Huddersfield Town supporter left "sad, angry and ashamed" at behaviour of some fellow fans on journey to Bolton Wanderers

A football fan has called for action to curb yobbish behaviour among Huddersfield Town’s travelling fans.
The supporter, who has followed the John Smith’s Stadium club for more than 40 years, said he was “appalled” by the behaviour and language of the group travelling to Saturday’s game at Bolton Wanderers.
And he has called on police, Huddersfield Town and the football authorities to do more to stamp out the problems of soccer hooligans.
Several fans were ejected from the Town end following at the game, which Bolton won 1-0, and a flare was set off inside the stadium.
But the bulk of the complaints relate to large groups travelling to the match by train. British Transport Police had calls to to stations in Manchester and Bolton to contain them.
The Huddersfield fan, who did not want to be named, has spoken to Town chief executive Nigel Clibbens about his concerns.
He said: “For over 40 years I have followed Huddersfield Town and on Saturday I took the trip to Bolton Wanderers. As well as it being a rare away trip, what was also unusual was that I travelled by train. This was in order that I could meet up more easily with a friend. I left my house with a feeling of great excitement and anticipation.
“During the outward and return journeys, and due to various problems with the trains, we actively experienced the stations of Huddersfield, Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Oxford Road, and Horwich Parkway. We encountered supporters of Manchester United, Hull City, Preston North End and, indeed, Bolton Wanderers. Not once from any of these supporters did we see any incidents, and nor did we experience a single moment of aggression or concerning behaviour.
“I am, however, sad, angry and ashamed to report that what we witnessed along these stop-off points from various ‘groups’ linked with Huddersfield Town was the complete opposite. I absolutely refuse to call them supporters. I am not going to detail individual incidents, but suffice to say that the whole episode was shameful.
“These groups were aggressive, foul-mouthed, insulting and downright frightening for any normal rail passenger, or indeed any normal citizen. Where they were present, the police did a superb job in very difficult circumstances and helped to remove the fear of any incident escalating.
“No-one dared ask these groups to modify their behaviour as they had already calculated the possible consequences. But what is equally hurtful is that these groups align themselves to the family club that is Huddersfield Town and, in doing so, bring us all into disrepute by association.
“The police tactic was clearly one of containment and, thus, many of the individuals involved effectively “got away” with their shameful behaviour. They, quite literally, live to fight another day totally oblivious, and uncaring, as to the impact they may have had on others. For them, their twisted world carries on and they simply wait for the next game, or other similar opportunity, to showcase their immoral behaviour.
“I, for one, will never again be taking public transport to an away game and I implore the hierarchy within the police and the senior management of Huddersfield Town to seek out these obnoxious individuals.
“They bring shame on society, the town of Huddersfield and Huddersfield Town”.

The bloke sounds like a cretin to be fair. Not defending idiots as we do have our fair share but this bloke clearly doesn't get to many away games & is judging based on one incident, I get the train all over the place & haven't had any problems at all with other Town fans

I can't comment on his experience as i wasn't there, but my impression is very much like that of Cas except, I would say, at (most recently) Old Trafford and some of the closer games to Huddersfield. Bolton isn't far, so I can well imagine some idiots travelling as well as the usual boisterousness of away fans (who will have had a field day meeting all those other fans).

Despite the problems at Horwich Parkway station we had no problems on the trains I was on, spoke to a few Hull fans on the way back and everyone got on well.

2 points- firstly I get the impression this chap travels with the TravelClub as a general rule, a place where anything other than a flask of coffee and a round of sandwiches is frowned upon.
Secondly- he left the house with a feeling of great excitement and anticipation.....which team has he been watching this season

I'd like to know what time this guy set off if he came across the PNE fans? Preston were at Yeovil, this gives his account absolutely no credibility whatsoever. I was round Manchester before the game and it was ok, got the train at Oxford Road, there were a few Town fans on, quite boisterous, obviously had a few light ales but nothing I would claim to be on the level this guy is on about. Sensationalist nonsense.

Majority of the time town fans don't cause trouble but it always tends to be the big london games where the cretins turn up. Getting so half-cut they can't stand and causing trouble. I sympathise with this guy, usually our away followings are tremendous but it's a shame when a select few act like yobs that ruin it for the rest of us.
