Didn't realise Ian Ross had managed the Terriers.

Growing up watching the Villa he was one of my favourite players and then as a coincidence finished his playing career with Hereford United. He joined as a "player" manager and did indeed play a dozen or so times for the Bulls during his last season.

I liked Ross as a boss. He brought back Mick Buxton as his assistant and got us to the Play Offs. But then Mick got the Sunderland job, things stuttered along until he was replaced by Warnock.
Ross had us playing some good, attractive football, but Warnock got us up.

That Grimsby game was a proper 0-0 game. It was like an end of season, nothing to play for, can't be bothered type of game.

The thing is though, we were still in the top 6 but it was quite clear that the players had given up.

I remember somebody tried getting a Steve Bruce's Barmy Army chant going and got shouted down by people around him, saying how much they detested Bruce.

Fortunately I was on t'other side o't pond when that 'appened.

Lost me car for about half an hour after a Grimesby game one year as all the streets in Cleethorpes behind the away end looked exactly the same.

April 2:

On this date in 1928, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United met for the 2nd replay of their FA Cup semi final. After draws at Old Trafford and Goodison Park, the two played this one on a Monday afternoon at Maine Road, the home of Manchester City. Town had played at Bury at the weekend without five of their star players who were all playing in the annual England v Scotland match at Wembley. They all came back into the line up which had a few changes from the starting XI of the first replay a week ago. Ned Barkas came in at left back for Sam Wadsworth, Levi Redfern returned at right half in place of Bon Spence and David Steele played at left half instead of Tommy Meads. Leading scorer George Brown, was still missing, so Johnny Dent kept his place at centre forward, as he had done at Gigg Lane on Saturday when he scored the winner.

But it was the Scottish winger, the Wembley Wizard, Alex Jackson who won it for Town. Fresh from scoring a hat trick against England at Wembley, he scored again to win the game 1-0 for the terrific Town. A crowd of 69,370 went to Moss Side to see this one. The Final will be against Blackburn Rovers on the 21st of April and will be Town's first visit to the new national stadium, still known then as the Empire Stadium.

We had a remarkable win at Leeds Road on this date in 1988. We had lost at Man City earlier on in the season, a disastrous season that saw us relegated long before the end of the season. That defeat at Maine Road was, and still is the club record defeat, but on this day, we beat them 1-0. Carl Madrick scored it, his only Town goal in a short career that saw him play 8 times for us and 8 times for Peterborough.

In 2011, we had game 19 of the unbeaten run of regular league games, when we beat Tranmere Rovers 2-0 at the Galpharm. Benik Afobe and Lee Novak scoring the goals in this one.

But what about this one though? On this date in 1993, we won at Craven Cottage. The last time that we won away at Fulham, before we won down there this season. Iwan Roberts scored the goal in a 1-0 win.

Finally today, another death to report. It's one I've mentioned before though. Frank Chivers died on this date in 1942, aged just 32.

He was a striker who was born in Gloucestershire, but must have moved north, because he started out at Barnsley and had experience of working darn t'pit before he became a professional footballer. Well, so did loads of Town players from the old days, but this would become significant later.

He signed for Town in 1936 and scored his first goal in a 4-1 home win over Middlesbrough. He scored the winning goal in the 6th round FA Cup replay against York City in 1938, but that was his last goal for the club and he didn't make the team for the final. He was then transferred to Blackburn after scoring 17 goals in 54 games for the Town.

He was on their books right up to the day he died. He was killed in service of his country during the war, but not as a soldier or owt like that. No, he was killed in a mining accident at Barnburgh Main Colliery. Because of his previous experience of mining and it being an essential job, he was drafted in to do mining work, whether he wanted to or not. And so his name appears on the club's Roll of Honour of Town players who were killed during war service.

Apparently they were selling 'em "darn the market" on the Kings Road, (or was it Portabello Road?) back in the day.

Not sure if they were official one's down there or not. Town won't let ASDA sell their stuff let alone some mush from Shepherds Bush. Hookey Street is magnifique.

I've one of each, somewhere in the back or the wardrobe.

They make an occasional appearance so they don't fade too much and well, just to keep the moths off 'em.

They usually get a positive comment from fellow Town fans.

The trouble with them was the sponsor lettering falling off in the wash.
Even the players would sometimes play with OLA or GOL on the front.
