The little fella, Hendry I think, scored and drunk champoo out of his muddy boot afterwards.

That made it a Manc double after their Watney's Cup exploits many years before against the Red Mancs.

Don't think they were in a rush to drink too much Watney's Red Barrel after that one though.

My bro is still drinking and dining out on both. Laugh (we used to have a beer emoji - anyone paying attention in Mod/Development land now we've got all these adverts to pay for the site? Just asking for an emoji stunted friend).
A guide to cask ale.

January 6th:

A sad one to start with today. On this day in 1934, legendary Huddersfield Town and Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman died of pneumonia, aged 55.

He had been up north, watching Bury v Notts County and then watched Sheffield Wednesday the next day, but returned home with a bit of a cold. That bit of a cold turned nasty after he had watched Arsenal's reserves and pneumonia set in. His illness was short as he died the next day at his home in Hendon.

More of the great man as the year goes on, he does loom rather large over Huddersfield Town's history. So to a more recent one. Ten years actually, on this date in 2012, Jordan Rhodes scored five goals in a match against Wycombe Wanderers. Five goals for Jordan, but don't forget who started the rout........super Oscar Gobern! Here, have a watch of this......

January 7th: A busy one today!

Back in 1922, we played Burnley in the FA Cup. One hundred years and a day later, we will play them again. This match was drawn 2-2, but we won the replay and it was the start of our successful campaign that ended with us winning the Cup for the one and only time. Ernie Islip and Billy Watson scored the goals in this one, with two goals from Clem Stephenson and one from Frank Mann winning the replay 3-2 at Leeds Road on the following Wednesday. Town then played Brighton, Blackburn, Millwall and Notts County before beating Preston in the Final.

On the opposite scale of the FA Cup, we had our record defeat on this day in 1950. It was at Roker Park and we got beaten by big spending Sunderland, who had recently forked out a record transfer to Newcastle for the "Clown Prince of Soccer", Len Shackleton. I can't find any record of the scorers, but they were all Sunderland goals as they beat us 6-0. Blush

We also have three birthdays. Born on the actual same day as that Cup match I've just mentioned, was one of the worst managers we ever had, Malcolm Macdonald. Born in Fulham in 1950, he went on to play for his home town club, if Fulham is a town. He also managed them later on, after a playing career that took in Luton, Newcastle and Arsenal as well as England.

Odd quirk of fate that the man who managed us when we had our record league defeat, was born on the day we had our record FA Cup defeat.

It later turned out that he was suffering from alcoholism whilst managing Town, but he's been dry since 1997. He is also now married to Carol, the ex wife of AC/DC front man, Brian Johnson and she helped him through his rehabilitation. He works in the media in the north east, well maybe not now, as he's 72 today, but he does keep popping up when there's a story about Newcastle going on.

Fifty years old today, born in 1952 is Kevin Gray. He of course, is best remembered for crocking a Bradford City player, but let's not go there. He played 252 games for us (+ 17 subs) and scored 6 times.

Talking of crocks. Permanently inured Izzy Brown is 25 today, having been born in 1997. He's at his tenth club already. That's Preston, for whom he hasn't yet played, having gotten crocked before the season started. Rolleyes

The FA Cup game with QPR was when they were one of the top teams of the time. It was a bit of an underdog shock situation.

Believe it or not the guy who sits with us at Town games has a partnership with Mr La Frenais (and his mate Dick Clement)

Ho'way now, you learn something new everyday!

January 8th:

Today, we play Burnley in the FA Cup. Previously on this date we have played 8 FA Cup matches, winning 3, drawing 3 and losing 2. One of them, in 1938, was the first step on the journey to Wembley where we met and lost to Preston North End. But the 3rd round game on this date was a home tie at Leeds Road against Hull City. We won it 3-1, with Pat Beasley scoring one and Alf Lythgoe two.

In 1983, we played Chelsea at home and drew 1-1, with Brian Stanton scoring. We lost the replay though.

And the most recent was a 2-0 home win over Conference team Dover Athletic in 2011. We were averaging 15,000 for home matches, but the FA Cup had lost some of it's magic by now and only 7,894 turned up for this one. It started well, going two up inside 8 minutes, with Scott Arfield and Gary Roberts scoring. But not adding to the scoreline led to frustration amongst the crowd and it's odd getting booed off when you've won. Well not booed off, but there were grumblings at the final whistle. Anyway, this win led to a trip to Arsenal in the next round.
Did we win down there? You'll have to wait until January the 30th to find out. No spoilers! Whistle

Two birthdays to mention. Born in 1991, Sean Morrison is 31 today. He had two loan spells with us. Firstly in 2011, when he couldn't get a game because of the form of Peter Clarke and Jamie McCombe. Undeterred, he came back and tried again in the next season and became a Play Off winning hero, arriving in January and staying to the end of the season. He scored one of the penalties in the shoot out with Sheff Utd, but that was his last appearance in a Town shirt.

And young Kamil Grabara is 23 today. Born in 1999 in Ruda Śląska, Poland, he now plays in the Danish Superliga with Copenhagen, having left Liverpool last year.

Forgot Scott Arfield played for the terriers. Seen him a lot up here playing for sevco. Despite the team he plays for now I have always liked him as a footballer.

As for Hereford, today is the birthday of a no nonsense centreback and occasional striker, John Brough who played for us in the early 90's. In his youth  he was at Notts County under the management of Neil Warnock...........makes you realise how long Warnock has been in the managerial game.

Brough was there when Graham Turner managed the Bulls ( after his jobs at Villa and Wolves, he was with us for 14 years)
