I made it my avatar to show my support for the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month. At the end of the month I may then change back to my old West Brom flag.

Here is the history of the flag and why it is used by the LGBTQ+ community:

Thank you for that insight, I have learnt something new today, however I still feel like the Rainbow has been taken over by a movement that I have no problem with and actually feel like its one of those classic, "we'll do what we want moments". I am confusing myself slightly about what I'm trying to say really! What does it matter what or who you are, as long as you don't hurt or offend people! I just don't understand why a beautiful neutral symbol needs to be hijacked and it's future use by myself, leaves me feeling slightly on show for absolutely no reason!
As I say I am not homophobic and would actively encourage my children to be happy with themselves, however they end up. I just don't understand why there has to be a mass outing to get acknowledgement or recognition! I like woman so what, you men out there may like other men so what! Why does everything have to be highlighted and thrusted upon us, if I was gay, I wouldn't want to continually announce it to the world, life is already going to be slightly harder for you, why make it harder??
I appreciate everybody has an opinion and respect those, thankfully we live in a democracy and the fear of "stonewall" is or shouldn't be an issue. On a sidenote, I read on the BBC about those 2 young ladies on a London bus who were beaten up for refusing to kiss! This is disgusting and the guilty parties should be hung by the metaphorical balls and taught a lesson!
I don't know why I'm writing this but seeing the Rainbow flag lately has annoyed me, when asked by my children 6 & 8 respectively, why are there lots of Rainbow flags around Daddy, I like those in Birmingham schools lately, don't want to talk about my son about his sexuality at a tender age, his world is tough enough without this added pressure. It's good to have a portal like this where speaking your mind in an adult way will not be vilified, rant over, where's the medicine cabinet Sleeping

I might be naïve here, but is the Rainbow significant in the LBGT world? If so why the rainbow? I might be courting abuse here but I personally don't like how the Rainbow has been accosted by this group of people and taken over. I am not homophobic, my sister is a proud lesbian who I love dearly and can't wait to go to my first same sex wedding next year. Why is this beautiful neutral image now a badge? I think it's wrong, I might sound like a narrow minded old idiot but I'm not, I just hate having it pushed down my throat wherever I go, your persuasion is your persuasion, no problem, I don't thrust it down peoples throats that I am a hetrosexual man, why is it done the other way?!?!?

On a football note, no news is good news on the manager front?

Onetruebaggie, I agree with your point, I believe I am a fair minded bloke, but I too hate 1, things being hijacked and 2, people's causes being rammed down my throat. I worked for the government for thirty years, as a white heterosexual english male I was bottom of the pecking order. Unless you have a card to play, race, creed, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation etc etc you are overlooked. Vegans storm restaurants trying to spoil the enjoyment of and to make meat eaters feel guilty. Generally heterosexuals don't flaunt their sexuality in public. I disagree with some of these issues but I don't try to stop people living their lives their way. Let me live mine my way in peace.

At this rate all of us on the site will be receiving invitations for interviews. I just hope they’ve got enough room to accommodate Beefy’s, shall we say, rotund figure. Whistle

With regards to Almeida, Troyes seems to have been his most successful season in management getting them to third in the table before losing in the play-offs to Lens at home. I do follow Ligue 2 a little bit (Lorient mainly) so I will say that the season wasn’t exactly as it seems on the surface. They had a poor start and inconsistent middle which could have resulted in Almeida’s sacking. It was their form from February on that got them first into contention for the play-offs and then into the play-offs and up to 3rd.

It’s an interesting link but we need someone truly proven at this level or higher.

Just for the record, I've tried to separate out the rainbow flag discussion and move it to Off Topic, but unfortunately the site's demons are wreaking havoc with our mod tools, and it's just not happening, so it'll have to stay in here until I find a better option. Furthermore, I do appreciate the efforts both to keep the thread on-topic, and to keep the tangential discussion civil from all parties.

However, at the risk of continuing the derailment of the thread (and believe me, this is why I wanted to shift the topic elsewhere), I have to make a few broad points.

1. Pride is a about a group of people who in the not-too-distant past were forced by society to hide who they were, doing the exact opposite as both a celebration and a statement. "But I don't go around saying I'm proud to be heterosexual!" misses the pretty elementary point that no one has ever told you that you should be ashamed of it. No one has ever attacked you in the street for being out with a member of the opposite sex, like they did to those poor women on that London bus. At no point in human history has anyone ever been imprisoned or executed simply for being straight. And nor did these anti-gay attitudes just melt away by magic; society changed because LGBT people made themselves visible and made themselves heard, asking for equal rights under the law and acceptance in public life. Specifically, through movements like Pride.

2. You could make the argument, "But all of that stuff is in the past! Why are they still marching now?" And I think it's fair to say that there's probably no better time and place in history for someone to be gay than in the Western world in 2019. But that doesn't mean that things can't still be better: certainly, for those who are born into strict religious backgrounds and/or ethnic minorities where anti-gay taboos are still strong, being open about their sexuality can mean being cast out of their community, permanently breaking ties with their family - worst-case scenario, even winding up homeless or fearing for their life. Public Pride marches and events are a way of showing people in that kind of godawful dilemma that they don't have to spend their life living in shame and fear, concealing who they are. If they do come out, then there's a network of people who'll help and support them. And on top of that, in the age of social media, photos and videos from Pride events in the West spread around the world to countries where LGBT people are still persecuted, imprisoned and sentenced to death, and they become a symbol of hope to gay people there: the message is that if things can change so significantly in one place, then it can happen elsewhere too.

3. "They're pushing it down my throat!" is, I'm afraid, only an argument if there's a gay pride parade actually marching through your living room. Otherwise, it's a group of people having a party in a public place, as they're entitled to do in a free society. Same goes for St George's Day parades, Bonfire Night, Halloween, New Year, and countless others. You can choose not to take part, as many people do for those events I've just listed. Personally, I'm in favour of all. And why not?

4. "They've hijacked the rainbow!" Right. They took an otherwise neutral concept and made it the symbol of their community, which is literally how every flag and badge in existence has ever come into being, from the Albion throstle to the Red Cross. Anyone who feels hard done by on that score (a few old hippies with a wardrobe full of moth-eaten rainbow suits?) has my sympathy. But it's not unreasonable to ask what would be acceptable to them as an alternative. What could LGBT people use to represent themselves that wouldn't be a "hijacking"? A spoon? A parallelogram? A duck-billed platypus? The god Quetzalcoatl? If we're being honest here, everything would be a problem of one kind or another, wouldn't it? The rainbow at least has a solid and understandable meaning in the context of gay rights, and its use isn't doing any harm to anyone.

5. "Vegans storm restaurants and abuse meat-eaters!" And they're self-defeating idiots who are doing their cause more harm than good. But they're not LGBT people, so that's irrelevant to this issue. (If they were organising a celebration of veganism in city centres with food stalls and entertainment, and people could choose whether or not they wanted to participate, then that'd be just fine... as it is with Pride).

If you've made it this far, then thank you for reading. Apologies again for derailing the thread, and another thank you to everyone for being civil and friendly in the discussion. If this is still bubbling up at this time tomorrow then I may have to try splitting the thread again. As it is, I'll let things continue for now.

Ska'd, I agree with the majority of your post and I was not singling out LGBTQ+ or pride marches, they have had and are still having a difficult time to be heard ....... I was aiming my comments more generally at all the pressure groups that ram their cause down societies throat, Gordon Brown was a prime example, his view was the only view, if you disagreed with him you were racist or a bigot. I hate the way the St George's flag has been hijacked by the far right and that I am not allowed to be English, I have to be British. The Welsh, the Scots and the Northern Irish are allowed to be so but I can not.
I will say no more on this topic and allow this thread to be about its original subject matter other than to say Ska'd's post was well written, very fair and put his thoughts and views on the subject in a clear and concise way without being aggressive or patronising.

Josh, I've had my letter inviting me for my interview, haven't you had yours yet?
I turned it down as I don't want to be tainted when I get sacked for being third in the league  Whistle  Whistle  Whistle

I’ve actually already had three rounds of talks with the club. The first two went well but it all fell apart at the third when they finally asked me what my monetary expectations were. It seems my answer of £250 per week wage and £250,000 for transfers to cover four transfer windows was asking for too much.

Oh well. The Barcelona job might be available soon so I’ll try my luck there instead. Less pressure to succeed there. Whistle
