Rest in Peace Don Howe

A great player, a great coach and was a good servant to West Bromwich Albion, Arsenal and his country.
Condolences to the Howe family and a thank you Don for what you gave to football.

Angel

The disconcerting thing is that I remember as a lad watching his silky skills.
Wish we had a right back of his quality today.

I also remember watching Don Howe, Baggieman. He took a mean penalty.

West Bromwich Albion has paid tribute to former player and manager Don Howe, who has died aged 80.

Born in Wolverhampton, Howe made well over 300 appearances for Albion as a player before returning to the club as a manager in 1971.

A statement on the club's website said: "It is with great sadness that West Bromwich Albion today announce the death of legendary right-back and one-time manager Don Howe, aged 80.

"Local lad Howe made 379 appearances for the Club, scoring 19 times, during a 14-year spell at The Hawthorns.

"He also played for Arsenal and won 23 caps for England.

"Having helped Arsenal to the League and Cup double as a coach in 1971, Howe returned to Albion as manager, where he spent four years.

"In 2004, he was named as one of West Bromwich Albion's 16 greatest players, in a poll organised as part of the Club's 125th anniversary celebrations."

West Brom players will wear black armbands for the games against Swansea on Boxing Day and Newcastle on December 28 as a mark of respect.

Howe joined Albion's youth team as a 15-year-old in 1950.

He turned professional two years later, but did not make his debut until 1955, in a match against Everton.

Howe went on to become a mainstay in the team before leaving for the Gunners, the only other club he played for, in 1964.

Signed by decorated former Wolves skipper Billy Wright, Howe progressed to the role of captain but his playing career effectively ended after suffering a broken playing against Blackpool in March 1966.

Howe stayed on at Arsenal and was first team coach when the Gunners won the double in 1971.

Months later he returned to the Hawthorns and spent a further four years as Baggies boss.

Howe stayed in the game until the 1990s and was assistant to Terry Venables when England reached the Euro 96 semi-finals

A peerless full back who rarely if ever made a full bloodied tackle.

His skill was that he jockeyed his opponent until suddenly as if by magic he was in possession of the ball.
Statistics probably don't exist to prove it but I warrant that he hardly ever made a bad tackle and I would be surprised if he ever got booked much less sent off.

My condolences to his family on their sad loss.

RIP Don a club legend as a player and a hugely respected coach throughout the country. He was way before my time but was an excellent defender from what I've read.

The first name on my all-time Albion XI. We've never had another Right-back to compare with him. Nor have England.
