Six-point musings, or what happens next - Devongone - 18-03-2019

Any normal club in our position would now be safe. Havant who haven’t been winning one game in every four all season now need to win three in seven to overtake us if we get NO MORE points. Aldershot would need to win four and draw two of their last eight, whilst Maidstone would need to win from six of eight. But we are Chesterfield, so what happens next always has at least one foot in the random.

Any normal club in our position would already be casting an eye towards the next campaign. Who do we need to get rid of and who can we get rid of …….. and what kind of players do we need to bring in to make some impact in this very difficult league? Much of this season’s campaign has actually been dictated by players unwisely given unjustifiable contracts, who proved impossible to ditch. As ever I don’t know the full contractual position of our current set of players …….. but in SpireiteMatt I think I know a man who does.

I’ve often floated the names of non-league players who might make their mark, but it has to be admitted there are failures amongst the successes. Okay I recommended Sean Raggett when he was at Dover and he’s now at Norwich, Pinnock too from the same club has been one of Wimbledon’s few consistent players as they struggled this season despite Piggott’s goals (another non-leaguer), Okenabirhie’s done well-ish at Shrewsbury as has Ferrier at Walsall, but neither club has had a good season. And I thought Sonupe would star at Stevenage and he’s hardly got a game and Reise Allassani, supposedly the most skilled player in non-league, has not figured at Coventry and was sub on loan at Woking when scoring two on Saturday. Even Grant Smith from Boreham Wood has struggled to keep his place in goal for Lincoln and I’d have said he was a sure-fire success. So coming up with new successful signings isn’t a matter of shooting fish in a barrel! (Though the amount of stick I took on Bob’s for saying I thought Dennis was unlikely to succeed at Notts County or anywhere else does make me almost feel like going back on there just to mention that Grimsby, locked at 0-0 on Saturday, are now so impressed with him they thought he was worth just five minutes to break the deadlock …. Some players score goals almost at the expense of their own team. He can clearly play, but there’s sumut wrong somewhere.)

Next season I’d be looking at Amantchi and Boden up front and would like to sign at least one more real goalscorer. My current favourites are Thsimanga at Oxford City and Glen Taylor at Spennymoor and for a big man I’d rather have Rowan Liburd from Guiseley than our own Tom Denton (but then he might improve with a full pre-season). And maybe Rawson is turning back into a runner for us too. In midfield we have Carter and Rowley. We can ditch Weir and Weston, yes? Will Wedgbury be able to return? I thought he should have been a good signing. We need a touch of class …. and I’d be inclined to take Sonupe from Stevenage for free and as ever I’d try and sign Dover’s captain, who can play midfield, full back or centre back, Mitch Brundle. Joe Wheatley from Darlington would also be a useful, hard-working midfield option. At the back we need two keepers don’t we? Peterborough have been on the down ever since they dropped Aaron Chapman, but I suppose he’s out of our range. Huddart from Boreham Wood would be good. At centre back Will Evans has been a hero, we’ve got Maguire, I imagine Hollis is available and probably would sign too. I’d also try and keep Binnom-Williams, because, well he’s different. And I’d add Alex Brown from Buxton who alongside Sharman and Render would give us options at the back.

My big signing, and I imagine we’d have to put some money down, would be Matt Kosylo from Halifax. Definite outs? Weir, Dodds, Anyon, Shlal?, Barry, Weston, Reid, George Smith, Nelson, Fortune, Ugwu (unfortunately), Talbot (oh dear) for a start …

So what and who do you want to see? I reckon a sound defence is an obvious necessity, a midfield that can win the ball, retain it reasonably well and has a creative spark and a few goals in it has to be the aim and up front you need to cause the opposition constant trouble and be able to grab a few of the chances that creates. At the most basic level we have to keep goals conceded down and show we carry a goal threat from open play dontcha think? Reasons to be cheerful: three points at Havant. There might actually be a next season.

Our retained list isnt that bad; Jalal, Wedgbury, Evans, Shaw, Carter, Denton, J Smith, Sharman, Rawson, Boden, Rowley, Amantchi, Maguire

If you are going to play Carter and Rowley in midfield you will need somebody who can get stuck in and break up the opposition play. Neither of them are that type of player. I saw Wedgebury at Alfreton pre season and he looked to fit the bill, but he didn't shine that match.
We have Denton for another year and personally I wouldn't mind seeing see Boden, Denton, Amantchi and Rawson as our strike force. Carter Rowley Shaw (needs to start scoring) and Smith, should chip in with a few. Sharman looked useful the games he played pre Shez and I still rate Maguire who hasn't even made the bench of late. Maybe a back 3 of Maguire Evans and Sharman.
We need a new keeper and at least 1 another centre back if we continue with 3-5-2 so he can switch it to 4-4-2 which used to be Shez's preferred formation. Hollis has upped his game of late but still has his moments which give me a nervous twitch. He wouldn't be one on my shopping list. Kiwomya on the other hand would be. He is pacy, gets himself in good positions and runs at defenders. One to bring on against tired defenders.

On Bobs board they reckon get rid of them all except Carter Evans and Rowley basically. It just isn't going to happen so why even go there. We wont have any money to buy off contracts.
Now we look secure get the youngsters back and give them a few games. Lets see what they can do when not under pressure. Will it happen - not a chance.

If god, who clearly doesn't exist, intervened on Saturday and we beat Sutton I'd agree get Amantchi back and start him and get Rawson on the bench to replace a front-runner. Sharman at right back, why not? Get Carter (some games).

But I do think if we wanted to go up next season we have to look for someone who'd definitely improve us. For me Brundle from Dover and Kosylo from Halifax add reslience, versatility and a tackle in Brundle's case and creativity and a goal threat in Kosylo's.

My only objection to Kiwomya is he seems to be fit only slightly more often than Drew Talbot. I like the pace and skill ......

2019; Dodds, Barry, G Smith, Anyon, Ugwu, Wakefield, Binnom-Williams, Weir, Nelson, Weston, Talbot, Muggleton (option for a 2nd year), Fortune, Reid, Ofoegbu

2020; Jalal, Wedgbury, Evans, Shaw, Carter (option for a 3rd year), Denton, J Smith, Sharman (option to extend), Rawson, Boden (option to extend)

2021; Rowley, Amantchi, Maguire

I honestly believe if we recruit well in the summer we could get promotion next season.

Thanks for that Matt. I reckon anybody in the league could get promotion if they recruit well, so long as they haven't got an artificial pitch. Look at Solihull this season.

Given my way I'd offer another year to Binnom-Williams and Ofoegbu and think about Charlie Wakefield. I now only have to recruit one keeper so I can get one who is 21-22 ish in view of Jalal's experience.

I'm sure we're not going to have much money to lash out, and maybe I'm mad to want to take a risk on the most ill-disciplined player in our league, but I'd have to try for Kosylo from Halifax as I think he'd give us a dimension we lack, a few goals and a touch of class. Otherwise I'd be happy to recruit from below us. Alex Brown at Buxton for instance seems a consistent, there every week player - he's bright and ambitious and I'm sure he'd see us as a chance to reach the EFL.

My theory is you want a nucleus of players who want to step up in their careers. My worry with Mr Sheridan as manager is that he probably doesn't know the non-league scene and may well recruit amongst EFL names on a downward spiral. That will fail. The National League isn't an easy option for legs getting to the end of a long career is it?

By the way where is Render on your list?

And I don't believe anything anymore.
God, Fairies, The Loch ness Monster, Brexit - Dear EU, give us another 10 years and we might think of a something we can all agree on Ha Ha, I could go on but it just bores me now.
You can recruit as well as you like Matt but if they don't make a team you've got no chance.

Alex Brown is a very good player.

Have we recruited well in the last 2 seasons? I don't think we have. I think the last great team we had was under Cook the 2015 team.

If I was in charge I would look at strengthening the defence, making it tighter especially the centre Back's and have 2 versatile full backs which can play on the wing too. Would bring in two attacking midfielders who can play on the wing and work the channels and have another centre-forward which can work well with Boden. Also bring in another keeper for cover for Jalal.

I reckon recruiting well is bringing together players who will make a team. A team of Kosylos getting booked 11 times so far this season would be a bad thing ....... but in the right environment with a calm manager like Mr Sheridan ........ yeah he might blow his top entirely ........

Alex Brown got an England C cap whilst at Sheffield FC. I'm guessing he's finishing his degree at Hallam now so we should get in there. Paul Fairclough knows talent.

I'm surprised Matt sees centre back as a priority when we have Maguire and Evans. Will Evans is just heroism in footie boots. I'd have thought he and Loz were the players to build upon. If we don't grab Hollis we need another though ...... but Alex Brown can play centre back or full back ....... and if I could have my wish and we could get Brundle from Dover he'll cover any hole in defence or defensive midfield.

I believe in ........ is an opening to a sentence I cannot finish. At one time the answer would've been Robert Fripp, but now? Slugs in your delphiniums?

RE: Six-point musings, or what happens next - Dancingwilldoit - 19-03-2019

When I first read that Dev I thought it said Suggs in my Delphiniums. From King Crimson to Madness in one sentence.
21st Century Schizoid Man is in Our House.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLCIfDqgDIk Public Health warning contains the line - Politicians Funeral Pyre - well we can live in hope.

RE: Six-point musings, or what happens next - Devongone - 20-03-2019

Cat's foot iron claw
Neuro-surgeon screams for more
At paranoia's poison door
Twenty-First Century Schizoid man

I could go on ........
Bat's seed blind man's greed
Poet's starving children bleed
Twenty First Century Schizoid man.

How come I can remember that and barely find my way home ...........? Where are you now Pete Sinfield? Robert Fripp is still married to Toyah I think and lives near here .......

Couldn't the team run out to that next season ........ or even Prodigy's Firestarter? Or we could confuse everyone with The Black Angel's Death Song by Velvet Underground.

Suggs would be a great find amongst the delphiniums. Like Monty Don he'd be wearing baggy trousers.
