for full backs these days.

His final ball could be better, but otherwise, he's been really good.

Gamboa looked good in the cup game, but didn't get forward as much as
Wisdom does (I don't remember him getting to the byline at all). Against
Burnley, when he came on and did get to the byline, he did put a
great ball in. So hoping to see more of that.

I'd expect he must start against Pool (starting Baird would scream negativity)
and it'll be interesting in a tough game. The good news is, when you've
got 2 good players fighting for one position, he must play really well to
keep his spot, given how Wisdom has looked so far.

Totally agree Slick. Don't know why so many slate wisdom so much.
