Chris Brunt laid into West Brom team-mates and questioned Alan Pardew's tactics in dressing room row
By Matt Wilson | West Bromwich Albion | Published: 5 hours ago | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

A furious Chris Brunt laid into team-mates and had a heated argument with under-pressure Albion boss Alan Pardew after Saturday's dismal defeat to Huddersfield Town.

The long-serving Northern Irishman, who was Albion's best performer despite coming off the bench in the second half, stormed into the dressing room after staying out on the pitch to clap the home fans.

He then proceeded to demand better from some of his underperforming team-mates before rounding on Pardew and questioning his tactics.

It's believed Brunt disagreed with his head coach's decision to stick with his favoured 4-4-2 system against Huddersfield's five-man midfield.

Brunt was left out of the starting line-up following James McClean's man of the match performance against Southampton a week previously, but he set up Craig Dawson's goal seven minutes after coming on.

He has now set up four of Albion's last six goals in the league, and Pardew's decision to leave him out of the team did not go down well with fans.

Supporters cheered when Brunt was brought on in the second half, and the 33-year-old was one of few in blue and white who came away from this dreadful game with his reputation intact.

At times in the second half he was visibly annoyed when in possession, throwing his hands up and demanding someone in front of him make a run.

His exclusion wasn't the only selection decision that drew criticism from the fans.

Supporters also booed Gareth Barry off the pitch and sarcastically cheered when he was substituted following a pedestrian performance from the newly-turned 37-year-old.

There was also a smattering of boos for winger Matt Phillips when he was replaced by Oliver Burke.

When Pardew was asked about the reaction to his team selection, he said: "I think that's just frustration and I don't think we should make this an individual thing.

"This is team thing and regardless of my selection, the team didn't win against Huddersfield at home, so I don't think they're going to be best pleased about any sort of decision.

"We have to accept that and move on, and that's what we'll do. We just have to go to the next week and hopefully get ourselves a win.”

Great to see - a player ...and one of OURS .....having the passion and the b*lls to have a go like this.

Probably be out of the squad next week!

Have always liked Brunty and he just seems to get better, in all ways.
If all the other players had half of his spirit we wouldn't be in the mess we're now in

Good on Chris Brunt for doing this. Someone needs to tell the other players who are not performing and the coaching staff to get their act together. You would think that Jonny Evans as captain would do it but obviously not. I doubt Alan Pardew will drop him from the squad next week because he needs Brunt in the 18 but it wouldn't surprise me if Brunt's on the bench again. I would personally put him in at left back and drop Gibbs.

I think Brunt must be kept for next season's Championship campaign. I don't think he offers enough in midfield as a left winger anymore (a left winger needs more than great crossing and set-piece delivery) but I would like to see him as first choice left back. His wicked crosses from deep and quality at set-pieces will be very important as well as his ability to defend properly (unless he's against pure pace). I would also like to see him as vice-captain, possibly even captain (I still prefer Dawson) when Evans leaves.

It's so important when you bring in players to a club they deliver on effort and ability compared with what they are they are paid. This we have done quite well during our PL tenure which is now soon to end. Over-discipline under Pulis has been replaced by no discipline under Pardew. Now the die is cast. Several players - Evans, Livermore, Barry and Krychoviak especially, are going through the motions. They don't care about this club any more, if they ever did. Brunt is trying to do what Pardew should be doing and trying to get them out of this mindset.

Seeing the hapless performance on Saturday we are deservedly going down. Now we need to plan for the championship. We will lose some, if not all, of the above. They will not be missed. We might get something for Rondon who tried as hard as anyone on Saturday but has never looked like the prolific scorer we need. McLean has probably come to the end of his useful life with us. Time will tell if Leko can step up to the plate. Jury is still out with Burke. We need maybe to take a leaf from Villa's book and find a young battle-hardened manager from a successful club in the lower leagues and make good use of the parachute money to rebuild the club with young, hungry players who want to make a name for themselves. Under no circumstances, do I want Pardew.

Such a shame. We started the season with many of thought was a decent side. We made a good start, without players like Evans and Krychoviak if my memory serves me well. Since then, zilch. We have been mismanaged to relegation and it's back to square one.

We need to find a new Chris Brunt, better still, 11 of them.

Sportsmail can disclose that Claudio Yacob joined Brunt in criticising Pardew after the manager had defended his selections, before assistant John Carver backed up his colleague and acted as peacemaker.

Pardew revealed on Friday that Brunt had seen him this week to apologise over his 'outburst' and insisted such fierce dialogue was a positive indication the team are determined to pull off a miraculous escape from relegation.

But it is believed that Pardew, who plans changes at Watford on Saturday, faces a difficult task in convincing players to buy into his methods. It is thought Pardew's occasionally pointed criticism of younger players has gone down badly with some seasoned professionals.

West Brom owner Guochuan Lai and chief executive Mark Jenkins held a review of Pardew's position following the Huddersfield result and another defeat will in all likelihood see the 56-year-old dismissed.

Pardew still believes West Brom, seven points from safety, can secure survival and attempted to draw a line under the dressing room episode.

How he can leave Brunt on the bench for McClean is totally beyond me.

I really can't understand why Brunty criticised Pardew's selections and tactics??????? They are so obviously working, one win in fourteen, seven points adrift, ten games left ..... our problems are mainly Pulis related but Pardew has failed to rectify the indoctrination and lift the team ......

There's only one - " CHRISSY BRUNT BRUNT BRUNT ...... CHRISSY BRUNT BRUNT BRUNT"
