Utterly astonishing day of cricket, to win by one wicket when they had zero chance of winning. Credit to Leach for possibly the greatest 1 not out in history and Joel Wilson for the non giving of a plumb LBW, Lyon missing a run out and the Aussies going to pot at the end, truly wonderful bring on the hundred

Stunning. Last week I had a visitor over from the US and we watched some of the Lords test together while I tried to explain how a game could last 5 days (well, ok 3 and a bit with England's batting) and end up in a thrilling climax. I think he got it in the end but how I wish he'd been able to witness this!

Brilliant sport and such a shame that the Aussies screwed up the run out and review........

No great deal, themaclad. 1 run per over would have been good enough over two days, if England had stayed in. But Stokes doesn't believe in hanging about! He made it his victory with great assistance from Leach.

theo_luddite - thank god my Town PFP prediction doesn't carry over into the cricket.

I said last night that it would be up alongside Headingley '81 if we won, but even I wasn't expecting this. That will deservedly go down as one of the greatest Test matches of all time, and if Stokes doesn't win Sports Personality of the Year come December then something's very wrong.

Stokes was stunning. It was a fantastic innings and extremely well constructed from caution theough to finally a batting blitz.

But is plasters over massive cracks with our rope 4 line up.

Roy has to go. Not convinced dropping him to 4 will be any different but I’d accept it.

Denly and Burns as openers is spoken about but I am not convinced Burns should be there either.

Stokes is a wonderful and exciting cricketer. But he can’t win the Ashes in his own. There has to be change and we need to play Test Cricket.

Wonderful as today was it turned into a ‘white’ ball bash.

Stop spoiling the moment Laugh

Roy's definitely on borrowed time, but I think Burns's century at Edgbaston has bought him a reprieve for the rest of the series. Stokes has laid down the marker now for the rest of our batsmen; I can only hope that it really is a "Botham '81" moment which lifts the whole team and pushes them on in the last two Tests.
