Hard work! - SaltergateBorn - 22-04-2019

God, we made hard work of that! We should have been 2 up in the first 15 minutes (I thought Scott Boden could score goals!) and about 4 up in the first half-hour.

I`m tempted to say that Boreham Wood were mediocre, but I think that would be doing a bit of an injustice to mediocrity. Until they got that free-kick, I was seriously wondering whether they would manage a shot on target in the whole match; and they end up scoring 2 bloody goals! (What sort of wall was that, by the way? I could tell exactly where he was going to put it about 10 seconds before he took it.) To be honest, they reminded me a lot of us before Christmas.

I don`t know what went on with the red card and the kerfuffle in their penalty area; I was sitting in the East Stand and didn`t get a clear view of either, but I don`t think the card had any material impact on the result. I think the score was misleading, but the result was fair.

That`s the first time I`ve been up for a couple of months and it`s obvious we carry far more of a threat up front than we did. Boden was playing quite close to Denton and the midfield was getting up there as well, so we always seemed to have a goal or two in us. Chapman had a good game – when they occasionally deigned to give him the ball, that is - and we really should have made more of some of his crosses.

Anyway, that`s it for this season for me. I`m switching to cricket mode now and, weather permitting, plan to be at Grace Road on Wednesday to put the mokkers on Derbyshire. Work to be done in the close season for Messrs Sheridan and Snodin, no doubt about that, but things are definitely looking a lot more positive than they were at Christmas.

I was encouraged that successful loan periods encouraged Sheridan to hope he can find a way to keep Chapman and Yarney. And I was frankly amazed that he has offered young Charlie Wakefield a contract extension on the grounds that he can make him a better player. Wow, we actually want to improve someone. I'm sure he COULD help him!

Boreham Wood stand as an example of the difference a few team changes can make. Last season they were a serious side, but in the close season they lost the best keeper in the league and two of the best forwards and their star full-back Kane Smith was so badly injured in last season's play-offs he is still to make it back. Due to modest resources they went from challengers to challenged under a good young manager. Let's hope we're moving in the opposite direction.

I notice Dagenham are already promising to throw money at a promotion bid next season to bring in new players. Judging by Monday's result at Braintree this hasn't gone down a belter with the current crop. Orient now have the Championship almost pocketed. That means there may be some disappointed teams starting out next season. If Solihull don't win the play-offs I imagine their manager Tim Flowers will be snapped up for the EFL. If Salford don't win the play-offs they'll be sacking their manager and splashing quite a lot of cash for next season. If Fylde don't make it up they'll improve again next season and keep plugging away and Harrogate's reaction will be down to the manager's father-in-law, who is the money behind their success. If Notts County and/or Yeovil come down they'll want to go back up and will be making changes over the summer. And down at Torquay, cynical as it sounds, their hopes lie with Lee Johnson keeping his job at Bristol City and providing some judicious loans ........ but there is an appetite for more success down there, more than 5,000 turned up to celebrate their Championship win at their match at home to Hungerford.

Sheri and Snodin do need to build on what they've started. I'd grab Alex Brown from Buxton, Tyler French from Sudbury impressed Barnsley on a trial period and Charlton are looking at him now ....... if neither dive in maybe we should. And Emmanuel Sonupe has finally been getting a chance at Stevenage and has scored recently, if they're releasing I'd be grabbing.

And here's a question from Monday, why did Boreham Wood play their reserve keeper and leave Ryan Huddart the current England C keeper on the bench? He's young and if we are building for the future ..... he fits the profile.

But is cricket now anything like the game I used to play ....... and to love?

Rumour of Jordan Bowery coming back. Also when Sheridan was at Oldham he signed Dan Gardner on a 2 year deal in June 2017 and it looks like his contract could be up in June, so you never know he could come back.

A lot of the players we've already got are good enough to get us promoted, we just need a few additions. I would like to see Levi get a chance in the first team next season. We've got 35 players which is quite a lot. You only get 16 players in a matchday squad at this level so the squad needs to be trimmed down to about 18-20 players and if we need any additions then you can sign them before March.

Denton, scores goals, poses a threat from set pieces, defends well and is under contract . Bowery erm well, doesn't score very often, my pet hamsters more threatening and his idea of defending is holding his hands up to his face. Please explain the logic in this rumour.

Lets just throw random ex Sheri player names at the wall, am sure some will stick. How about Craig Davis - done a sterling job to assist keeping Mansfield in Lge2, Danny Whitaker - helping Macclesfield to .............................. (fill in the dots after Saturday). Wheres Jamie Lowry these days? I'm sure he will come running back.
In a recent interview Sheridan says he gets calls from ex players wanting to play for him. I assume these are the same ex players that just don't listen to him.

We need to follow the example of the more successful teams in our league, sign players who want to get stuck in and fight for a win and get our own yougsters bloodied, not signing old has beens just because they used to play for Sheridan.

I realise that being able to sign on players almost throughout the season enables National League sides to limit the size of their squads, but a squad of 18 would surely be too small. Take Carter, Talbot and Wedgbury out for a large part of our season from its early days. That leaves just 15 players and one of those has to be a reliable second keeper or a new first one ……… There are always going to be players with knocks who may not be in full training for a few days too. A squad of 18-20 is going to leave the manager without the ability to even arrange an 11-a-side in training without bringing in almost half the Junior team …….

I agree that our current squad is far too big, but that is a result of poor recruitment over a prolonged period and management changes. We need to ditch quite a lot of players, but we also need to reward those who have led this season’s recovery …… so that any new recruits join a happy group. BUT the squad created does need BOTH to accommodate those developing 18-20 year olds, aiming to make that leap from fringe player to first choice, AND provide a bench of players who can not only cover for injuries but also change a game in tactical substitutions (which means they can’t all be inexperienced youngsters). By my reckoning that means a squad of perhaps 24.

The ability to bring in players throughout the season is a double-edged sword. It means you can permanently renew and freshen up a squad as well as cover for long-term injuries, but poor recruitment can also disturb a successful side and lead a manager to lose his sense of direction. In a sense that’s what worries me about Jordan Bowery. He is certainly a good enough player for us, but would he be the right player for us? He's way better than the picture Dancing paints, but his career is on a steady downward trajectory.

Throughout the season Wrexham have relied upon bringing in new players and changing managers. They’ll be in the Play-Offs. Will it work and get them into the EFL, or will they find that when push comes to shove they’ve lost something essential to a successful TEAM? We’ll see. Orient on the other hand have been pretty stable and have owed a lot to the hard-work of a very-grounded player in Craig Clay. They know what they are doing, always go the full 90, can come from behind and also proved themselves able to put a poor run behind them. They, like Solihull, have been a team.

I'm pretty certain Sheri can't expect a war chest for recruitment. That's why I keep suggesting non-leaguers, who as Dancing suggests, may be eager to fight their way to a more lucrative EFL career. That's why I like the idea of signing Alex Brown from Buxton, he's young and capable of playing higher, he clearly wants to, and his record shows he does his job every week! Get few of that kind and you might afford yourself a gamble on a more mercurial talent too.

I'd also suggest taking a look at teams who have been successful at lower levels throughout the season. Warrington's not that far. They've got at least two up-and-coming younger players in Dylan Vassallo and Ben Garritty. And if we want another forward who will score goals, rather than old-favourite Jordan Bowery, take your pick from Glen Taylor (Spennymoor), Brandon Goodship (Weymouth), Tshimanga (Oxford City), Zak Ansah (Hythe) who would all do less damage to the wage bill.

(By the way I only just cottoned on that young Percy Kiangebeni of St Albans, who I've been banging on about for two years as a player we should grab, signed a contract with Colchester United in the January window. You see I do sometimes get some things right ......... sometimes.)
