I guess I'm of the same generation as many of the posters on here, remembering seeing this raw talent's debut and knowing that we'd found a star. My abiding memory is of his league debut against Middlesboro. In those days my Villa supporting father used to take me to matches but I'd never seen him applaud an Albion goal....until Cyrille struck that afternoon. Such a pity that so many of his performances weren't captured on film, and how blessed are those of us who got to witness them in person.
Cyrille, thanks for the memories and rest in peace.
Zinman, I was at the Middlesboro game as well. I think he stunned us all into a few seconds shocked silence with his goal. I think we all knew then we had someone very special

Hark now hear the West Brom sing
A king is born today
His name is Cyrille Regis
And he's better than Andy Gray
RIP

I don't do twitter, but just saw a copy of a tweet (is that right?) from the Regis family on Cyrille's account, thanking everyone for their messages, and saying that they will read them all.
Is it worth messaging them to point them to the thread on our site? It's so full of wonderful, heartfelt messages and memories without exception; it'd be a shame if they didn't see it.

very very sad and at 59 far too young like many others here this was my era and my football heroes along with willie Joihnstone Asa Hartford John Osbourne derek statham tony and alistair brown and of course Laurie cunningham and Brendon Batson. This was the time I'll always remember and these the players i'll never forget and the era that being a WBA supporter made me the proudest. RIP Cyrille condolences to all his family and friends they are the people who have really lost a tremendous man and my thoughts go out to.

Val, a list of great names, a team I remember with deep affection, makes the loss of anyone of them harder to bear. As I said earlier Cryille was a great great man even without football he would be an inspiration but add his skill to that .... wow
But can I add another name to your list ...... Tony "God in goal" Godden.
Thanks for the memories Big C until we meet again.

Oh yes of course TG TBH theres a lot more names coming back to me now I think John Wile John Trewick Ally Robertson and not forgetting our Brian of course. The worst thing that happened was Big Ron taking some of our finest with him to Man U and I pretty much lost interest after that as we gradually declined into obscurity especially the 80's 90's and I set off to London in search of ventures musical and hung up my very very average boots and said goodbye to Mile Oak rovers in 85.

While I never like the thought of getting old, I am grateful to have been around to see those great players at a time when football came above everything else. While I've had some great days as an Albion fan since, I've never had "great seasons" like we had then, we were on the verge of being the best club in the country.
Man U in the league & cup, Leeds in the cup, Valencia, Forest, Liverpool - we brushed them all aside, Cyrille was and probably always will be part of my memories following the best side we've ever had and will more than likely ever have.
Players come and go from our club now and most of them are just there for the money, with a few exceptions, but Cyrille epitomised those years and those squads, they loved playing for the Albion almost as much as I enjoyed watching them, so while I'd love to be younger I wouldn't swap those fantastic years for anything

Did anyone see Brendon Batson's interview on Central News tonight ?
He held it together reasonably well until he was asked ......
"You were suppose to meeting Cyrille for the first time this Year wasnt you Brendon"
His heart sank and couldnt even muster a reply as the interviwer told him to take his time,
It was probably only 30 seconds or so he was silent on the verge of crying but it seemed liked a eternity,
Here's to the last of the three Degrees and good health Brendon
