Smile This is the first reason to be optimistic for some time.

I think he is potentially far better than any assistant a manager has chosen for a long time. I know he hasn't got a lot to beat - especially with Morgan, but I think he could be good in terms of development, coaching and player knowledge. The only problem is being older and knowing more than his boss, but hopefully he's the kind of man who can make that work. After all he must know what he is taking on.

Now let's sign Zakuani who Northampton just released. His international commitments are just an opportunity for a cover player's development.

Oldham and Bury are interested in Gardner.

Well Bury did sign Pennant earlier in the season who has just been released.

I'm not surprised by Gardner. He has match-winning potential, but maybe suitors should envisage how often it is realised by looking at our league position over the last two seasons. If Bury start both him and Beckford there'll be occasions when they are kicking off with nine men. Luckily they have ditched Jacob Mellis. BUT they might look like world-beaters a couple of times.
