Great Expectations - Amelia Chaffinch - 20-01-2019 Time for a little rant. The atmosphere is becoming increasingly morose. What went wrong? Well, when David first came in, we survived. Then he made some signings and took them all away to the summer camp. They looked like a real team, playing for each other and for us, and started winning. Let the good times roll. We made it to the play-offs and we got to the final ... without scoring a goal! We only went and won it ... without scoring a goal! The majority of us couldn't believe it and majority of that majority decided to enjoy the ride. The team looked impressive, despite being up against superior opposition most of the time, and we had fun. We sang whether we were winning or losing, we were gathering a reputation for being the best fans in the premier league. If we were losing, we sang "don't worry about a thing...". All was well. We avoided relegation despite just about all the so-called experts tipping us for it week after week after week. THEN, some of our fans expected Deano to spend, spend, spend like he'd never done before. Why would he do that? He promised a long time ago that he would never put us at risk. As well as that, it sounds like he's been ill and possibly not in a position to do what some moaners expected him to do. But, whatever the reason, I can see that it would be out of character for him to splash silly money about. I agree that our strikers haven't stepped up but I can also see brilliant effort time and again from the likes of Schindler, Mooy, Hogg, Kongolo, Zanka amongst others. The players continue to respect the fans except for one occasion against Bristol City, Even then, the stalwarts went over. I still think that DW became disillusioned by reffing decisions. I do think that refs are influenced by big clubs and players. Pundits continually condone "top" players whilst not criticising us for the equivalent. There is an unfairness to the premier league. I really believe that. BUT, despite all the disappointments, I think the greatest damage has been done to the atmosphere by ourselves. Expectation has been the enemy. As DW said, we shouldn't expect the extraordinary to be the ordinary or the unusual to be usual... or words to that effect. RE: Great Expectations - theo_luddite - 20-01-2019 The bandwagon jumpers are finally seeing what we've seen for decades and they don't like it so they are sitting on their hands. It never fails to amaze me how good some folk are at spending other folk's money. Burnalee, West Brom, Newcastle, West Ham have all gone down and bounced back a bit stronger (generally). No reason we can't do the same. Don't understand why some folk seem to think spending £100 million will guarantee you stay up - ask Fulham fans if they think they spent well last Summer right now or just threw money at it hoping it would stick? Looked like they might get something today but karma struck when Spurs scored in the last minute. Onwards and downwards this season - upwards starts next season, but no reason to lie down and have our tummies tickled for the rest of the season. Hoggy isn't giving up and Mooy should be back soon, hopefully. Meanwhile, can we drag someone off the bowls green that knows where the onion bag is? RE: Great Expectations - Lord Snooty - 20-01-2019 All four sides of the ground were singing last season. There's only me and Chaffers singing in our section now. Come on. Sing up! RE: Great Expectations - Amelia Chaffinch - 20-01-2019 I was singing on my own with my scarf held aloft at one point today. Snoots was chatting to our nephew. Not one boring b joined in. RE: Great Expectations - theo_luddite - 20-01-2019 Are they eating prawn sandwiches? RE: Great Expectations - Amelia Chaffinch - 20-01-2019 No but those in the boxes behind might be. Talking of knobheads sitting nearby (like the ones that called for DW's head but are still complaining today now he's gone), well one of them shouted at Hogg that he should have "put his foot in" when Hogg was already on one yellow. Clueless. RE: Great Expectations - WakeyTerrier - 21-01-2019 some of our fans expected Deano to spend, spend, spend like he'd never done before. Can i say some of our fans think the summer transfer business we did was piss poor. Diakhaby,Bacuna and Sohbi for a kick off. How much did that lot cost us in transfers and wages. Last summers transfers have effectively cost us dearly both in financial terms but also on the pitch. I still think that DW became disillusioned by reffing decisions. I don't think he did, I think the pressure he put on himself to get results proved too much for him. I do think that refs are influenced by big clubs and players I think the refs and liners do the best job they can under massive scrutiny. Look at Yesterday when he didn't give Sterling a penalty, look at the other week down at Arsenal when he booked 3 of the gooners for diving. Swings and roundabouts IMO There is an unfairness to the premier league. You're right, there is a unfairness to the Premier League, but its a financial unfairness. Next season in the Championship it will be the teams like who don't receive massive parachute payments from the PL saying exactly the same thing about us Expectation has been the enemy You're right again, whilst nobody expected us to be in anything other than a relegation battle many us didn't believe we'd be cut adrift like we are now We expected having spent another £50million in the transfer market that it might give us a better chance,.. We expected having spunked millions on wingers that we might actually play some wingers. RE: Great Expectations - theo_luddite - 21-01-2019 I'll beg to differ on the ref decisions in several games Wakey, last season as much as this, but otherwise no more bones to pick there. They will only be worse next season if (when) we go down (the blind mice that is). Other than I don't think we spent £50 MILLION this season but will be happy to be proved wrong. Not far off though by this valuation but we only spent about £20m on players we hadn't already got in on loan last season. So most of it was players we already had seen for at least 6 months. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jumplist/transfers/verein/1110 |
