Who remembers Gerry Howshall (mid 60s)?
Very underrated "wing-half". He was basically a squad player, but I never saw him have a bad game.
Don't know what happened to him.
What about N.Ireland International Danny Hegan.
We paid about £70k (not peanuts in them days) for Danny in 1969, and I saw him score a cracker at Crystal Palace from about 30 yds. But he was identical in style to The General (another H), though not as good. It seemed a luxury to me, especially as Bobby Hope was about 25 - unless Bobby was being chased by a Liverpool or Everton. (Bobby was the best of his kind at about that time, along with Johnny Giles).
Only a few years later I watched Solihull Borough v Coleshill Town, and Danny Hegan was playing for Coleshill. What a come down, as he could only be about 30, and he was a NI international a couple of years earlier.
