Preston & Sheff Wed vs WBA - Match Thread

4 goals and a clean sheet on the road. I didn't think we had it in us, but we looked a lot more solid.

What was particularly pleasing was to see us keep attacking after the 2nd goal. At 1-0, we seemed to sit back and were under the cosh at times. But after we scored the 2nd, we looked in control.

From a personnel point of view, the decision to drop BTA seemed was a masterstroke given we played on the counter attack and had more quality without him. Not sure if that was Corberan's intention or if he just dropped him because he's been poor recently, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Whether playing without a striker will work in a home game, where sides sit back against us, remains to be seen. But we certainly broke with a lot more purpose than we have in previous away games, on Saturday.

Finally we got to see Yokuslu and Mowatt together. I realise Mulumby is a fan favourite because of his work rate, but the former duo has to be our best footballing partnership surely. Hopefully Corberan sticks with them for the Sheffield Wednesday game.

Also thought the back 3 with Bartley looked a lot more solid. Maybe it was down to Preston having a bad game, but I also thought Kipre looked better next to Bartley. Now I'm far from Bartley's biggest fan, but as I've said several times, he'd be the first name out of our current crop due to his power in the air in both boxes. So it was good to see him chip with a goal as well.

Different challenges in the coming home games, but it looks an easier run "on paper", so it would be nice to see us push into the playoff places.

I would play the same 11 tonight apart from any injuries.

Well, after the demolition of previously unbeaten PNE, away, we all know what's coming in the very next game against bottom of the table SW, at home, don't we?

We played some good stuff at times tonight, particularly first half.

I'm not sure how much of that was down to us improving or Sheffield Wednesday being a poor side. But I thought the midfield at least, with Yokuslu, Mowatt and Swift, we looked good.

The only downside is that we look really toothless up top, which led to nail biting at the end. With a bit more quality in the final third, we should've been out of sight.

We just lacked that bit of guile to put the game to bed. A lot of our attacking came through the wing backs, who all too often just slung a cross in which the Wednesday defence were happy to gobble up against our invisible aerial threat up top. It was the sort of game where the craft of Sarmiento would've been useful to get a 2nd goal, but I'm not sure where he was...

I've never felt BTA was equipped to play on his own up top, but at least last season he could take a pass in and was neat with the ball. This season, his first touch isn't there and his passing really is erratic. I realise we haven't got any other options, but I'd be inclined to try someone out of position rather than giving him the full 90 on that form. Let's hope Maja gets back ASAP.

Yes BTA is not getting any better and sadly for all his enthusiasm he is not really a threat to the opposition.

We need to get Maja back urgently. I wonder if there is a free agent striker out there, not an old mercenary, but one looking for a few more years. Surely it’s worth a shot?

How far is Cleary away from match fitness, he must get a chance when he's available.
At least he knows where the net is.
BTA is a headless chicken, but he was from the bottom on the barrel. Tried hard but is not improving. Not going to make it at this level.

Yes we could do with another striker, with Dike and Maja injured. Also notice Sarmiento is now out. Plus in the academy Cleary is injured. I like BTA for all his energy, but he is really a back up striker to Dike when he is fit (if ever he is fit).

On a positive note, Palmer is playing really well and I am impressed how he has improved. (Hope that is not the cue for a big mistake)

Plus Swift has really found his mojo this year and looks inches taller with his confidence.

Finally, let’s not get carried away, with us being in a play off place. I thought we would end up mid table with the finance problems, but some thought we may even end up in a relegation battle.

We will see but I for one still likes what CC brings to the Albion. I would like to see what he could do with a bit of funding from new owners with pockets (hopefully soon)
