That was Joe Lolley's last game I think. Scored a spectacular one then got mugged on the edge of his own area when given a ridiculous pass from the keeper.

January 14th:

Sadly, in 2019, following a 0-0 draw at Cardiff left us bottom of the Premier League and 8 points from safety, David Wagner left the club. Sad

Well, as they say in Strictly when somebody has been knocked out. Grab the tissues and let's have a look at your highlights.......

We have two birthdays. One of them is Player of the Season for 2013/14, Adam Clayton. Born this day in 1989, making this his 33rd birthday. The question is though, where will he be spending his birthday? He hasn't played since January last year and was released by Birmingham in November.

Where be ye, Bluebeard?

And the other one is slightly younger. Rarmani River Miguel Joseph Edmonds-Green, to give him his full name (according to Wikipedia) is 23 today, born in 1999. He's on loan at Rotherham at the moment, who are top of League One. This could be his second league title if they stay on top. He previously won the League Two title with Swindon when on loan there in 19/20.

He did of course, play a load of games for Town last season, but has been left out this season to get more experience, while Levi Colwill comes in to get experience in his place. Rolleyes

January 15th:

Only got stuff already covered in the January the 15th down the ages on the match thread, but let's crack on anyway.....

The last match played on this date was in 2011 away at Walsall, in the Bescot Stadium. That's another ground I have never been to. Went to Fellows Park a few times.

Anyway, this was a 4-2 win, with Kevin Kilbane, Jamie McCombe, Peter Clarke and Jordan Rhodes scoring the goals. Did you go? What's the Bescot like?

I did go to the game in 1983 down at Exeter. Nearly didn't get there though. That was in the days when me and my mates went on the notorious Millbridge Bus. We always used to set off early doors and find a small town near to the destination and have a right good booze up! Can't recall where we went this time or even if we got there, because we were held up on route.

Some traffic cop with a grudge, stopped the bus, pulled us over onto the hard shoulder and accused one of us of throwing a beer can onto the M5. None of us had. The bloke was complete arsehole who, like most coppers back then, thought he could take liberties with football fans. He kept us on that hard shoulder for what must have been at least an hour. Nobody owned up to it, because there was nothing to own up to. How on earth do you throw a beer can from a coach anyway. Them bloody windows don't open. Prick!

Anyway, we did get there in time for a few bevvies after all. Nice little pub behind the away end. And what a cracker of a match it was. Can't remember how the scoring went but we won it 4-3 and our scorers were Mark Lillis, Phil Wilson, Brian Stanton and David Cowling.

Way back in 1930, we beat Bury at Leeds Road in a 3rd round FA Cup replay, with a hat trick from Scotland international and Wembley Wizard, Alex Jackson. That was the start of a run all the way to the Final. A famous Final against Herbert Chapman and his Arsenal team. Did we win it? Find out on the 26th of April.  Tongue

Expect you were in the St Annes Well at Exeter. Only a short walk to the away end at St James Park........if you can call it that!! Lived there a number of years but never liked the ground. Thumb down

Bescot Stadium I've always liked. Thumb up

A famous win in 1971 against the mighty Arsenal. They would go on to win the league that season. We would finish in a creditable 15th in our first season back in the top flight for 14 years. Les Chapman and a Frank Worthington penalty for us. Ray Kennedy for the Gunners. Have a watch of it here. Of course it's a penalty! Whistle

And it's a happy 30th birthday to Álex Vallejo. Born in 1992, in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital city of the Basque Country and of the province of Álava in northern Spain.

For a 30 year old, he doesn't have a great number of matches played on his CV. Less than two hundred appearances. Most of his club games were for Mallorca B and his only goal for Town, against Blackburn Rovers, was only the 4th of his career. Makes Hoggy look prolific! Rolleyes

January 17th:

On this day in 1968, after beating Wolves, Norwich, West Ham and Fulham, Tom Johnston led his Huddersfield Town side down to Highbury to play Arsenal in the first leg of our first and only League Cup semi final.

George Graham, ex Town full back Bob McNab and John Radford scored for the Gunners, but it wasn't all over yet as Trevor Cherry and Colin Dobson scored for the Town (don't know what order the goals came in) and the match ended 3-2 to the Arse.

So all to play for in the 2nd leg. On the same night, the other semi final first leg was played at the Baseball Ground, where Leeds Urinals beat Derby County 1-0. Could we possibly turn this tie around for a West Yorkshire derby at Wembley?

Find out on February the 6th. Wink

We have a Town legend's birthday today. Stood at 16th in our all time goalscoring records list, with 63 goals from 234 (+ 8 subs), it's Mark Lillis. Born in Manchester in 1960, he's 62 today.

I remember his debut. It was my first time going to an away game on my own, without my dad. I went on the official Supporters Club coach and it was Newport County in the old 4th Division in 1978/79. He was a midfielder then, taking the number 4 jersey following an injury to Ian Holmes. He played 11 games that season, but oddly none in the 79/80 promotion season.

He was later converted to a central defender by Mick Buxton, but following a striker crisis, brought on by the retirements of Steve Kindon, Peter Fletcher and Ian Robins, Mark was thrown in up front and never looked back. He was absolutely brilliant!

He scored 20 goals in 82/83 as he and Colin Russell (16 goals) fired us up to automatic promotion.

In 95 / 96 season, on January 17th, Hereford United headed to White Hart Lane to face Spurs in an FA Cup Third round replay after a credible 1 . 1 draw at Edgar Street.

No fairy tale this time as Spurs ran out 5 . 1 winners on the day with Teddy Sheringham scoring a hatrick. Gareth Stoker got the consolation for the Bulls.

( Huddersfield eventually went out to Wimbledon in the 5th round again after a replay)

Not much to report today. The most significant thing I can find about today is another win against Leeds. Rolleyes

This win was at Bellend Road in 1930 and completed the double for the season against the club who a decade earlier, had tried to take over ours. This was a 1-0 win, as was the win at Leeds Road. The scorer was the same for both matches, inside forward Harry Davies.

He had joined us from Stoke, having played seven seasons there. He had two seasons with us, playing in the 1930 FA Cup Final, before returning to Stoke in 1932. He scored over a hundred times for them over his two spells there, before joining Port Vale. For us, he scored 17 from 57 games.

The most recent match on this day was a 0-0 draw at home to Brentford in 2020. You have to go back a lot further for our last win on this date. That was in 1969 when we beat Bristol City at home 4-1 with goals from Jimmy Nicholson, Paul Aimson and two from Colin Dobson.
