Specsavers County Championship Division Two, Emirates Old Trafford (day two):
Sussex 127: Salt 40; Parkinson 6-23, Maxwell 4-41 & 15-0
Lancashire 494-6 dec: Vilas 132*, Jones 88, Davies 72, Jennings 65, Maxwell 59; Beer 2-76
Sussex (1 pt) trail Lancashire (7 pts) by 352 runs with 10 wickets standing
Scorecard
Lancashire captain Dane Vilas hit an unbeaten 132 to help put his side in command against out-of-form Sussex.

Vilas was backed-up by half-centuries from Rob Jones (88) and Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell (59) as the Red Rose were able to declare on 494-6.

It gave the hosts a lead of 367 as they pressed on from an overnight 149-1 and put themselves in pole position to strengthen their promotion chances.

Sussex saw out four overs before stumps to reach 15-0 in their second innings.

The highlight for Lancashire was a first County Championship century of the season for Vilas.

But luckless England opener Keaton Jennings' hopes of adding to his overnight 53 were ended when he cut Mir Hamza very hard to backward point where Delray Rawlins clutched a brilliant one-handed catch high to his left.

Relive County Championship action as it happened
Lancashire batsman Rob Jones:

"In the previous couple of games we didn't start as well as we wanted. But we wanted to come out and set the tone because we know how big the game against Sussex is.

"So to bowl them out as we did and then to bat long has been great and it's set us up to win this game.

"It was a different role in that I had to play a lot of spin. It was great to bat with Glenn Maxwell because he knows a lot about batting against spin and he's a very experienced cricketer."

Sussex all-rounder Delray Rawlins:

"It was a tough day for the boys. We knew when we turned up it wouldn't be easy but we stuck to it pretty well and hopefully we can bat on.

"We all know we haven't been scoring the runs we want. They stuck the ball in some pretty decent areas but hopefully the boys can prove a point. You never know what can happen in this great game.

"As for the catch off Jennings, luckily it stuck. Most people thought it had gone for four. But he hit it reasonably well and I think that's what helped it to stick."

MY VIEW

All too easy for the Red Rose today all batsman got runs apart from Hameed, Jennings would have got a lot more sadly got out to an outstanding catch by Rawlins, he stood there for about 30 seconds unable to comprehend he had been caught. Jones batted well and the Captain Fantastic scored an esy century.
Looked a poor Sussex side, tomorrow will be my last day at Old Trafford until September suspect a tougher day tomorrow but we'll win

Easy win for the Red Rose although Rawlins and Wiesse blasted a century plus partnership in next to no time with Rawlins hitting his first ever ton, deserved win

Penrhyn Avenue is a cricket ground in Colwyn Bay, Wales. The ground was first used by the Glamorgan 1st XI in 1966, although County Championship matches have only been an annual fixture since 1990 (with the exception of 1991 and 1996). In 2015, the ground hosted a County Championship match against Lancashire, during which Lancashire batsmen Ashwell Prince and Alviro Petersen put on a ground record partnership of 501 for the third wicket. In 2016, the ground will once again play host to Glamorgan for one County Championship match, against Derbyshire.

The ground has hosted 32 first-class matches and 28 List A matches, as well as several matches in the Minor Counties Championship, both for Denbighshire and the Wales Minor Counties.

First-class
Highest team score: 718/3dec – Glamorgan vs. Sussex (22–25 August 2000)
Lowest team score: No team has ever been bowled out for less than 100 on this ground[citation needed]
Best batting performance: 309 not out – Steve James for Glamorgan vs. Sussex (22–25 August 2000)
Best bowling performance: 9/49 – Tony Cordle for Glamorgan vs. Leicestershire (21–24 June 1969)

A not great forecast for our visit to North Wales for the annual squeeze a four dayer in between 20/20 fixtures, win this one and it's basically our Championship

Division Two leaders Lancashire finished day one in control on 85-1 in reply to Glamorgan's 257 all out.

Tom Bailey, back after two months out with a knee injury, and Danny Lamb did the damage, taking four wickets each as Glamorgan collapsed in mid-afternoon.

There were contrasting fifties from a patient Charlie Hemphrey, on-loan debutant Samit Patel and hard-hitting tail-ender Lukas Carey.

Lancashire then lost opener Alex Davies for 32 but Keaton Jennings is on 46.

Jennings drove stylishly when the players reappeared for a late final half-hour following an hour's rain-break.

County Championship as it happened
Earlier Lamb, brother of Lancashire Thunder Kia Super League player Emma Lamb, claimed his first first-class victims in his fifth match.

Lamb, who made his debut last summer as an injury replacement for Joe Mennie at Worcester, helped Glamorgan slip from 139-4 to 146-8, before some late hitting from Patel, Carey and Michael Hogan (32) helped the hosts to two unlikely batting points.

But the visitors' bowling proved too strong to allow a respectable total, despite the slow pitch and the late withdrawal of Graham Onions with hamstring trouble,

A crowd of nearly two thousand, many of them supporting the visitors, packed the Colwyn Bay club ground at Rhos on Sea for this promotion-chasers' clash.

Glamorgan's England all-rounder Samit Patel told BBC Sport Wales:

"I wasn't going to be taking part for Notts in Scarborough, but director of cricket Mick Newell said Glammy had come in for me to play four-day cricket, so I was thrilled to bits to do that.

"An opportunity in the Euro-league got cancelled. I can go back and play T20 for Notts but hopefully to get promotion for Glamorgan is on the agenda. I haven't really thought about next season.

"The wicket is a good one, we're probably a bit short with the bat, but we've got to keep grinding away."

Lancs all-rounder Danny Lamb told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"I absolutely loved it. It's good for me to help the team like that and we'd have taken bowling them out for 250. It seems a pretty good deck and hopefully we can capitalise on this.

"I'm just pleased I'm playing after the injuries I've had. I was a bit nervous, but I've been around the team and it's not quite as nerve-wracking as Headingley away against Yorkshire in the Roses match last season.

"I just tried to concentrate on what I do in the second team, keep it simple and it seemed to work, so we're very happy with where we are in the match.

Lancashire 544 for 9 (Vilas 266, Jennings 86) lead Glamorgan 257 (Hemphrey 56, Patel 54, Carey 51) by 287 runs

Dane Vilas, the Lancashire captain, hit the highest score of the Championship season with a quite magnificent career-best innings of 266 on the second day of their game against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay, guiding his team into a commanding lead.

With two days remaining and a favourable weather forecast, the visitors are well placed to return to Division One especially as they are likely to gain maximum points from this game.

After Keaton Jennings had anchored the innings with his innings of 86 from 191 balls spread over four hours and 20 minutes, Vilas came to the crease at the fall of the fourth wicket, and on a placid pitch where there was minimal assistance for the bowlers, he dominated the Glamorgan attack.

He soon passed fifty, before reaching his second successive Championship century and his sixth for Lancashire from 102 balls, reaching three figures with successive sixes off Charlie Hemphrey 's occasional offspin.

He quickly passed 150, before turning his attention to Lukas Carey, striking the medium pacer for 20 in an over before racing to his double century by guiding Graham Wagg for a single.

It was the highest score in the Championship since Sean Dickson's 318 on a flat Beckenham pitch two summers ago, and passed Dom Sibley's 244 at Canterbury to become the highest of this season.

Earlier, Michael Hogan had given Glamorgan hope shortly after play began by taking 2 for 5 in five overs, with Josh Bohannon nicking to the wicketkeeper and Liam Livingstone taken at second slip. Glenn Maxwell threatened with some early aggression, before he was well caught on the long leg boundary by Nick Selman.

Rob Jones gave Vilas useful support by adding 115 with his captain for the fifth wicket, and scoring 33, before he was run out by Hemphrey whilst attempting a risky single to mid-off. Danny Lamb, the promising young allrounder who took four wickets the previous day, then shared a partnership of 111 with Vilas before being bowled one short of a maiden fifty.

Tom Bailey came and went quickly, but there was no stopping Vilas who passed his previous best score of 244, scored against Hampshire at Old Trafford two years ago. Saqib Mahmood contributed just four runs to a 55-run partnership, as Vilas continued to plunder the attack.

He was eventually bowled, heaving at David Lloyd's medium pace, having faced 240 balls with 35 boundaries and six sixes, two of which threatened the cars travelling down Penrhyn Avenue.

Lancashire 544 for 9 (Vilas 266, Jennings 86) beat Glamorgan 257 (Hemphrey 56, Patel 54, Carey 51, Bailey 4-50) and 138 (Mahmood 3-42, Bailey 3-44) by an innings and 150 runs

Lancashire increased their lead at the top of Division Two with a comprehensive win in under three days against a Glamorgan team who were outclassed in every department, with the margin of victory - an innings and 150 runs - a clear indication of the difference between the two teams.

While Lancashire, on their performances this season, will provide formidable opposition in Division One next year, Glamorgan, who were second before this game but are likely to move a few places lower after the current round of fixtures, will need to improve significantly if they are to gain promotion.

Apart from Dane Vilas' brilliant innings that enabled Lancashire take a lead of 288 on first innings, their seam attack probed incessantly in both innings, with the impressive Danny Lamb, in only his fifth first-class game claiming 6 for 89 in the match.

Lancashire resumed on 544 for 8, but their innings lasted only four balls before Saqib Mahmood edged Samit Patel to slip after a single had been added. When Glamorgan began their second innings, Nick Selman was almost dismissed from the first ball of the innings when Tom Bailey failed to hold on to a return catch.

Instead, the Glamorgan openers made it into the 15th over before being parted, Lamb removing Selman lbw to make it 28 for 1.

Five runs later Charlie Hemphrey departed, also leg before to Lamb, who was quickly followed by Shaun Marsh, and when David Lloyd and Billy Root were dismissed by Richard Gleeson in successive deliveries, the home team had subsided to 40 for 4. Patel and Chris Cooke then shared an useful partnership of 42, before both were out leg before - Cooke the fifth lbw victim of the innings and the team's top scorer with 41.

The last four wickets fell for 15 runs, and at 3.30pm Lancashire were on their way home, with Glamorgan left to reflect on their two recent heavy Championship defeats - to Middlesex by 256 runs and here by an innings.
