WBA vs Newcastle - FA Cup Fifth Round Match Thread - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 27-02-2020 Like a disgraced Royal being hurriedly ushered away for an impromptu "period of reflection" somewhere in the nether regions of Windsor Castle, the glory days of the FA Cup feel an eternity ago as the fifth round is relegated for the first time to a floodlit midweek berth, stripped of replays. Nevertheless, any competition that Albion have a remote chance of winning is still alright by me, and having limped our way to the last sixteen in 2016 and 2018 only to surrender meekly on both occasions, this is the first time in half a decade that it's genuinely felt as if Albion have a good thing going in the FA Cup. A place in the quarter-finals will be the reward if only we can see off Tuesday night's visitors, Newcastle United. Having already breezed past West Ham in the previous round, another Premier League opponent in iffy form should be no cause for alarm at the Hawthorns. At the time of writing, the Magpies have won just one league match since Christmas, and only scraped through the previous rounds against lower league sides with the aid of a replay (which, of course, is no longer an option). Defensive frailties have been their undoing time and again, while goals are as hard to find as an honest statement from Mike Ashley. The greatest concern for Albion, in fact, is how seriously the respective managers choose to take this match, as Bilic will undoubtedly view promotion as the number one priority, while Steve Bruce - currently cushioned from relegation by some seven points - may view a successful cup-run as the best chance of saving his job. I do hope we can give this cup tie our full attention, not least because promotion is increasingly looking a prospect of "when" rather than "if". Our last FA Cup encounter with Newcastle happened ten years ago, during our last promotion campaign under Roberto Di Matteo, and ended in a convincing 4-2 win for the Baggies; an excellent omen for Tuesday night, if only we're prepared to keep this ball rolling. RE: WBA vs Newcastle - FA Cup Fifth Round Match Thread - talkSAFT - 27-02-2020 Who remembers the 5th Round in 1974? (Newcastle 0-3). It was a huge game back then, but the defeat knocked the stuffing out of our Promotion charge. We were well and truly stuffed that day due to Supermac(donald), Hibbitt, and a bloke called Jimmy Smith who ran us ragged in midfield, if you remember. (Funny remembering an opponent's performance 46 years later!) The Cup doesn't have the same magic these days, and Tuesday night shit-or bust ties show just how much the Football Authorities care about the competition. (When I was about 10 I knew all the Cup Final winners - and opponents - since 1872. Now I couldn't tell you who won it in 2019!) RE: WBA vs Newcastle - FA Cup Fifth Round Match Thread - Northwalesbaggie - 27-02-2020 What would you rather have? a) Promotion to the Greed League or b) A good FA Cup run?. IMHO we cannot have both. Yes we have a decent Squad but Playing 6 or 7 games in just over a month must take it's toll on the players. Play some of the youngsters i say... good for them ( hopefully). COYB. COYB. I don't think it's either/or. We're nine points clear of trouble, there's an international break at the end of March, and because the final is well past the end of the Championship season, a cup run would only potentially lead to two postponements in our schedule. Should probably also mention that this match will be broadcast live by the BBC on Red Button and via the BBC Sport website. (Funny remembering an opponent's performance 46 years later!) I remember it well, Talksaft. I was at uni in Liverpool and, in an earlier round, we’d drawn at Everton and then won the replay at the Hawthorns. I went to both games and we’d played well so I went to the Newcastle game full of optimism. You’re right, though, they played us off the park and 3-0 didn’t flatter them. Still, we were just starting on an upward path and the golden period of Giles, Allen and Atkinson ![]() RE: WBA vs Newcastle - FA Cup Fifth Round Match Thread - talkSAFT - 28-02-2020 (28-02-2020, 10:24)BaggieSteve Wrote: I remember it well, Talksaft.
