Seriously though, I think everyone in the game spouts on too much, and talks too much, about formations.
IMO, the basics are still true - when in possession, find space; when defending, deny space. Good players will have that drilled into them and be able to apply it WHATEVER the tactical lineup; again, IMO Arsenal do this better than any other team.
The ability to adapt to what the other team is doing is more important than the way you line up on the team sheet, and obviously the better the players the harder they are to play against, whatever the formation you choose!   Big Grin

This Old Fart is in total agreement, drewks.  The simple basics and.........when in doubt, kick it out!

Anoyher Old Fart agrees. DD  Rolleyes Rolleyes

Welcome back DD Thumb up

I'm not surprised you buggered off for a bit with all these (me included) old farts around.

A new definition of flatulence -----  Someone with a wind problem being run over by a steam roller. Laugh
Some days I'm top dog, most days I'm just the lamp post.

4-4-2 Still works (Real Madrid for instance) and actually I think someone like Pulis can make it work superbly, we have however gone off it in this country they do use it effectively all over Europe
The main thing is your midfield have to be workhorses so no wingers who cant track back, it worked well for Man United as the likes of Keane/Butt/Ince/Robson ran miles in the middle as did Giggs/Beckham whoever on the wings, It wont work if you have say Charles N`Zogbia

Yes, Although German teams now play 4-4-2 rather than the usual 1-2-5-2 Sweeper system (with wing backs) lots of clubs in Eastern Europe (Russia, Czech Republic) still play that way and often succesfully

One of the first teams to play three at the back was Suprisingly Southampton, although we often see 3-5-2(Wingers) or 5-3-2(Wing backs) I`d love some club to play 3-4-1-2 ala classic Juventus of the Del Piero years

Most interesting formations ive seen were Argentina circa 98 who used 4-2-2-2 and Robson`s Barcelona 2-3-3-2

Do any of the "Old Farts" on here still live in the Black Country? I do.  If this is not an ageist suggestion - oh, these awful days of political correctness - I wonder if any of you might be interested in meeting for a drink and a reminisce sometime?

Nice offer, Bomber, but I now live 270 miles away from the the Shrine.
If you get a charabanc together (to St.Ives) I'll get the 1st round in, but I have to be in bed by 9.
Start every day off with a smile and get it over with
