COG - Dancingwilldoit - 25-06-2018

I know I have been/am one of his biggest critics - deservedly so, but is there a chance he could do a job at our new level?
He cant jump to head a ball, he doesn't seem to have a shot in him and has a touch like a baby elephant but the one thing he was good at (about the only thing) was holding the ball up to bring others into play.
It looks as though Ugwu will be spearheading our attack so is there a role for COG playing in a kind of 4-3-1-2 behind a front 2? His height and bulk could be useful as he seems to not get bullied off the ball and also could be useful defending set pieces.

I would much rather see him move on but it looks unlikely he will be doing, so do we send our highest paid player home or have him as a bench warmer or try and find a role for him in a structured team? He must have something somewhere that I have missed because he has played at a higher level and didn't seem to be as poor as he was for us last season.

If he turns out to be our backup for Ugwu then I really fear for our safety but could there be a place for him other than with another club?

RE: COG - Devongone - 25-06-2018

When we signed him I couldn't see the point as we already had Gozie (and German ..... less said soonest). Anyway once COG dropped in, Gozie was second choice then quickly out for the season.

COG seemed best as the worker ant in a three-man attack at Wednesday. He's played higher but he's also spent a lot of time being loaned to lower divisions and a lot of time not scoring that many goals for a forward of any kind.

Generally big successes in the the National League aren't players with a long, purely EFL career behind them ...... and that seems particularly applicable to forwards. It seems to me MA's recruitment policy of bringing in National League type players is right. COG doesn't fit the bill - he's on the way down and showed us next to nothing in a whole season. The problem is no one particularly wants him. Maybe DA has to swallow his own pocket and ship him out somewhere on an expensive loan.

Some players help you to score, some accidentally do quite a good job of preventing it. I think COG is one of the latter - he played a lot of games games at Burton in the Championship, scored 2 was it ....... and did the team score all that many themselves? They stayed up that season by defending not attacking.

Thing is though we do need cover for Gozie and a goal poacher to play with him.

Oh Well, he's gone now so its a bit irrelevant. Cant say I'm not pleased.

RE: COG - bluepooch - 25-06-2018

Good timing Dancing .
That should pave the way for at least 2 or 3 quality signings at this level and still save money !

RE: COG - Dancingwilldoit - 25-06-2018

It all depends how much its cost us Blue.

RE: COG - bluepooch - 25-06-2018

As far as I see it contract termination costs aren't affecting MA's budget .I think they were absorbed into DA's debt.
Lets hope we can get in a quality striker actually worth the money this time .

RE: COG - Devongone - 26-06-2018

His going has to be a good move for him and us. With the right team he might still do well, but we didn't use him in a way that suited either party. I think along with Anyon and Wiseman he was very much a negative for us throughout last season.

Finding a quality striker won't be easy and we have somehow to make a team capable of providing the quality chances.

Not convinced Ugwu is the finished article either. Mind you saw him at Luton and I thought he was non-league so we may have something. Time will tell.

RE: COG - Devongone - 27-06-2018

I don't think Gozie will ever look like the finished article to be honest, but he'll be awkward to play against and he's proved he can score a few at this level. However, I wouldn't like to think we were going into a game with him as our lone goalscorer, he needs players round him.

By the way, Welcome Seahorse ...........

COG trialling for Oldham tonight against FC Manc. Guess what - he scored the opening goal. Sign him quick.
