With the outstanding performances this season of that "over the hill" striker, Jermaine Defoe, including a key goal today at Sid James Park, it brought to mind our decision a few years ago not to offer a two year contract to Kevin Phillips when we promoted under Tony Mowbray. He must have been a similar age to Defoe is now so age is clearly no barrier. I know that there were some concerns over his long term fitness, primarily his knees, but don't tell me that Defoe, as excellent as he is, is/was a better natural finisher than Kev. One of our biggest issues that season was an inability to convert the limited chances that came our way. What we needed was a natural, instinctive goal scorer, if only we'd had one.......oh, hang on!

I remember at the time my saying to retain him as a forward coach/occasional player, but people on here poo-pood the suggestion, though he went on to score valuable goals. Have no idea what happened to him though Baggie Steve.

Also Defoe' strike rate is one of the best in the Prem, as is Long's who we also got rid of.

BBB, Shane Long, that's a whole other discussion, suffice to say that it's hard to believe we could not  tried harder to keep him

the signing of Lambert has surely proved that without pace in Premier League you are screwed.

Unfortunately the old 606 has closed down to prove this. But you are right a lot of people thought he ought to have been treated more fairly - especially me.   Where is he now?

Not sure Phillips ever relied on pace; more intelligence to be in the right place when the ball arrived. More than half a goal game for us. Great player.

Of course he'd be no use now.....forward thinking no use when the ball is launched (roughly) in your direction from 50 yards away.

Agree with RTES that Phillips relied upon natural instinct rather than pace but, his ratio of goals to shots must have been very impressive.

I last saw him at a game at the Liberty Stadium when, having left us, he was playing for the Blues.

Swansea were winning the game and he was brought on as a late substitute with about 10 maybe 15 minutes to go.
In that short period he scored twice and the Blues stole the 3 points.

I don't see why we could not have kept him for another season or two as an impact sub.
As I recall his knees would no longer stand up to a full 90 minutes play but, I still feel that he had a part to play for us in that role.

Seem to remember seeing him sat among the coaches and players at Derby in a midweek interview on Central news wearing a Derby crested sweatshirt and trackies, so he may be coaching at Derby?
