Huddersfield Town v Hull City

John Smiths Stadium Tues 15th March 19:00 kick off

Town tonight entertain Hull City at the John Smiths Stadium in the U21 Premier League Cup semi final. Both these teams are Academy Catergory 2 teams and are playing for a place in the final which will be against either West Ham or Liverpool who play each other tomorrow night and both who are Academy Catergory 1 clubs. Incidentally the final will be played over 2 legs and it's my understanding that they will be live on BT Sport

I can't tell you a single thing about Hull U21s but given that the 1st team have a home game tonight I'd doubt they'd use the over age rule to its maximum this evening (1GK and 3 outfield)
Town will no doubt be using the same squad of players that have got us this far, I'm expecting big Phil Billing to get a run out having just served a 3 match ban for his MK Dons sending off.

Route to the Semi Final(opposing team academy status)

2nd Qualifying Round
Town 1 v 0 Forest (2)

Round of 32
Hull 2 v 1 Crewe (2)
Town 2 v 1 Middlesboro (1)

Southampton (1) 0 v 2 Town
Southampton were the cup winners last season

Sadly the U21s were very poor. I know it's only one game but on that performance none of them are anywhere near good enough to challenge for a first team spot.
Our most competent player by a country mile was the goalkeeper who dug his team out of a hole on 4-5 occasions and had Hull been any good at finishing we would have had no need for extra time.nthats not to say we didn't have chances, we did. We came close at several corners but failed to get headers on target all bar one that was cleared off the line in the second half of normal time and we had a couple of decent shots but the Hull keeper was easily up to the test.

Flo Bojaj started well, held the ball up and then faded badly. Pyke came on in the second half to play his position up top and looked a far better player. Bojaj was moved to play in the number 10 role just behind and I don't know if he was tired but he just looked disinterested and lazy.
Defence looked shakey hence the reason our keeper kept us in it, dallying on the ball and stray passes putting us under pressure without the need to be...mainly our central defenders. Although to be fair they won a fair amount of ball in the air and put in some decent tackles.
Midfield, Holmes seemed to be playing at the back of midfield in a holding role and in the first half he would try a World Cup style pass to create things or a jinxing run but we just didn't have anything once we got forward and so it would come back again. Charles, one or two nice touches but again for me not enough.

Like I say, it's disappointing and hopefully they learned a little bit more about the game to push them on to be better players.

That's a disappointing assessment of the players then, Wakey. Especially the defence. Sad
