Chicken's coming home to roost for the French and Italians, for years they have waved these unfortunate souls through their border controls hoping we will do the decent and accept the illegals. However as we are not allowing them in they appear to blame us.
Always thought that to claim asylum you claimed it in the first country you landed in not the last. Desperately sad plight for many wanting a better life but it's for the French to deal with and not us.

Yes, that's true, it is supposed to be the first safe country yet many pass through 10+ to get to us. It does imply it is economic asylum rather than political.
