Greatest Singing voices - Blue Baggie - 31-05-2020 As the D.I.D. uptake was well received - I thought I'd try this one while the footy is quiet. Not necessary the best artists but IMO the best voices. Here's my starter for 10 Mine are all females ! 1. Karen Carpenter 2. Katherine Jenkins 3. Whitney Houston 4. Adele 5. Amy Winehouse 6. Diana Ross 7. Nicole Scherzinger 8. Steve Nicks 9. Charlotte Church 10. Elaine Paige. RE: Greatest Singing voices - Blue Baggie - 31-05-2020 Mrs BB nominee's 1. Leona Lewis 2. Andrew Bocelli 3. Alfie Boe 4. Whitney Houston 5. Nat King Cole 6. Freddie Mercury 7. Charlotte Church 8. Michael Jackson 9. Mariah Carey 10. Cilla Black RE: Greatest Singing voices - Baggievicar - 31-05-2020 Even I can't get Bob Dylan into this list. Nor can I put these into order. Paul Simon Emma Kirkby Ted Hawkins John Lennon Dinah Washington Hugh Masekela John Martyn Lucinda Williams Nancy Griffith Ugg the Cave-Dweller But it will (almost) all change again by tomorrow... RE: Greatest Singing voices - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 31-05-2020 Picking Paul Simon over Art Garfunkel is an interesting move, to say the least. Don't think I can muster a full ten, as I've always tended to rate writing ability over singing voice, but a few who've been overlooked: Kate Bush Kurt Cobain Lauren Mayberry Tom Waits Kirsty MacColl RE: Greatest Singing voices - drewks - 31-05-2020 Whow - IMPOSSIBLE!! A few absolute giants (IMHO!) missing from the lists so far: Carly Simon Karen Carpenter Etta James Otis Redding RE: Greatest Singing voices - Baggievicar - 31-05-2020 Yes, I wondered about Simon vs Garfunkel. Art is quite ethereal but I just thought Paul has got more variety, and his voice can sound just as pure when he bothers. I'm probably swayed by the song-writing, though. I think I need to swap Marvin Gaye for one of those anyway. Ugg may be in danger. RE: Greatest Singing voices - silverbaggie - 01-06-2020 Mainly female and in no particular order:- 1) Annie Haslam 2) Cara Dillon 3) Eva Cassidy 4) Karen Carpenter 5) Judith Durham 6) Stevie Nicks and for the boys:- 7) Elvis 8) Bryn Terfel 9) The Everly Bros 10) Ricky Nelson RE: Greatest Singing voices - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 01-06-2020 (31-05-2020, 21:43)Baggievicar Wrote: Art is quite ethereal but I just thought Paul has got more variety, and his voice can sound just as pure when he bothers. It's not so much about purity as sheer vocal range. There's a reason why Art sings Bridge Over Troubled Water; if you hear Paul doing it solo, he avoids all the soaring high notes that make the song. Brilliant songwriter (the fact he could afford to throw away an incredible protest song like A Church Is Burning in the 1960s, in favour of stronger material, is astonishing in itself); but other singers often do his work more justice. If it does change tomorrow ...hope Ted Hawkins stays there. Thanks for reminding me of this fella... RE: Greatest Singing voices - wba13 - 03-06-2020 Listen to a lot of music but have not ever heard a singer with a better range of voice than David Draiman . |
