Newport County have signed former Swansea City defender Joe Thomas on a two-year deal.

The 22-year old left the Swans this summer and becomes Newport’s third signing in 24 hours after deals for left back Anthony Glennon and centre back Ciaran Brennan.

“I’m delighted to be joining the club and I’m looking forward to getting started,” Thomas said.

“Talks have been going on for a few weeks now and I’m excited for what’s to come.”

The Exiles are currently without a manager after Graham Coughlan’s departure last week, with owner Huw Jenkins currently leading Newport’s recruitment drive.

Newport County have continued the summer overhaul of their squad with the signing of Kai Whitmore from Haverfordwest County.

Midfielder Whitmore is the fourth recruit of the week for the currently managerless League Two club.

The 23-year-old joined Haverforwest from fellow Cymru Premier side Penybont in May 2023, scoring four goals.

His 32 apperances for the west Wales club - managed by former County goalkeeper Tony Pennock - included Uefa Europa Conference League qualifiers against FC Shkendija and B36 Torshavn.

“I’m really excited to get started," said Whitmore.

“I enjoyed the challenge in the Cymru Premier and I think the experience of playing in Europe, in big stadiums, will help me make the step up.”

Newport, who parted company with manager Graham Coughlan earlier this month, have already signed former Swansea defender Joe Thomas, ex-Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Ciaran Brennan, and left-back Anthony Glennon.

Newport County have signed former Sheffield United U21s striker Oliver Greaves on a two-year contract.

The deal for the 24-year-old is subject to Football League approval and international clearance.

Greaves left the Blades at the age of 20 following injury.

After dropping out of professional football following a loan spell at Barrow, the attacking midfielder restarted his career with spells at Dover Athletic, Buxton in the National League and Spanish club CD Almunecar City.

Last season Greaves scored 24 goals in 48 appearances for Mickleover in the Southern League Northern Premier Division.

Greaves told the Exiles website: "There was quite a bit of interest from a number of professional clubs last season.

"But as soon as I heard about the Newport interest, I could not wait to get it over the line, I am buzzing.

"I've heard nothing but good things about the fans and the club and I just can't wait to play in front of them."

Greaves is the Exiles' fifth signing as chairman Huw Jenkins continues his search for a new head coach having parted company with manager Graham Coughlan earlier this month.

This week defenders Ciaran Brennan, Anthony Glennon and Joe Thomas, plus midfielder Kai Whitmore arrived on two year contracts.

Newport County have signed former Manchester United and Sunderland goalkeeper Jacob Carney.

The 23-year-old has agreed a two-year deal with the move subject to international clearance and Football League approval.

“I’m really happy to be here," Carney told the Newport website.

“I’ve been speaking to the club for quite a while and now that it’s all done, I’m looking forward to getting into pre-season and meeting the lads.

“The philosophy of the chairman (Huw Jenkins) is how I want to play. It ticked every box for me.”

Carney is a product of the Manchester United academy and signed his first professional contract at Old Trafford in May 2020, before spending the second half of the following campaign on loan at Portadown, in Northern Ireland.

Wales under-21 skipper Matt Baker has joined Newport County in a permanent deal from Championship club Stoke City.

Baker, 21, has signed a two-year contract after the clubs agreed a "compensation agreement".

The versatile defender or midfielder was given his first call-up to Wales' senior squad for the summer friendlies against Gibraltar and Slovakia.

He is a familiar face to Newport fans having had loan spells with the League Two club in January 2023 and again last season when he made 39 appearances.

Baker told the club website: "I am really happy to be back here at the club, this time on a permanent basis.

"To be back here playing in front of these fans is amazing and I cannot wait to get started.

"Being here on a permanent basis now gives me a chance to build on last season."

Baker becomes Newport's seventh signing of the summer, even though the club have not yet found a replacement for manager Graham Coughlan, who left recently for the club to move in a "different direction".

He follows the arrival of Jacob Carney, Oliver Greaves, Kai Whitmore, Joe Thomas, Ciaran Brennan and Anthony Glennon. All the recruits are 24 or under.

Baker started his carer at Gillingham before completing a move to Stoke in 2021, where he captained the Potters' Under-21s.

He qualifies for Wales through his Narberth grandmother and captained his country in the European under-17s championships. He has also skippered the Wales Under-19s and has become a mainstay with Matty Jones' Wales Under-21 side.

Newport County's summer recruitment spree has continued with the signing of former Sunderland winger Michael Spellman.

Spellman, 23, has joined subject to international clearance on a deal which will go through to the summer of 2026.

The Sunderland under-23s player is a product of the Park View Academy in the north east, having been on the books of Newcastle United as a schoolboy.

He joined neighbours Sunderland in June 2022 and has subsequently had loans at Whitby Town and Blyth Spartans.

Spellman told the club website: "I am delighted to get the deal over the line.

"I can't wait to get started. The club is on the rise and it wants to play good football which is what I am all about."

Spellman is Newport's eighth signing of the summer window, following the arrival of Matt Baker, Jacob Carney, Oliver Greaves, Kai Whitmore, Joe Thomas, Ciaran Brennan and Anthony Glennon.

The club is also searching for a new head coach to succeed Graham Coughlan, who left last month for the League Two club to move in a "different direction".

Newport County have given teenage defender Nelson Sanca his first professional contract.

The 17-year-old joined the Exiles' academy in the summer of 2023 after impressing in the Ardal Leagues with Cardiff club Canton.

Sanca made his senior debut against Tranmere Rovers in April.

“I think it’s been a really good season for me and I can’t thank everyone enough for their support," said Sanca.

“Last season I came from grassroots, and I couldn’t have imagined to have been in this position almost a year later."

He added: “The academy has been brilliant to be a part of since I joined. They’ve played a huge part in my development and have always been there for me.

“Next season for me is just about kicking on once again. Work hard with the first team and try and play as many games as possible."

Newport County have re-signed striker Courtney Baker-Richardson on a two-year deal.

Baker-Richardson, 28, returns to Rodney Parade having scored eight goals in 31 Exiles appearances during the 2021-22 campaign.

The former Swansea City player scored 10 goals in 44 appearances for Newport’s League Two rivals Crewe Alexandra last season.

He was offered a new deal at Crewe with his contract up this summer, but has instead opted to become managerless Newport’s ninth close-season signing.

“I’ve obviously been at Newport before so I’m well aware of what is expected down here,” Baker-Richardson told Newport’s website.

“I know the ambition of the club from when I was here. It’s a homely environment for me and I know what I must do to win the fans over."

Baker-Richardson scored 19 goals across two seasons at Crewe, who he joined after leaving Newport.

He has also played for the likes of Barnet, Barrow and Accrington Stanley.

Baker-Richardson follows Michael Spellman, Matt Baker, Jacob Carney, Oliver Greaves, Kai Whitmore, Joe Thomas, Ciaran Brennan and Anthony Glennon in joining Newport this summer.

The signings have been made despite the fact that Newport are yet to appoint a successor to Graham Coughlan, who left his role as manager on 20 June.

Newport County have signed former Leeds United and Burton Albion winger Bobby Kamwa.

He earned a two-year professional contract at Elland Road before a loan spell at Dunfermline in the Scottish Premiership.

In October 2022, Kamwa joined Burton Albion, where he made 46 appearances, netting four goals.

He played 26 times for the League One club in 2023-24 but was released in May.

"I am very pleased to be here," Kamwa told the Newport website.

"It is a club who have shown a lot of interest in me and the way they have welcomed me has been amazing.

"I have spoken to the manager and he told me about plans going forward. That was something that really excited me."

Newport travel to Hereford on Saturday for their final pre-season game before their League Two opener at Cheltenham on Saturday, 10 August.

Newport County have signed former Queens Park Rangers striker Hamzad Kargbo after a successful trial.

The 6'4" centre forward is the Exiles' 13th summer recruit.

The 22-year-old has been on trial with Newport for much of the close season having featured in friendlies against Pontypridd United, Kidderminster Harriers, Bristol Rovers and Hereford.

"I'm very excited, as soon as I first came here I could feel it in my heart that it was a place I wanted to be and here I am," Kagbo told the club website.

“Obviously it’s never easy coming in as a trialist, but I could see from my first training session that everyone is like a family here which made it easier for me because I was welcomed straight away.

“It has given me the chance to focus on working hard throughout pre-season to show Nelson (Jardim, Newport head coach) what I can bring to the squad.”

Kargbo was on the books of QPR from the age of 12, joining from the Mass Elite Academy. He has been a regular in the Rangers' under-23s during the last two seasons.

He has also had loan spells at Vanarama National League sides Southend United and Oxford City.

Earlier this week Newport sold last season's top scorer Will Evans to League One side Mansfield Town.

Cardiff manager Erol Bulut has been keen to send some of the Championship side's youngsters out on loan to gain necessary experience.

Last week he earmarked Evans, defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott and Raheem Conte for loan spells.

On Thursday, midfielder Eli King joined League One Stevenage Borough on a season-long loan.

Brithdir product Evans, who signed a new Cardiff deal in the summer, played on loan at National League outfit Gateshead last season, having previously had a spell at Torquay United. He has five league appearances to his name for the Bluebirds.

Evans made a second-half substitute’s appearance in Cardiff’s 2-0 Carabao Cup first-round win over Bristol Rovers.

But Bulut believes the loan system provides the Championship club with an invaluable way of developing their youngsters.

Bulut said: “They need to play. Without playing you cannot make steps forward. For them it’s important they have games, especially for Evans.

“Against Bristol Rovers he did well when he came in but this he has to show continuously in his performance on loan, (show) that he can go on.”
