Additionally, if you look at it from a Scottish perspective Jim, Scotland contributes about £270M pa to the EU and the 'economic return' is approx £1.7 billion. Hence, I could never figure why so many opponents of Nicola Sturgeon have been 'giving her stick' from the Brexit declaration onwards apart from 'playing anti SNP politics'!! I'm assuming there's a similar proportionate 'return' for the rest of the UK but I've never heard any reference to what I regard as a highly relevant economic figure in that whole referendum debate instead of 'banging on' negatively about the immigration issues etc.

The British government is facing a fresh legal challenge over whether it should seek to retain membership of the single market after Brexit.


Lawyers will argue that June’s referendum asked the public a single question over whether the UK should leave the EU, and did not delve into the more complex issue of economic access.

It is the second legal challenge faced by the government over the process of leaving the EU. At the start of the month another challenge saw the high court rule that only parliament has the power to formally trigger Brexit. That case will be decided by the supreme court in an appeal to be heard next week.

The latest challenge will see lawyers argue that parliament should also have a say over whether the country could remain in the European Economic Area (EEA), in line with other non-EU countries, such as Norway.

If Theresa May ever thought she'd be given any kinda flexibility by the EU in the process of initiating Brexit, she was 'way off the mark', the same as that whining Tory Brexiteer, Iain Duncan Smith, who is clearly trying to take the 'moral high ground' re the position of working 'migrants'/ordinary people!! It was the 'vote to leave' that caused all the consternation in the first place Iain!! Merkel was never gonna be a 'soft touch' and May will find that out soon enough once she heeds the EU encouragement to initiate Article 50.

So boris is telling the Europeans that he is in favour of freedom of movement whilst davis is arguing for a position on strict immigration controls.



Davis though has at least finally admitted we are going to have to pay for access to the single market.
This is because he knows the UK economy is highly dependent on foreign investment mainly aimed at accessing the Customs Union and Single Market. Hugely so.

I think most free-thinking Scottish voters would naturally acknowledge that fact and that's why the Tories have never had any solid political foundation in Scotland whatsoever in decades n decades of enduring their political shenanigans that never change when they have been in power - all part of being in the Union huhhhh and against the wishes of the Scottish block vote!!
