Billy Connolly said there were only two seasons in Scotland, June and Winter, remaining true to that dictum the Scottish League Cup group stages start tonight, for those tiring of all the plastic football around, and gasping for a real game of gashed shins, grazed thighs, embarrassing errors in defence and apoplectic middle-aged managers.
