Fenerbahce have announced that Phillip Cocu has been appointed as the club's new boss on a three-year contract.

Cocu led PSV to the Eredivisie title last season, but the former Netherlands international has decided to bring to an end his five-year spell with the Dutch club.

The arrival of Cocu could lead to the signing of Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel after the 47-year-old worked with the playmaker at PSV during the most recent campaign.

Cocu's move to Fenerbahce has resulted in PSV replacing him with Mark van Bommel, who had two spells with the club during his playing career.

Van Bommel is currently acting as assistant to Bert van Marwijk with Australia and will begin his new role after the Socceroos' participation at the World Cup comes to an end.

Thought Cocu would leave for a bigger league but guess Fenerbache will still continue his development

Very glad Van Bommel being given a major job, Dutch national team seems to have used same few managers last thirty years and new stock needs to happen

Strange move for Cocu to go to Fenerbahce. Unless they have a big budget for him to work with, it is really a sideways step for him. He could have waited it out and got a move to the Premier League or Bundesliga in the future.

As for his replacement, it’s good for Mark van Bommel but I thought PSV would have gone with John van den Brom from AZ Alkmaar but it looks like they’re trying to build using their own again like they did with Cocu. I’m pleased West Brom are doing the same with Darren Moore.

This move makes me feel a little older. I still remember the PSV team from 2005 with the central midfield triangle of van Bommel, Simons and Cocu, Park and Beasley outwide and then Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink upfront.

I remember they had a midfield of Cocu-Zenden-Vink-Jonk-Koolka and Luc Nillis up front

Mind you saying that I recall when they signed some Brazilian lad called Ronaldo to replace Romario

I know Football works in cycles but how these Dutch teams can flog players year on year and still be competitive and have quality coming through, great template

One thing I do really admire about Dutch teams is their work on youth progression and I’ve especially always admired Ajax for it. I was growing up in the school when Sneijder and van der Vaart came onto the scene. Then he was followed by Nigel de Jong, Vermaelen and Vertonghen.

Now we get to see how de Ligt, Kluivert and van der Beek will progress in the future. It’s still shame that Abdelhak Nouri won’t be able to play anymore because of his brain damage because he’d have been a big start in the future.
