What did you think - silverbaggie - 10-12-2014 What did you think about the sending off in last night's game between Liverpool and Basle? Nor surprisingly, many Liverpool fans are up in arms about the decision; some claiming that it was the reason they didn't win that important match and hence make progress to the knock out stage of the European Cup. Personally, I feel that whether contact or not actually occurred, the intent to foul the Basle player was clearly there. If anyone has ever been poked in the eye, they would know just how painful it can be. And, in any case, why did the Liverpool player reach behind him to fend off his opponent. He already had the ball and was being chased but not fouled by the Basle player. The reaction of Brendan Rodgers is IMO totally wrong. The INTENT was there to foul and/or hurt his opponent. In addition Liverpool never looked like winning the game even when they had eleven players on the pitch. My respect for that once great Club has all but evaporated. They concentrate on wrongs done or imagined done to the club and conveniently ignore their own faults. Hillsboro is always being quoted as a disaster (which it was) but, I never hear Liverpool supporters referring to the events in 1985 at the Heysel Stadium which also led to the loss of life of over thirty Juventus fans. Rant over!! RE: What did you think - devwakey - 10-12-2014 I think if that's even a yellow card its a shocking decision! The game is too soft these days. People talk about the National team struggling and i my opinion it's because people are wanting to watch everyone play like Spain & Brazil. English football has always been about getting stuck in and passion. But nowadays you cant go in hard for a tackle, 50/50s are looked at as a "career threatening situation" The sport annoys me so much for its softness!! Watching early rounds of the FA Cup made me appreciate the game again, with refs allowing tackles and physicality! IF last night was a sending off then they may as well make the sport a non contact. Intent/not intent! it was a stray bloody finger!!! RE: What did you think - Bournemouth Baggie - 10-12-2014 He knew the rules and yet he broke them. Liverpool's failure to progress is more about their inept performances in the CL League before last night than one incidence of stupidity. No Suarez = no hope RE: What did you think - St Charles Owl - 10-12-2014 Didn't see the sending off so won't comment on that particular one, but refs have been clamping down on arms and hands in opponents faces for a while now so its probably not that unexpected. As regards Liverpool, they lost that game before that incident so while it made it tougher for them, it wasn't the sole reason they went out. Liverpool were lways going to struggle to replace Suarez but losing Sturridge as well was the real hammer blow!! Last seaason was a blip for me with them, they are not top 4 quality at the moment and I am not convinced that Rogers is up to the task!! RE: What did you think - tidy - 11-12-2014 Marcovic's attempt at a smacking an opponent fell well short.....pretty much like Liverpool's CL campaign. RE: What did you think - Slick_Footwork - 11-12-2014 I think he was unfortunate to get sent off because of the lack of contact. However, he looked at the opponent twice which suggests that he did intend to strike him / fend him off. Because of that, the referee is well within his rights to show the red. So, while it was soft, if I was a Liverpool fan, I would blame the player rather than the referee. I firmly believe that every player should avoid situations which give the referee the opportunity to send them off. In this case, while the hand might not of been as dangerous as an elbow, any contact above head height gives the referee that opportunity. RE: What did you think - talkSAFT - 11-12-2014 Rodgers should be giving the bloke (who looked really good when he came on) a severe kick up the arse, instead of complaining about the decision. It doesn't matter whether the Basle player feigned injury to his eye; the fact is that the intention was to hit him in the face, and he just could have blinded him. Whatever happened to the football equivalent of "brotherhood of man"? I just don't understand the mentality these days. Do players have a good laugh after the match if they've broken a player's leg? Do the Vinnies Joneses and Fash the Bash say "Yeh - I finished at least 4 players' careers, me. Soft bastards!" |
