Memphis Depay - turkeydinner - 13-11-2014

I hope this has truth to it Thumb up Best player in the Erdeviste last year and a snip at that price, pace and skill to burn and a bargain at the price

Manchester United are said to be closing in on the signing of Memphis Depay after his club PSV confirmed they will sell the Dutch winger.

United made an approach to sign Depay in the summer, but despite Louis van Gaal pushing for the switch to happen, he ended up staying in Holland.

However, the Daily Express reports that the Red Devils are now closing in on sealing the transfer, following news that PSV will let him go in January.

‘Of course Memphis will be sold, you can’t stop that but it’s okay,’ said PSV coach Phillip Cocu.

United are happy to hand over £18million to bring in the player who has been dubbed ‘the Dutch Cristiano Ronaldo’

Rumours abundant about weve pre-signed him for 10M if so this is an astounding pieace of business rather than paying over the odds

reading another forum and they are concerned about players coming to the UK from the Erdeviste, mentioning the likes of Ryan Babel

Personally for every Alavro Alves, Mateja Kezman, Orlando Trustfull all talented players who never made it in the EPL there has been Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Arjen Robben, Marc Overmars, Luis Suarez to name but a few

It's a bit hit and miss though. The problem is it can be hard to judge when teams in the Dutch leagues tend to be wide open. Players get loads of time and space to look good at their jobs, but until they get tested in a faster, tighter environment you never really know how they'll cope. The genuine articles succeed but the 'fakes' crumble badly. Not much you can do except take a punt and chuck them in there.

RE: Memphis Depay - turkeydinner - 11-02-2015

Lets go way back to the first Dutch players coming to play here, couple of guys who came to Ipswich Town in I think 1978 Frans Thijssen and Arnold Muhren, both won the UEFA cup with Ipswich in 1981 part of Bobby Robsons awesome side (shouldve won the title), Thijssen won the player of the year award whilst Muhren would join Man Utd, in fact Muhren later returned to Ajax and won the European Championships with Holland in 1988 at 38 years of age.

The next Dutch player I recall is the Goalkeeper Hans Van Breukelen who replaced the legendary Peter Shilton at Nottingham Forest for two years after signing from mid-table Utrecht. After falling foul of Clough despite his fine form for the club he joined PSV Eindhoven who he stayed with til he retired in 1994, along the way winning the European Cup in 1988 and the European Championship in 188.

a Tubby Dane was signed by Liverpool from Ajax, his name was Jan Molby, sadly underappreciated these days when compiling `legends` lists but anyone who remembers him would possibly say the greatest passer of a ball Liverpool ever had

Skip forward to 1994 when it became the in vogue thing for the new Premier league to sign foreign and world cup stars

Look at the big three in Holland and some of the stars that played for them over the early to mid nineties, many gracing the premier league

Ajax: Frank and Ronald de Boer, Michael reizeiger, Wim Jonk, Winston Bogarde, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Marc Overmars, Finidi George, Dennis Bergkamp, Bryan Roy, Nwanko Kanu, Edwin Van der Saar, Jari Litmanen, Patrick Kluivert, Frank Rijkkaard

PSV: Andre Ooijer, Romario, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, Arthur Numan, Luc Nillis, Gilles de Bilde, Jaap Stam, Phillip Cocu, Bouwedijn Zenden, Wim Jonk,

Feyenoord: John De Wolf, Ed de Goey, Ulrich Van Gobbel, Peter Van Vossen, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, Ronald Koeman

Overall its not bad, a few duds but probably no worse than any other league, I dont really accept the slower pace thing as Italy for example is a lot more of crawl speed and how many Strikers from Italy have come good bar Giafranco Zola? -Vialli, Mancini, Maccarone, Balotelli, Cashiragi, etc had a moment but never set anything really on fire

Hope the article was interesting anyway

The players from Italy kind of support my point though, no? The Italian league has less space in the box but the pace is far slower. Guys who look like legends in Italy come to the British game and make no impact because they don't get the time they're used to. Conversely the Italian leagues haven't lent themselves that well to players who are all about pace because the teams there know how to sit deep and nullify it. There are no absolutes either way, but some players really only thrive in one environment.

There are definitely a lot of guys who've come from the Netherlands and succeeded in Britain though. Lots who've failed too, but not so many that were considered that high calibre to begin with, and defenders seem to do better off (off the top of my head Kuyt, Kezman and Samaras are the only 3 I can think of who were big in the Netherlands at the time but didn't cut it as strikers in England. Kluivert did well at Ajax and Barca but was a bit of a failure everywhere else including Newcastle, so a bit mixed for him). It's probably no more of a risk than buying from anywhere else to be fair, so I'd say someone like Depay has a good chance of doing well.

Alfonso Alves was pants for Middlesborough he was top scorer over there, Mateja Kezman was quality for PSV and other teams but didnt do great at Chelsea, Jan Venegoor of Hesselink had a brief spell with Hull but they were struggling anyway.

It may have been money at the time but only perhaps Di Matteo came over to play in this country whilst under 27 years old and a current Italian international, I personally wouldnt go shopping over there for players to make the adjustment to the English leagues

Think the Germans manage to adapt best to the EPL/Championship suprised really managers havent shopped more that way
