Scottish Cup: Dundee United v Hibs, Sun 19 Jan, KO 3.00pm - 0762 - 08-01-2020

Well this is a "huge match" for Hibs v testy Championship opponents and I view this game as being 90 mins away from Hibs footie season being almost ended in terms of any real further interest in the Scottish Premiership as we are now too far away from 4th place, a consequence of Heckingbottom's awful management of the 1st team activities. I watched United's recent derby match v Dundee and came to the conclusion that Hibs can definitely beat the Tangerines but we are so "hot n cold" in our matches that one doesn't know what Hibs team is gonna "show up" at Tannadice. It is a Scottish Cup tie attracting a huge Hibs away support to Tannadice. Therefore I expect Jack Ross to field an attacking Hibs team that will go all out to win this cup tie in the true tradition of Hibs sides of the past. Also I wanna see a solid defence for a change! Rocky in goal , Naismith or Gray at RB and the ever faithful Stevo at LB. The current CBs to use are Hanlon and Magregor but I'd personally bring in Ryan Porteous to play in an "anchor" role in front of Hibs defence. Let him "battle" that area in a defensive mid capacity. Hibs midfield is where this game is gonna be won or lost. Hence Scott Allan should start in a forward role with Stevie Mallan omitted. Slivka to slot in to back up Allan and the pace of Boyly and Horgan hopefully can run amok!!! The CF position is definitely a crucial call for the manager and all I can say is "good luck re that decision" unless Mark McNulty is a surprise Hibs signing by then!! C'mon Hibs!

Rumour going around that Lennon wants to sign Martin Boyle

United's Nicky Clark out for the season. So Lawrence Shankland is the DU player who Hibs defenders must keep a "close eye on".

Stevie Mallan now out for about two months after a knee op but I think we are well covered for that loss.

Just back from that 2-2 draw at Tannadice and before I even comment on the match, I must say the pre-match debate was really "buzzing" regarding Jack Ross fielding Whittaker in Hibs midfield because Slivka was carrying an injury!!?? Another Hibs manager decided to field Whittaker in a mid position and effectively "waste" that position!!!! Thumb down Even worse happened in the fact that mis-passing and slow Whittaker short-passed Porteous in the 2nd half and effectively slipped him a "suicide pass" - end result - Porteous badly injured and it looks very bad for him. We can only await the medical diagnosis in hope together with Naismith's knee injury as well!! Then Whittaker "done" in Hibs midfield to let the guy easily pass him and concede United's equalising second goal from about 30 yards!! What a f###### gaffe Ross made and I'm surprised that no other Hibs coaching staff tried to warn him and tell him what most savvy Hibs fans already know - IT DISNAE WORK!!! As for Boyly? Our stand out player in setting up Doidge's goal and scoring a cracker of a second Hibs goal from 25 yards. Kamberi put in a shift but some of his decision-making is still questionable. As for Scott Allan? What an enigma this lad is - not quite as bad as Whittaker but his hot n cold contribution to this match was so frustrating to watch. Thankfully we didn't lose this match and so many scoring opps created but this was still IMO a poor display v an average side with definitely the wrong Hibs starting line up. My suggestion in my OP that Porteous should be played in an "anchor role" should've been heeded and, had JR done that, I believe Porteous would not be facing another long period out injured again. The manager fielded a totally unbalanced mid formation and should rightly be "slammed" for that act of folly!! As for that United's 1st goal 30 secs before the HT whistle??????? I wanna look at the video recording of that avoidable goal and see how Whittaker and Allan fared in this farce - it looked like a number of Hibs players were absolutely "sleeping" in allowing United's move to create Shankland's well taken goal - a huge lack of awareness, commitment and control of a match just secs before HT!!

Thought it was a good tie, both teams trying to win it. I think we will beat them in the replay. The enforced injuries didn't do us any favours at all.

Allan is such a gifted wee player but he tends to overdo it at times, just keep it simple. Whittaker did ok when he came on and kamberi had one of his better games. Boyle was by far the best player on the park though...by some distance. No way should we be selling him in January.

We really should have put them away, we made them look pretty average for good periods of the game. We just give away too many cheap goals - it needs nipped in the bud.

Walking away from Tannadice last night, my conversation centred on a previous Hibs midfield "benchmark" called John McGinn and comparing the poor mid displays from the guys who played in that cup tie when Hibs really should've won it anyway!!! There was one sweeping move from Boyly when he "passed in" Halberg and seriously, his shot on the United goal was a joke! The score was 0-1 and 0-2 would've put Hibs in a good comfort zone to start playing with a bit of style. Hallberg couldn't do it and looks incapable of scoring from that kinda position. I've got more strength in my right toe than Hallberg appears to have in his right foot and my shot from that position would've "screamed" past that United goalie to make it 0-2!!! Do I sound like I'm unimpressed? Yep, I'm not impressed and now realise that we need more players in to bolster this player squad before the Jan transfer window closes!!
