Nathan Oduwa

So we finally get the Alloa monkey off our back and in the process show that Warbuton's side can win convincingly at a) a tricky away ground and b) on an artificial surface.

But predictably the media has been tripping over itself to try to fire in a negative angle - this time new loan player Nathan Oduwa is the target for 'showboating'.

Based on his half hour I think he could be a brilliant acquisition for the season. It could be that he was just up against full backs already exhausted by our play down the flanks, but Oduwa looked like he had bags of pace and the ability to get by a couple of men to hit the byline. He could have enough about him to slaughter Premiership defences so in a way it's maybe a bit of a shame we'll only have him this season.

Of course Scotland doesn't like a flair player, so he's been criticised here for flicking the ball over the head of an Alloa player with a trick that's already had positive coverage worldwide and has spawned an Internet meme. It was a lovely bit of skill that almost came off. I thought he should have had a penalty out of it in the end but apparently the ref didn't approve either. Funny that he didn't blow for any foul until Oduwa had been wiped out and it was either give us a penalty or act like he'd been playing advantage even though there had never been an advantage to be gained by the Alloa player.

So do we approve of this sort of thing or do we have to criticise flair football?

For me he did nothing wrong. He was trying to get past a man in a perfectly legitimate way, demonstrated some nice skill and entertained the fans (haven't we as Scottish fans complained about our game being rubbish to watch for decades?). I'll admit there are times when players pull out a trick purely to embarrass an opponent with no advantage to gain from it, and I generally have a tutting disapproval of that (unless the opponent deserves it because he's a hacking bastard for example), but in this case it's all just a case of sour grapes from the Alloa player. I'd be happy to see more of that from Oduwa.

I've not seen it but fir me if you got it flaunt it,as an opposing player deal wi it end if story,JJ Okocha done stuff like that every week he was a hero for it at Bolton, were starved of talent up here and I say embrace it when you have the chance,I see the Alloa defender says he was taking the piss tough and Warburton says he'll have a word with him if it were me us be saying more if the same please.

Fans love that kind of thing, opposing players/fans don't. It's that simple. Ricksen would not have enjoyed bobby petta ripping him to shreds and the press were full of the same kind of"showboating" talk after.

This was just a young player producing some flicks and tricks on his first game, total non-story.

Agree 100% what everybody's said so far

Having said that,if he does it against us he'll be back tae a disrespectful showboating badtard

It's a pretty pathetic response from the Alloa player (helped of course by our wonderfully balanced media).

He should really be concentrating on the simple fact that the boy tried to go past him but his own good defending snuffed out the attack, instead of whining like a wee lassie.

The subtle sub-text now reads as 'try that again sonny, and you'll get a doing'.

The Scottish football media is a morally repulsive midden.

I saw the game on BT Sport and much as I was amused by Oduwa's flick-trick, he did end up on the wrong side of the Alloa player after it and in trying to regain possession pulled the defender down, hence the free-kick to Alloa.
Speaking generally, although Oduwa has drive and gets to the byline, he does have a head down and charge approach to the game, leading to a lack of awareness of where his team-mates are and consequently missing chances to spread the play by passing to a better placed team-mate.
If I have spotted this I have no doubt the Manager has too, so I expect to see a more integrated (into the team) approach from Oduwa in future.

Made two goals - one chopped off. For me that shows decent awareness of where his team mates are.

Be nice to see what he is fully capable of, with a few more games under his belt. Fingers crossed he needs another season with us to break into the Spurs first team. For me the daily record article was very disappointing, they have been having a nibble at us for the lat few days now with pretty much non storys. Craig and Keith must be fuming that there is only football to talk about now!

I don't think he fouled Hamilton at all. He had an arm round him but he didn't get hold of him and just wriggled around him in the end. Thought he was unlucky to be pulled up on it although I can see why he might have been.

Yes, its typical of the Scottish attitude alas. If Messi had done it it would have been ok as he is the greatest so no shame etc, but when a new oung guy shows some tricks and initiative its showboating cheeky git...F -aff back from where you came from attitude comes out.... youve gotta laugh at our journo's and at the attitudes that showing skill is akin to ripping the pish.
