Smile - Face - Face - Smile - Dancingwilldoit - 23-03-2019

Thats only the 3rd time this season I have come out of the Proact with a smile.
Aldershot, Ebbsfleet and again today.
First half I thought - "Here we go again", but I was wrong. We were poor and even though we went in a goal up, Sutton looked the more likely to score.
Second half was a different story, Boden scored a cracker and Denton did what he does best.
Thought Maguire was excellent and really don't know why he not a regular in our team. Rowley stepped up a gear in the second half and if he had finished better could have had a couple.
A good day at the office but a bit late now for it to make a difference. At least we wont start next season in the Conference North.

I didn`t go yesterday, but I watched the match on the telly at my local. I got a few derisive snorts from the local Leicester City-ites when I asked the landlord to put it on, but he was good enough to do it anyway. Mind you, with the amount of dosh that I`ve handed across his bar over the years, he bloody well should be. I thought the sarcastic comments about having to have the system wiped clean afterwards were a bit unnecessary, though.

Like you, Dancing, I was a happy bunny at the end. I thought the scoreline certainly flattered us; Sutton should have been at least 1 up at halftime on the run of play (I don`t know what happened that last 20 minutes of the first half; our midfield just seemed to evaporate into thin air) but it was noticeable that after those 2 quick goals in the second half we relaxed and started to play some quite fluent stuff. Hopefully, that`s a sign of things to come now that we can finally forget the `r` word for this year. By my reckoning, even if H&W win all their last 7 games - unlikely in the extreme, I would have thought – we only need 11 max (probably 10) from 6 to be safe. I refuse to believe that even we can cock that one up. Sighs of relief all round, I would have thought.

I think I said at the start of the season that for me a top-half finish would be acceptable this year. It seems ridiculous after all the trauma that we`ve been through this season, but we could actually just about manage it with a good finish - and unless I`m mistaken 5 of our remaining games are against teams lower than us. One of the commentators made an interesting comparison between us this season and Leyton Orient last, which was apparently very similar. They finished with a good run and carried it on into this. Yes, please.

Good finish by Scott Boden, by the way. Any seconds for the humble pie, anyone, or has everybody had enough by now?

Very interesting comments on the game. My view of Scott Boden hasn't changed. If we had already got him I would have kept him, I wouldn't go out of my way to get him. But I'll admit goals do make a huge difference.

He's never been a regular mainspring starter in a successful team. He scores some goals and is useful but just as there was at Gateshead someone else is the vital cog. At Gateshead it was a Middlesbrough loanee. Boden has been missed, but his loss hasn't devastated them. That doesn't mean he isn't doing a decent job for us now, but the bigger question is if we are finishing off the season like Orient last season, can Boden be next season's Macauley Bonne? My opinion is this Boden is the best Boden there is and that we would need something else to carry us into a promotion position.

Scott's career:-
2007–2008 Sheffield United
2008 → IFK Mariehamn (loan)
2008–2013 Chesterfield
2011 → Macclesfield Town (loan)
2013 → Alfreton Town (loan)
2013–2014 Macclesfield Town
2014–2015 FC Halifax Town
2015–2016 Newport County
2016–2017 Inverness Caledonian Thistle
2017–2018 Wrexham
2018–2019 Gateshead
2019– Chesterfield

If I were a Havant fan I'd be thinking thinking they have to win at least one of their two games this week to have a chance of saving themselves and they are both away games. For us one win and a draw would mean for any of the current bottom four to overtake us in view of our goal difference, they'd have have to get 16 more points at least.

Like Dancing I find it hard to understand why Maguire isn't just a regular name on our team sheet and we could decide later where to play him. Tuesday he was captain of England's non-league team, come Saturday he is struggling for a place in quite a poor team ......... someone is getting it wrong.

By the way whilst we are talking goalscorers - Grimsby, locked at 0-0 with Bury, didn't think Dennis was worth even five minutes on the pitch to try and break the deadlock.

RE: Smile - Face - Face - Smile - Dancingwilldoit - 24-03-2019

I wasn't keen on the re signing of Boden but credit where its due he did well yesterday. For all everybody calls him, Denton is a very good player. Him and Boden seem to have a good understanding. Before Boden came in Denton was flicking on headers into open spaces but nobody was running into the spaces even though they knew where it was going. Boden understands Toms game and does well on it. They could be worth a few goals next season as a partnership.

Some prick on Bobs Board is seriously suggesting we should re sign Jordan Bowery in the summer. A few years ago we had the worst strike partnership I can remember in the 2B's Boden and Bowery. They both huffed and puffed a lot and I dont think Sheridan could believe his luck when Villa offered real money for Bowery. It must have been the easiest £1million anybody ever made. The thought of winding the clock back - again, makes me shiver.

He's at Crewe and he won't drop down to the Conference to play football. One player who I think would do wonders for us in the Conference is Armand but he's doing fantastically well at Blackpool.

RE: Smile - Face - Face - Smile - Devongone - 26-03-2019

I don't remember Boden and Bowyer combining too often for us. I saw Boden and Westcarr for us at Exeter and they discovered a whole new dimension to toothless.

Boden is doing very well this season, but he is very reliant on the players around him. Denton may be good for him. My worry about him is that he sometimes seems physically quite weak for such a big guy. If I were Chesterfield I'd keep him in training through the summer break ....... I don't want to turn him into Jon Parkin ....... but there are a lot of big defenders in this league who are more than happy to match their big for your big. Even with Amantchi and Rawson's development I think we need another forward capable of scoring goals if we are to challenge next season.

I don't think Bowery went for a million - it was maybe half that. It was a bad move for him. He went to a club in decline who were signing several lower-leaguers at the time in the hope of netting some cheap magic. He had very little hope of getting a game and very rarely managed it. He's struggled since but he has been doing well at Crewe recently. Like Matt I'm doubtful he'd come back and I'm not sure he's the right type for us now.

The trouble with Bob's was (and probably still is) very few of them have grasped that we are non-leaguers and that our most likely productive source of recruitment will be at our own level and below. I think we are better to recruit players who want to get up to the EFL, not ones who have slid slowly down the divisions. Me, I'd have a little gamble on a Brandon Goodship, a Glen Taylor, Tshimanga or even Maclaggon from the Barry Town who Rowley and Maguire came up against the other night. If we'd any sense we'd be scouring the goalscoring charts and taking a look at some of these guys before the end of the season ........ but that's not the Chesterfield way is it?

As for Armand, dream on, he should be looking to step up on what he's done this season.

RE: Smile - Face - Face - Smile - Dancingwilldoit - 27-03-2019

Dev, Bowery is supposed to be a striker, his return this season so far at Crewe is 8 goals. To me that's not doing too well, he should be at least in double figures to be doing ok. To put it into perspective its 2 more than COG has managed this season which to me says it all - No thanks steer well clear. Bowery had an absolute blinder against I think it was West Ham or could have been Man City? (in the days when we got past the first round of any important cup) He scored a cracker and I assume on that performance Villa saw the potential. He had never shown it before and hasn't shown it since.
His transfer fee at the time was given as £1mill but that included add ons based on appearances so you are probably right it would have been less.

RE: Smile - Face - Face - Smile - Devongone - 27-03-2019

Bowery got 13 for Crewe last season, he'll probably end on 10+ this. Taking into account he's never been just a goal poacher and is in a pretty moderate side it isn't a bad return. My problem with him is I'm not sure what he is. At times he looks like a centre forward, Villa used to push him wide and that sometimes looks right and often he looks as though he should play off a central striker. If he were on our books now I'm sure he'd be getting plenty of games, but I'm not convinced we'd be much better for having him .............. He can play, he's a danger certainly. If we'd got him I'd be probably saying keep him, but he doesn't look like the answer to our promotion prayers.

The alternative to signing a striker would be getting Lee Shaw back on the scoring trail. He was once scoring at much the same rate as Dennis managed at Curzon Ashton and that has dried up completely. I know he has stepped up in class but he doesn't display the selfishness you usually see in a striker does he? Is it just lack of self confidence?

Last time we played Man City and West Ham was in the League Cup back in 2006 and I don't think Bowery was even at the club at that time. Just googled it, he made 101 appearances in all competitions for Chesterfield scoring 17 goals. Before he left for Villa he only made 3 appearances scoring 1 goal that was at the start of the 2012/13 season and the goal he was scored on the 25th August against Rotherham at home in a 1-1 draw. I remember going to that game because Sheridan got sacked a few days after.

He scored 12 goals in the season we got relegated back to L2 and won the JPT, he scored 3 goals en route to Wembley.

In his career he has made 330 appearances scoring 55 goals.

Interestingly his contract expires at the end of the season for Crewe, apparently he's a fan favourite.

RE: Smile - Face - Face - Smile - Devongone - 29-03-2019

Bowery has made a lot sub and subbed appearances with us and every club he has played for. To that extent his stats are a little misleading.
