Former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard is on a shortlist to become the new manager of Rangers.

The 37-year-old, who is currently a Liverpool academy coach, has been highlighted as a possible replacement for Graeme Murty.

Replacing one rookie with another....even less experienced rookie. Its a bold appointment if it goes ahead, i'll give them that.

I have to say i think murty has been treated absolutely appallingly here. He's about the only character in the sevco saga where i have actually felt a bit of sympathy for.

Personally I think Gerrard would be a fool to even consider the Rangers position!!! He needs to stay at Liverpool for now and take the chance to learn in a place where he is revered and protected. Once he is ready for management he should look to take something lower down the English leagues or even try something abroad and build his reputation.

There is so little upside to the Rangers job at the moment, the clubs and fans expectations are so unrealistic, fully displayed today, and they need a manager that knows the club inside out and one that can effectively manage those expectations in a way the Board seem incapable or unwilling to do. Rangers can challenge for 2nd place and a Europa League spot, but they need to forget about Celtic for now and rebuild the club realistically. Rangers need to worry about Aberdeen and Hibs, not Celtic.

5 Live were likening his appointment to when John Barnes got theCeltic job. He's never managed a club since and so might not Gerrard.

You are right, but there is no chance of that happening. Their fans just won't accept that, they are off their nuts.

My feeling is gerrard will probably go for it, despite his stature as a player he is still only an u-18s coach and chances like that won't be coming around soon. The only other club to offer him a gig were milton keynes dons ffs Laugh........ but if he does he is taking a huge risk trusting that board and a lifelong criminal like dave king. He could be finishing his career off before it even gets started.

Jim, your last line is exactly why he shouldn’t go anywhere the job!!! He needs to learn at Liverpool and look for a League 1 or maybe Championship team to make the next step up.

Its not gerrard they need - it's Gandalf.

A combination of the consequences of their cheating and the idiocy of that organisation's MO have come home to roost finally, even though shamefully the Scottish footballing authorities refused to punish them properly. Hibs, motherwell and Kilmarnock have added much more to the scottish game this season than that gang from govan.

Brendan Rodgers 'stepping in' today and giving Murty a bit of support and credit as well as condemning Rangers for 'throwing him to the garbage' - no respect for the man, utterly discourteous! But that is Rangers FC 'in a nutshell'. They didn't even have the common courtesy to hold a post match interview and briefly congratulate Celtic on winning the league title again!

Graeme Murty quits Rangers with just three games left this season. It's understood he told the players his decision this morning.

Murty may not be jose mourinho but he stepped in to help that mob twice, and has been treated like a bag of shite as a result.

What a malignant, rancid organisation 'rangers' is. Stevie gerrard should be taking note.

I`m all for ex players of high calibre going into Management instead of sitting on TV and pretending they are Lobanovsky or Rinus Michaels in the tactical department

Yeah fine didn't work for Gary Neville or Alan Shearer among others but looking for the next English/British Managers to actually try, cough Frank Lampard, Owen Hargreaves

Murty has been treated shoddy, really turned it around and hope he gets another chance soon
