I said we should have been looking at this lad and his bro' for when Wagbo left ages ago. How could we be keeping an eye on a German coach for 3 years and fail to notice these lads?
Probably the same way we fail to notice decent kids playing for local teams on our own door step I suppose.
I don’t for one minute believe we had in mind for the past 3 years.
While we’re at it, didn’t they tell tell us we will play a style of football from the first team all the way down to the academy so in the event of DW leaving we would still play the same way...which we don’t really, totally different formation.

DW's method wasn't working - not anywhere near the opposition penalty area anyway. It was broken from the start when you look back. We played Boro off the park for 70-80 minutes until we ran out of puff and lost 0-2, disguised by playing keep ball for 75 minutes almost every match. Little did we realise at the time that Huddersfield 0 was about to become our new name when the results were being read out Saturday tea-time. It needed fixing ...... and it still does, unfortunately. Got to agree with you there Wakey.
On the plus side, we've got to have the most improved penalty decision count in European Football, and we've got a centre forward that actually wants to take them. Mounié can't run and hide at the far post for a penalty so he doesn't take them, why do we pay him?
In team news for tonight, I see that VLP can't even make the starting 11 for this game.
His motor mouth must have well and truly pissed off yet another manager/head coach.
So far it seems we've had all the ball and they've had all the shots - nothing new there then. No radio interweb stream, no tellybox cameras ..... anywhere so far.

The Carabao Cup 1st round
Tuesday August 13th - 19:45 ko
at the John Smith's Stadium
Huddersfield Town welcome Lincoln City to the John Smith's Stadium on Tuesday night for the start of another League Cup campaign. And given that last season we were in the Premier League and our opponents were way down in the 4th tier, and our home advantage, we must be favourites to win this one. Yes?
Don't believe it. The Imps are going strong on the back of two promotions in three seasons and have started this season with back to back victories, against Accrington Stanley at home and at Rotherham on Saturday. Whereas we have stuttered more that started. There is unrest amongst the fans. People don't yet trust the new chairman, there are huge questions about the manager's tactics and his ability to motivate the team. And we've lost Aaron Mooy. This, one would suggest, is a must win game for Jan Siewert.
Fulham are here on Friday night, so not much rest between games, which will almost definitely mean lots of team changes for Town. Expect debuts for Reece Brown, Josh Koroma, Herbert Bockhorn and Trevoh Chalobah, as well as a return to the starting line up for Steve Mounié.
Keep reading right to the end and you will see how poor our recent record in the League Cup is and this will be anything but a stroll in the park for the Terriers. Should be a tense affair for home fans, but Imps fans have nothing to lose sleep over. Lose and hey, it was expected, but win and it's another big scalp, beating one of last season's Premier League teams.
Ticket prices: It’s Pay on the Gate, meaning supporters will only be able to buy their tickets when entering through the turnstiles. Disabled supporters will need to buy their tickets beforehand with tickets available from the Ticket Office.
Supporters will be able to sit on the Fantastic Media Upper Tier, the Core Stand Upper and Lower Tier and home section of the Abzorb Stand.
Adults - £10
Under-18s - £5
A brief history of Lincoln City: founded in 1884 after the disbanding of Lincoln Rovers, they turned professional in 1891, were founding members of the 2nd Division of the Football League in 1892 and moved into their home ground at Sincil Bank in 1895. They were in and out of the league up until the 1920s when the two new regionalised Football League Division 3s were begun, yoyoing between the 3rd Division (North) and the 2nd Division up until the 1962/63 season when they dropped to the 4th Division, a few years after the regionalised Division 3s had been made into national Div3 and 4.
They won the 4th Division title in 1975/76, with a record number of points, under the management of future England manager Graham Taylor. But they never progressed any higher and he left for Watford. The next time that the Imps made national news was in tragic circumstances. Two of their fans, Bill Stacey and Jim West, were among the 56 supporters who were killed in the Bradford City fire disaster in 1985. Subsequently these fans had the Stacey-West stand named after them.
Two years later, after having been relegated to Division 4 in 1986, they became the first team relegated automatically to the Conference (now National League) after the new promotion and relegation system came in. They bounced straight back up though as Conference Champions under the management of Colin Murphy.
In the early 2000s, they reached the 4th Division Play Offs (now League 2) for three consecutive years. They didn't get promoted in any of them though, losing to Bournemouth in 2003, Huddersfield Town in 2004 and then Southend Utd in 2005. These Play Off campaigns were all under the management of Keith Alexander, although he was ill with a serious brain injury during that 2004/05 season, he made enough of a recovery to manage the team to the Final after beating Macclesfield Town in the semis.
In 2011, they were back down in the Conference, having been relegated on the final day of the season when they lost and rivals for the drop, Barnet, won. Current manager Danny Cowley was appointed at the end of the 2015/16 season and he got them promoted back into the Football league the following season. Then in 2018 they achieved the crowning glory of their entire existence by winning the EFL Trophy, beating Shrewsbury Town 1-0 with a goal from Elliott Whitehouse.
And then last season they won promotion back to League One for the first time this century.

Head to Head
![[Image: s-l225.jpg]](https://i.ebayimg.com/thumbs/images/g/lisAAOSwy3dbLjA~/s-l225.jpg)
Town lead the head to head with 15 wins to Lincoln's 12, with 10 draws.
As mentioned earlier, we knocked Lincoln out of the Play Offs in 2004. And that was the last time the two clubs met. Since then our paths went off in totally different directions. Ours was upwards to the Premier League, theirs a downward spiral to the National League. But we're not that far apart again, just the one division. Anyway, the Play Off semi final first leg got off to a good start for us with Iffy Onuora, who had only just returned to the club after a few years away, to help his old mate and Town's manager Peter Jackson, getting the slightest touch off a Rob Edwards corner to put us 1-0 up in the 5th minute. Lincoln equalised soon after the break through a lad called Gary Fletcher, later to sign for us after he'd married and become known as Gary Taylor-Fletcher. But Town weren't to be denied the victory and in the 72nd minute from another set piece, David Mirfin put us ahead.
And so we returned to the MacAlpine Stadium with a 2-1 lead, which got wiped out in spectacular fashion just before half time. First Richard Butcher levelled on aggregate in the 38th minute and then Mark Bailey stunned the home crowd by giving the Imps an overall lead a minute later. Typical Town, we all thought! But once again, the lads responded to Jacko's fighting spirit and levelled late on through a penalty by Danny Schofield after Andy Booth had had his heel clipped in the area. We looked set for extra time now with the scores level, but then that famous Rob Edwards thunderbolt in the 83rd gave us the victory after some very nervy final few minutes. The crowd went wild! And then off to Cardiff, where we beat Mansfield Town in a penalty shoot out.
Earlier that season, we won 2-1 at home with a fortunate and rather controversial goal scored by Pawel Abbott. He was slowly walking back from our last attack when the ball got played forward. He was miles offside when the ball was played, but a Lincoln defender touched the ball with the top of his head as the ball went through. The liner immediately stuck his flag up, but the ref never whistled. Pav took the ball on and after rounding the non committal keeper, stuck the ball in the open goal. We all thought the ref was going to book him for time wasting, but no, after consulting his linesman, he pointed to the centre spot and we shouted "hurrah" in total amazement. Of course we get this kind of decision in the game all the time now, but back then it was quite a new ruling that wasn't always stuck rigid. The Lincoln players went apeshit! But it was the correct decision.
That season was our only season together since 1982/83. But in between those times we created a bit of footballing history in the Auto Windscreens Trophy (now EFL Trophy). The FL had introduced a new rule for extra time called the Golden Goal, in which the first goal scored in the 30 minutes of extra time, automatically wins the match. After a 2-2 draw in the 90 minutes with Town goals coming from Gary Crosby and a Ronnie Jepson penalty, it was the original "got no hair", Iain Dunn who became the first ever scorer of a golden goal. This was in the 1994/95 season and the rule stayed for about ten years before being dropped, but we have it in the record books as being the first to get one in English football.
We first met up way back in time, our first season in the Football League, 1910/11. Both matches were drawn. A 2-2 draw at Sincil Bank with both our goals scored by Henry Hamilton. And then a 1-1 draw at Leeds Road with James Richardson scoring ours.

So what's happening down at Sincil Bank? Managed now by Danny Cowley, with his brother Nicky as his assistant. Danny started out in football at Wimbledon in their youth set up, but had bad knees (suffering from Osgood-Schlatter disease, click the link if you want to know more). He did however play non league football as a midfielder for Barking, Romford, AFC Hornchurch and Brentwood Town before becoming manager at Concord Rangers. Here he won three promotions for the club all the way to the National League South and took them for the first time ever to the first round proper of the FA Cup, where they were beaten in a replay by Mansfield Town.
He was poached by National League side Braintree Town the year after and took them to their highest ever position of 3rd and a Play Off spot, which they lost 1-2 to Grimsby Town. After just one season he was on the move again, this time to Lincoln City.
A remarkable first season saw them promoted as champions, but also they became the first non league team in over a century to reach the FA Cup quarter finals. They beat Ipswich Town, Brighton and Premier League side Burnley on the way before eventually getting beat by Arsenal. Then as mentioned in the history section, he led them to the EFL Trophy and promotion to League 1.

Who's in their squad then? Well obviously Jack Payne who we all know about (see next section). Another familiar name to some of you will be Tyler Walker who we're contractually obliged to remind everybody is the "son of Des". He's on loan from Nottingham Forest, where his dad was a legend. The lad's 22 years old now and still hasn't established himself at the City Ground. He's played 33 times for them but keeps getting sent out on loan. He's been at Burton, Stevenage, Port Vale, Bolton and least year spent the whole season down the road at Mansfield Town. His 26 goals firing the Stags into the Play Offs, but as luck would have it, crucially missed a penalty in the shoot out against Newport.
John Akinde signed for them in the summer after scoring a load of goals for Barnet, a club record number of league goals actually. Scored on his debut against Accrington last week. The other scorer in that 2-0 victory over Stanley was Michael O'Connor, a Northern Ireland international midfielder with 13 caps for them. He came last year from Notts County. Harry Anderson an ex Peterborough winger, scored the second goal on Saturday in the win at Rotherham.
Another ex Barnet man is goalkeeper Josh Vickers who was there a couple of years ago, on loan from Swansea. Signed for the Imps after being released in 2017.
Welsh international right back, Neal Eardley is in his second season at Sincil Bank. Earlier in his career he played in the Premier League with Blackpool for our old friend Ian Holloway.
Centre back Jason Shackell is another one with Premier League experience. He was at Norwich in one of their top flight seasons and also had a season at the top with Burnley. Now 35 years old, he joined Lincoln last year.
One name that may also be familiar is Lee Frecklington, who was at Peterborough at the time of that match, although he wasn't involved on the day.
Jorge Grant, like Walker, was on loan from Forest at Mansfield last season. Signed for Lincoln in the summer for an undisclosed fee.
Club Connections: Jack Payne came to us from Southend Utd in the summer of 2016, just in time to go on holiday with his new team mates on a bleak, isolated island off the coast of Sweden. Famously scored the winner up at Newcastle but then struggled to hold down a regular place in the side. Went out on loan to Oxford Utd, Blackburn Rovers and Bradford City before being released in the summer. Made his Lincoln debut on the opening day of the season in a 2-0 home win over Accrington Stanley.
His last kick in a Town shirt was a penalty miss at Hillsborough. And what a miss! Instead of going down as a hero, a Town legend, he sacrificed all this just so as we could all have a great big laugh at Fernando Forestieri.

Peter Jackson and Iffy Onuora are Town legends. As mentioned earlier Jacko managed us to Play Off glory against the Imps and Big Iff scored at Sincil Bank. Three years later Jacko was appointed manager of the Imps and brought in Iffy as his assistant. Lincoln were rock bottom of the Football League at the time but finished the season in comfortable mid table. During the season though, Jacko was diagnosed with throat cancer. He went in for treatment with the Manager of the Month award in his pocket. Iffy took over and completed the job til Jacko came back and thankfully got the all clear.
However, the pair of them got sacked mid way through the next season.

Richard Logan is one of only four players to have scored a goal for Huddersfield Town at Wembley (not including penalty shoot outs). He scored the goal for us in the Autoglass Trophy (now EFL Trophy) Final in 1994. The others to have scored for us at Wembley are Alex Jackson (1928 FA Cup Final), Andy Booth and Chris Billy (1995 Play Off Final).
He was signed by Neil Warnock for Town at the same time as Darren Bullock and played 45 games for us before joining Warnock again at Plymouth Argyle, then on to Scunthorpe Utd and then to Lincoln City in 2000, signed by another Club Connection......

.....Phil Stant. He was manager at Sincil Bank in the 2000/01 season, having previously had two stints there as a striker. Nine years earlier he'd had a loan period with us, playing five games and scoring one goal, on loan from Warnock's Notts County. We were one of 20 clubs he played for in a career that didn't get started until he was 24. And that's because he was in the Army.
He joined the Army in 1982 and played football for Camberley Town. However, in 1984, he was part of the military operation in the Falklands War, serving with 5 Infantry Brigade. Prior to the war, he'd played 4 times for Reading, but after he'd returned to England and spending some time with the SAS, he signed for Hereford Utd.
His Falkland story was part of an ITV documentary a few years ago.

Theo Robinson had two spells at Town. First of all signed by Lee Clark in 2009 to partner Jordan Rhodes. And then following transfers to Millwall and then Derby County, he came back on loan from the Rams in 2013.
In 2016 he signed for National League side Lincoln City and was part of their incredible journey to the FA cup quarter finals. However, he'd got off the trip before they reached that destination, having signed for one of his old clubs, Southend Utd, in the January transfer window.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher as mentioned earlier, scored in the Play Offs against us and then joined us the following season. becoming part of the Town tradition of signing players from teams we've just knocked out in the Play Offs. Others being Marcus Stewart and Marcus Browning (Bristol Rovers), Martyn Margetson (Brentford), Junior Mendes (Mansfield), Donal McDermott and Anton Robinson (Bournemouth) and most recently Danny Williams from Reading.
GTF had two season with us and had some good highlights. One of them scoring a 25 yard screamer in a match against Rotherham, which turned out to be the 500,000th goal scored in the Football League. He scored for us down at Chelsea in the FA Cup and also the goal against Barnsley at Oakwell that gave us a slight 1st leg advantage in the 2006 Play Offs, which we went on to cock up in the home leg.
![[Image: 0_i25131595_4_6546_034_JPGJPG.jpg]](https://i2-prod.lincolnshirelive.co.uk/incoming/article2691817.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/0_i25131595_4_6546_034_JPGJPG.jpg)
Jamie McCombe played for both clubs. He'd been at Scunthorpe and Halifax before his first stint at Sincil Bank. Signed on there in 2004 and left 2 years later to join Bristol City after making 87 appearances. He had 4 years with the Robins and then signed for Lee Clark at Town, making his debut in the great opening day 3-0 victory at Notts County in 2010. He had a spell on loan at Preston, returning to play in another brilliant away victory, 6-0 at Wycombe and made 20 appearances in that Play Off winning season of 2012. He was then released and joined Doncaster.
He's now back with the Imps, at first as just a player, but has now taken on a coaching role as well.
Recent form: Town are 19th in the Championship with 1 point. The Imps are 2nd in League One with 6 points.
Opening results:
Town 1-2 Derby
QPR 1-1 Town
Lincoln 2-0 Accrington
Rotherham 0-2 Lincoln
Town's League Cup record: is really poor, considering what a big club we are.
Our best season was back in the 1967/68 season, the season I first started watching. We reached the semi finals then, losing to Arsenal over two legs, but I didn't see any of these games, probably because I was only 7 and my dad obviously thought I was too young for night matches.
Anyway, to get to that stage we beat Wolves at home 1-0, Norwich away 1-0, West Ham at home 2-0, and Fulham 2-1 at home in a replay after a 1-1 draw down at theirs.
In the semi final we went down to Highbury for the first leg and narrowly lost 3-2, with goals from Trevor Cherry and Colin Dobson. Back at Leeds Road for the second leg we drew level on aggregate when Tony Leighton scored early on, but Arsenal scored three times to make it 6-3.
We had a famous win at Bellend Road in 1982/83, which was a 3rd round match. Third division Town had won two legged encounters over Doncaster Rovers and Oxford Utd and then beat the "Champions of Europe", Leeds United 1-0 with a second half goal from David Cowling, which in those days of Town being in their massive shadow, was a thing to celebrate. We lost 1-0 at Arsenal in the next round.
We have only got as far as the 4th round on three occasions. In the 67/68 and 82/83 seasons already mentioned, and in 1999/2000.
That last one was the year we won down at Chelsea in the 3rd round, a famous win and a famous goal coming from Kenny Irons. Earlier we had beaten Scunthorpe Utd and Notts County, both over two legs. And then we went out in the 4th round, beaten at home by Wimbledon 2-1 after extra time.
Since then our record has been appalling. This century we have only reached the 3rd round three times. In 2003/04, our post administration season under the guidance of Peter Jackson, we beat Derby at home and Sunderland away before losing at Reading. In 2013/14, home victories over Bradford City and Charlton Athletic gave us hope of a cup run, only to be dashed by a 1-0 defeat at Hull City. And most recently in 2017/18 when we had a first round bye before beating Rotherham at home and losing at Crystal Palace.
We have been embarrassed by lower league opposition, the likes of Oldham, Rochdale, Mansfield, Notts County and Shrewsbury have all given us a rotten kick up the arse.
We got a bye to the 2nd round last year, due to being in the Premier League, but ended up losing 0-2 at Stoke with a comedy own goal from Juninho Bacuna putting a tin hat on the defeat in injury time.
So the only managers to get us to the 4th round of the League Cup are all club legends. Ian Greaves, Mick Buxton and errm *cough cough* Steve Bruce. Is Jan Siewert the man to do it this season?
Apologies if you've read most of this before. A lot of it is copied from last season's thread.
Brilliant write up - well done.

Ryan Schofield. What an outstanding performance from the young man tonight. Three or four brilliant saves, kept us in the game. His kicking needs working on, but we have ourselves a keeper for the future there. Easily man of the match tonight for us.
The real man of the match though was that little number ten in the Lincoln side. What a performance he put in tonight (apart from his terrible miss, which was offside anyway). Who was that man? Wish we had a player like that.
As for the reaction at full time. I can't think of any Town manager being booed from the pitch before., which is what happened if you didn't see it. he was booed, walked down the tunnel, then came back again to shake hands with the players and then got booed off again. A bit harsh I thought. He's 36 years old, in his first management job, been thrown in at the deep end and he's well out of his depth.
And then there was the chairman, on his phone after the game, walking up and down the touchline as Oggy and Mel Booth and the rest of the waiting press pack looked on. Who's he talking to? Asking Chris Hughton what time he can get here in the morning? Doubt it.
Anyway, as soon as he got off the phone, disappeared down the tunnel, out came Jan. And he says he and the chairman are both on the same wavelength and all is good.
Well make of that what you want, but all is not well. One more game I reckon. Defeat on Friday night and the whole place will go ballistic.

I wasnt planning to schlepp up the M1 for this tonight but my lad who is just about to commence his travels wanted to get his last game till Xmas in, so agreed.
Make no mistake, Lincoln deserved the win cos they came with a game plan, were compact, lively and courageous backed by perhaps 800 or more who supported them well. They should have had a 2nd but it was clawed off the line.
Town were awful for all but 25 mins late in each half. Really disappointed to say the only ones coming out of this well were Schofield for his shot stopping, certainly not his kicking which is woeful, Edmonds Green will have learnt a few things marking Akinde, Bacuna who was poor had our best & only first half efforts from distance, I guess he's started the season so poorly he can only benefit from game time to try and find that missing form. The 2 full backs Jaden Brown and Brockhurst nothing to write home about, Koroma;s touch not great, Reece Brown hardly noticed him, Chalobah wanted way too much time, Mbenza dreadful nowhere near a start. Kachunga as skipper give me a break, Stinkovich over worked but did ok at centre half. Mounie had a header wide late on and appeals for a pen turned down by which time we were desperate for owt.
In fact VLP got the loudest cheer for coming on and looked lively ( I;m no fan of Mr Wantawaytobetterthings) but he deserves to be in and around the team for Friday for his work this evening. We didnt have the same level of effort or fight and certainly lacked physical presence, never took anyone on, poor crossing and general lack of urgency.
I'd say just about everyone left, vented their displeasure at FT and I;m not suprised Seaweed didnt come out till 10.45 for a brief press conference once Radio Weeds had gone off air leaving Oggy in the tunnel waiting. Personally I;d have intercepted their manager Cowley and sounded him out cos Martin from Wakefield is skippering a one man ship at the moment, his crew arent with him and more of this and the mood of the support will just let rip.
I'll give him to middle of next week, 2 losses v Fulham and the Druids and the Mega Bus can take him back to Wakefield or wherever he lives.

Typical Town fans though. Van la Parra and Mounie now regarded as returning heroes.
Well as we sang to the Arsenal fans when they were hailing Arsene Wenger, we can now sing to ourselves.....
......You two faced bastards, you wanted him out!
