Hibs v The Sons: Tues 26 April 2016
#11
Re a possible source of Hibs goals, we clearly know that Jason and Stokesy are our main hope to bang in a few goals tomorrow night but I'd hope that Stubbsy primes all the other guys who are capable of scoring for Hibs. Other players like John McGinn, Hendo, Boyly, Stevo, Fyvie 'fit the bill' but the onus is on the manager to set the attacking game plan and motivate these guys to try and score at every opportunity. The same initiative applies in the last quarter of this match and fielding high energy subs to keep up the pressure on the Sons' defence right up to the end of this game.

It will be interesting to see how Stubbs approaches the game and whether we will see a change in our often pedestrian style of attack. Will he go all out for goals or be happy just with a win? I'd certainly like to see Boyle on from the start playing wide right and not being dragged into a diamond midfield. He is the one player who has genuine pace and so we need to use it especially to get to the goal line and get crosses in. Trying to pass through defenses is fine if you have the quality of players to produce the final killer ball but all too often we huff and puff , have all the possession and create little. Defenders hate players with pace running at and hopefully by them so lets give Boyle a free reign down the right and see what comes of it. Dumbarton will be setting up to stifle our midfield and look to catch us on the break so we will need 100% concentration and hopefully some luck in front of goal and one never knows we might be able to cut a few off the goal difference with the Bairns.

Yep! Good comments! I'd also add that I wish both our wing backs would concentrate on kicking decent crosses into the opposition pen box rather than so many cross baws being whacked aimlessly with 'hope' attached to them and no real skill whatsoever!! Also their decision-making in such attacking positions has been predominantly wasteful! I think we're reasonable with free kicks and corners but both these criticisms are based on a season of watching these kinda failings particularly during matches that we should not have lost! I expect Stubbs' team formation to be a 3-5-2 at KO and 'go for it'. I'm looking at the current cold weather in Embro and you'd think the winter season has never left us! 26 April and it's still shit - ridiculous! Still, the players will get warmed up quickly enough if they are 'up for it'.

Just back from ER and we really should've won this match by more goals. Why we keep missing 'open goals', with no goalie to bother about, really is beyond me. Stokesy and Gunnarson failed in that category of missed goal opp! In Stokes' case, a low cross to the back post, about 3 ft from the Sons' goal line, and he mishits the f###### baw instead of rolling it in to an empty net!!! Doh  He put in a good shift tonight and scored the 4th goal but it was a tap in on their goal line. Hibs 1st goal was a cracking early strike by our hat trick hero (unsure re that 3rd goal - thought it was more of a OG!), James Keatings, and we've gone 2-0 up within about 12 mins - a perfect start to the game. IMO if Hendo had played well in the 1st half we would've been at least 4-0 up by HT. He was mince but improved a bit in the second half. The Sons' goalie was the MOTM IMO with a string of stunning saves to deny Hibs and Stevo had a cracking 25 yard strike that cannoned off his LH post. Jason on the subs' bench and no subs used tonight by Stubbsy. I'll take the 4-0 result as well but we had a chance to score another 2-3 goals. Stubbs not too bothered and I wonder what team he'll field v managerless QOS?

Stokes and hendo both missed sitters but there ye go. Stokes was very good on the night and as pointed out before keatings can be effective if used properly.

That late collapse to Falkirk is going to prove costly i fear.
