Hertz v Hibs, Sun 12 Sept, KO 12 noon
#11
A familiar score line but the game was surprisingly good quality with both sides playing their part.

Hertz played better than I thought, their new players look good and Boyce worked his socks off up top. Both keepers had to make good saves to keep the score blank in the end. But i felt once Neilson made his changes they didn't cause us so many problems and last 15-20 minutes we could have snatched the points.

At the end of the day if we had used the ball a bit better 2nd half we might have got a more positive result, but a draw at the purple bus stop isnae a bad result for now.

Agreed Jim.

I have followed Ben Woodburn through the Welsh sides and he has always impressed me. He will be excellent for them.

Beni from Everton also looked impressive and their midfield is starting to look strong.

As you say we may have sneaked it but still not a bad result.

Totally agree that they are good signings, Hertz were a lot more comfortable on the ball than they were last time they were in the top flight and they played a lot of good stuff on the counter and caused us problems.

But that said we were without some key players but still (I reckon) looked a more talented attacking side.

The atmosphere is hugely overrated at tynecastle as well. I could only hear the away fans mostly, have the jambos got any songs ?

Don't "get me going" re Hertz awful chants/songs Jim!  Rolleyes   Definitely piss poor (esp compared with Hibs fans' overall song repertoire down the years), has been for years, and that combines well with that overrated atmosphere (the bigger issue is the size of their pitch and its close proximity to their fans!). One of their classic "cringe" numbers of all time is that dirge - .....it's DOOOOONNNNN AT TYNECASTLE THEY BIDE......!! Doh Slow, utterly depressing and they are welcome to sing that awful song ad infinitum!!  Re Hibs performance in this particular match, I think Hibs were a far better passing/fast moving team than them, but one noticeable feature that Neilson has added to his team is additional pace. I also think consistent striking could well pose a problem for them as the season progresses towards an eventual winter dimension.

The guy who sits next to me in the West has a son who is a jambo. He said he went with him a couple of weeks ago ( dons?) and was impressed with the atmosphere which he said was better than where we sit in the West. Confused  Huh  Must admit, at times, I can believe it Whistle

Ultimately it is all down to opinion TBF. I compare the overall chants/songs of Hibs fans down the years to what they have to offer and it is like "time stood still" at the PBH. For example, when did Hibs fans originally adopt "Sunshine on Leith" as their unofficial football anthem??? The early 1990s??? That epic 2016 Scottish Cup win v Rangers, one of the the most dramatic Scot Cup finals ever witnessed at Hampden, enlightened a lotta footie people, outwith Scotland, who were observing legions n legions of Hibs fans in the stands impressively "reeling off" one of the great footie anthems in Scotland for the first time and hugely impressed. There were quite a few other vibrant footie chants "piped up" on that historical day, incl the "Hibees Bounce", and it added to that special atmosphere. Hertz fans can't compete with that famous anthem and have nothing even close to that Proclaimers number. Maybe its all down to the type of Hibs fans who show up for big games (in huge numbers) at ER Stadium and elsewhere - they possibly add a different level of atmosphere than other Hibs fans who pick up the match tickets!! I must admit I can't join in on singing "Sunshine on Leith" - too emotive for personal reasons! I try hard to "clear my mind" and sing it, but it aint easy even though I know the lyrics! That's just the way it is - A GREAT SONG, A GREAT FOOTIE ANTHEM and I think it's well up there with the likes of "Walk on", but I'm biased of course.

Think you summed it up in the last line 0762........you are biased as we all are on this forum towards Hibs.

Unfair to slate Hearts fans for their singing of "their" song as through the years and tradition this is part of the infra structure of Heart of Midlothian. It doesn't matter if its slow, afterall you cannot get much slower than Sunshine on Leith! Also our anthem will struggle to be sung without the record playing so as to keep the fans in time.........but as Hibs fans we love it. I also personally like the scarf twirling, flag waving etc as it always looks good as a spectacle.

I'm sure S on L has the same effect on many Jambos as their song does on you. I'm sure there are also Hibs fans who sing it but actually don't like the song or the proclaimers! Whistle

AS you say, its just personal opinions.............but who is right and who is wrong Huh

I'd say 'sunshine on Leith' is melancholy and rousing, a beautiful song. Whilst the hertz song is a lame brained dirge.  But aye I am biased.

For what its worth I dont reckon the atmosphere at tynie is anything like it was back in the 70s and 80s. Its main advantage now is having the fans close to the pitch. They don't really have any songs, apart from ...well you know the one. Laugh

That's my main point Jim. It's like "time stood still" for them when it comes to that kinda stuff. And Newhaven, I'm really surprised you made no comment re the 2016 Scottish Cup final "great atmosphere" when legions of Hibs fans were in "full voice" v Rangers at Hampden Park rather than dwelling on scarf-twirling (there are not that many other footie clubs with fans who actually do this!) and flag-waving of Hertz fans plus a "put down" of a great song called Sunshine on Leith that is highly regarded in music circles and has been for years although accepted there will always be some folk who dislike it albeit in a minority IMO - based on current and past positive chat/requests on music radio down the years??? As though Hibs fans never did any flag-waving in matches gone by! I certainly don't regard it as one huge factor to add to a match atmosphere and it doesn't last very long anyway unless Hertz are winning. I regard a full display of held high Hibs scarves throughout the stands as superior to that kinda scarf-twirling nonsense, but everyone to their own opinion. Also I'm surprised Inverurie Jambo never gave you another "like" on thread #17! Wink

Opinions eh

0762, When was the last time Sunshine on Leith was sung during a game in big numbers to inspire the team.........never, because the fans cannot sing it without the record being played . A few occasionally try to start it but it soon peters out. I didn't deride it.....I said it was slow.....that in itself doesn't make it a "bad" song"!!!!!
Just because they are one of the few clubs to twirl scarfs (in this country anyway)...... is that wrong? When did you last see Hibs scarfs held aloft during a game at ER.......I cannot remember and even the other week when S on L was played twice very few raised their scarfs.

Don't get me wrong I love the song and have seen the Proclaimers many times, always sing it and raise my scarf but the only time it is impressive is when we have just had a major victory, 2016 Cup Final as you say. There is a difference between this and being able to give a rendition of a song during a game to inspire the team Fortunately we have a few others of these and agree, more the Hearts.

As for Inverurie Jambo, if he stays within the rules of the forum we should encourage other users onto the forum and try to increase the numbers ( there are precious few) and just because he supports a team that are our rivals should not be a reason to deride him. Obviously if things go beyond banter from anyone, I will step in.

Oh, and he did "like" #17 Wink
