Blades 2-2 Preston - report

United's pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Friday ended all square, with the visitors equalising in the final seconds of the game.

John Lundstram's first-half opener was cancelled out by a Daniel Johnson penalty, only for Billy Sharp to score with a spot-kick of his own minutes later. The Blades looked on course for another win until Jayden Stockley scored from a late corner.

For the final pre-season action before the Premier League opener against Wolves, Lundstram started, whilst McBurnie partnered Sharp in attack.

It was a very quiet opening 15 minutes or so on a lovely afternoon at S2. Norwood won and delivered a free-kick from a dangerous position, but Bauer did enough to stop Jack Robinson getting on the end of it. Moments later, Norwood sent in a cross from the left, it wasn't cleared properly, but Pearson blocked Lundstram's goal bound effort.

At the other end, Preston threatened three times is six minutes, including hitting the woodwork twice in as many seconds. Foderingham was equal to Bodin's tame effort, but was indebted to his goal frame as Sinclair hit the post having beaten the challenges of Robinson and Jagielka, before Barkhuizen rattled the bar on the rebound.

But it was the Blades who took the lead in the latter stages of the first period. Bryan's cross from the left wasn't cleared properly and after Osborn was denied, McBurnie teed up LUNDSTRAM who calmly stroked the ball home into the bottom corner.

Within 60 seconds of the restart, United could have doubled the lead. Mousset beat the offside trap but dragged his effort wide of Hudson's far post. And that miss was punished by the visitors on 54 minutes. Barkhuizen advanced into the area following a slip by Jagielka and referee Moss pointed straight to the spot following a challenge by the retreating Robinson. From 12 yards, North End skipper JOHNSON sent Foderingham the wrong way.

But before the hour, United were back in front. Pearson was adjudged to have handled in the box under pressure from Mousset and unsurprisingly, SHARP converted from the spot for his third goal of pre-season.

The game remained open and both sides were creating chances, the most obvious one saw Osborn rattle the bar with a shot after Basham had robbed Sinclair high up the pitch. But with the last action of the contest, Preston managed to draw level. Gallagher's corner from the left caused United problems and STOCKLEY was able to bundle the ball home.

Blades: Foderingham, Baldock, Basham, Lundstram (Slater 45), McBurnie (Mousset 45, Hackford 72), Sharp, Jagielka, Norwood, J. Robinson, Osborn, Bryan.
Unused: Verrips, Gordon, Graham, Brunt.

Sheffield United 2 Preston North End 2
Preston North End grabbed a deserved equaliser with the last touch of the game against Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Alex Neil’s men twice came from behind to stay unbeaten in pre-season, in their penultimate outing before the Championship kicks-off at home to Swansea City in a week’s time.

John Lundstram gave the hosts the lead, against the run of play, nine minutes before half-time, but the sides exchanged penalties before the hour mark, firstly Daniel Johnson levelling matters, before home skipper Billy Sharp put his team back in front just before the hour mark.

However, in the final move of the match, two North End substitutes combined, with Jayden Stockley bravely getting on the end of Paul Gallagher’s left-wing corner to head home past Wes Foderingham to make it 2-2.

It was an entertaining game, with the Lilywhites in their new blue away kit, skippered by Johnson, coming into the game after the opening 20 minutes, when the best chance fell the way of the home side, Ben Osborn crossing from the left, winning a corner off Patrick Bauer, before Scott Sinclair made a good block to deny Lundstram’s effort from the right corner of the penalty area.

This opportunity brought PNE to life. Billy Bodin saw a left foot shot saved by former Rangers man Foderingham after good build up play by Ben Pearson and Andrew Hughes before the woodwork twice denied them an opener in five seconds!

It was 32 minutes in and Sinclair managed to evade three tackles and he blasted away through the middle of the Blades defence before finding himself in on goal, the former Celtic man beating his former close Glasgow rival with a shot across the ’keeper, only for it to come off the right-hand upright. It fell perfectly for Tom Barkhuizen, but his shot back towards goal also came off the same post and out for the goal kick.

And, like most teams that finish in the top half of the Premier League, they punished North End’s profligacy by taking the lead shortly after, Kean Bryan’s cross from the left finding Oli McBurnie, who laid the ball off to Lunstram, five yards further in than his earlier effort, this time finding the bottom left corner of Mathew Hudson’s goal, the young stopper having no chance.

The visitors made a short-lived change at the break Lys Mousset – who was later substituted himself after an injury – replacing McBurnie and the Frenchman was close to a second less than 90 seconds into the second half, bursting free and beating Hudson, but also dragging his shot wide of the left-hand post.

And this time it was the visitors who did the punishing for the miss as Barkhuizen – a constant menace in the latter period – getting in behind the United defence and forcing Jack Robinson to bring him down in the penalty area, with Premier League official Jon Moss having no hesitancy in pointing to the spot.

Johnson took in and coolly sent the goalkeeper who lined up against PNE in the 2015 Play-Off Final the wrong way to level matters, the ball nestling in the bottom right corner.

But within three minutes, the official was again pointing to the mark 12 yards from goal, this time in PNE’s penalty area, when he adjudged Pearson handled the ball; Chris Ward the closest assistant making the decision.

Captain Sharp stepped up and send Hudson the wrong way to put his side back in front.

On the hour mark Barkhuizen again used his pace to burst through on goal, down a right-hand channel, before seeing Johnson’s run and finding him with a good squared ball, but the No.11 also tried to then pass it on again, to Sinclair, however, he was not as close as DJ had perceived and ball was cleared.

Sinclair, who was a real thorn in the side of steel city side, found Barkhuizen again with a ball in behind on the left and the attacker burst into the box, before firing with his right foot, but the shot was straight into the arms of Foderingham.

With 15 minutes left another good chance came when Johnson burst his way through and fed Bodin in space, but the Welsh winger was unable to get his shot away and on the counter the Blades went close to extending their lead as Osborn hit a wicked left-foot shot that cannoned back off the left stanchion of post and bar, Joe Rafferty neatly tidying up with a cool header back into the arms of Hudson from the rebound.

Two chances to equaliser came in the last three minutes, as Rafferty crossed from the right, flicked on by substitute Brad Potts, but it was taken off the feet of Stockley by Chris Basham and then Potts himself saw Foderingham make a fine save with his feet to deny him from 12 yards.

But with the game entering the final few seconds, the one final chance came and Gallagher delivered a near perfect left wing corner and a brave leap from Stockley in between Phil Jagielka and Basham saw him get a perfect header on the ball to divert it down into the right corner of the goal for a much-deserved equaliser, followed by Mr Moss’ whistle to draw an entertaining game and a great work out for both sides to a close.

Everton 2 Preston North End 0

Preston North End rounded off their pre-season fixture programme at Goodison Park, with Everton the victors by two goals to nil.

In an entertaining encounter, Alex Neil’s men gave a very good account of themselves and but for the exploits of young goalkeeper Harry Tyrer would have no doubt have taken something from the game.

It was a fully different starting XI to the one that drew 2-2 with Sheffield United 24 hours previous, with Ethan Walker getting his first senior start down the right-hand side of the front three.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Blues started brightly, with Connor Ripley making a brilliant reaction save from Gylfi Sigurdsson after 90 seconds, his shot deflecting off Jordan Storey and almost looping over the ’keeper, but for his excellent reflexes.

But the hosts were in front on seven minutes – Ryan Ledson’s best friend, Jonjoe Kenny sliding home from just outside the six yard box, toe ending the ball past Ripley when Theo Walcott’s attempted pass ricocheted off Storey and allowed the midfielder to break through.

However, the second part of the opening period was all North End. The loss of Mason Holgate at the back for the Toffeemen made a difference as Jayden Stockley began to dominate up front.

On 25 minutes a free kick from skipper Paul Gallagher, from the right of penalty area, after foul on Ethan Walker, saw a Paul Huntington header seemingly come off Anthony Gordon and go wide, but a corner was not given by referee Rob Jones.

Before the half hour mark a great chance to level came as Josh Harrop did well, held the ball up for Brad Potts to run through, he slid ball through to run of Stockley, who was in on goal, but his powerful shot was straight at Tyrer.

Eight minutes before the interval Stockley was karate kicked by Kenny near his throat – and he would have received a red card in a league game, but escaped with a yellow. Gallagher’s resulting 20-yard free kick was inches wide of the left-hand post with Tyrer beaten.

Chances continued and a good move saw Stockley hold up the ball, finding Potts, who fed Darnell Fisher – making his return from injury. The No.2’s cross found Stockley, but his bullet header flashed wide.

But the best chance was two minutes before half-time and it took a superb save from Tyrer to deny Walker, who charged down the right from Stockley’s flick on. It was a great run and shot from the 18-year-old, arrowed towards the bottom left-hand corner, but somehow the stopper got down to turn the ball just around the post.

North End had the ball in the back of the net on 62 minutes, Bayliss firing home after some superb build-up play, Stockley finding the run of Harrop, who squared for Bayliss to fire home, but assistant Darren Cann adjudged Harrop to have been offside when he received the ball, despite it looking very tight.

But it was 2-0 shortly after as a superb touch from Walcott allowed Bernard to break through with pace, feeding the ball out to Richarlison on the left, who drilled an early ball across to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whose initial effort was brilliantly stopped by Ripley, but it came back off the keeper and into the empty net, very unlucky for the man between the sticks.

Another great save from Tyrer kept the lead to two on 76 minutes. This time Harrop delivered a quality free kick from the right and Jordan Storey rose highest to power a header from 15 yards out that somehow the young stopper tipped onto the bar and Calvert-Lewin completed the clearance and the game ended 2-0.

Everton line-up: Tyrer, (Hansen, 90) Holgate (John, 31), Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin (Simms, 82), Sigurdsson ©, Walcott (Bolasie, 67), Nkounkou, Bernard (Adeniran, 88), Gordon (Baningime, 78), Kenny, Gibson.

PNE line-up: Ripley, Fisher (Rafferty, 73), Earl, Bayliss, Storey, Huntington, Walker (O’Reilly, 73), Gallagher © (Johnson, 73), Stockley, Potts (Baxter, 88), Harrop. Subs not used: Hudson, Pearson, Bauer, Davies, Hughes, Ledson, Barkhuizen, Bodin, Baxter.
