And my final W/c post - Arcane Astral Aeons - 14-06-2018 2002 first time a World Cup was held in two different countries held between 31st May -£0th June hosted between South Korea and Japan so what did we get? a world cup that sent many people into work bleary eyed due to the kick off times surprise after surprise a freak goal by Brazil the golden goal and a player that was sacked by his club for scoring Group A-Denmark-Uruguay-Senegal-France Group B-Spain-South Africa-Slovenia-Paraguay Group C-Brazil-Costa Rica-Turkey-P R China Group D-South Korea-USA-Portugal-Poland Group E-Germany-Republic Of Ireland-Cameroon-Saudi Arabia Group F-Sweden-England-Argentina-Nigeria Group G-Italy-Mexico-Croatia-Ecuador the opening game was a sure walk over for the French wasnt it? World Cup and reigning European champions however no-one told Senegal after 30mins Senegal stun the French by taking the lead and see out the game 1-0 first time at a world cup and what a way to to announce yourself on the world stage and after a 0-0 with Uruguay and a 2-0 defeat to Denmark the 1998 winners crashed out The Danes and Senegal qualified South Africa could be proud of their part in this world cup a 2-2 draw with Paraguay and a 1-0 win over Slovenia-and a close 3-2 defeat to Spain saw them exit...Spain and Paraguay Qualified from Group B Group C---Brazil/Turkey game ended 2-1 Brazil Turkey were reduced to 9 men after one of the most pathetic sending offs` in w/c history step forward Rivaldo standing at the corner flag the ball is throw towards him to take a corner..it hits him on his thigh..and the guy falls to the floor clutching his face....ref has a shocker and Rivaldo?.......dirty cheating twat Group C saw the surprise package of this W/c South Korea A 2-0 win against Poland a 1-1 draw v the USA and a 1-0 against Portugal saw then win this group a mention also for the USA after a 3-2 win against Portugal a 1-1 with South Korea and despite a 3-1 defeat against Poland the yanks made it into the next round Group E Ireland/Cameroon....silly sod me got up at stupid o clock an a saturday morning to watch this and after 40 minutes wished i hadnt bothered M`Boma gives Cameroon the lead after 40 minutes and after several black cups of coffee i`m about to head back to bed then up steps matty Holland 30 yards out hits a shot that screams into the bottom corner i did go back to bed after that Germany put 8 past Saudia Arabia Irelands progression was always going to hinge on their game with Germany Klose heads Germany in front after 19mins after that Ireland tried and tried but just couldnt score 90+2 mins a long ball into the German box flicked on by Quinn into the path of Robbie Keane who slots it past Kahn pandemonium not only in the far east but also at work was politely asked to stop running round the factory draped in a irish tricolour Happy Days and following a 3-0 over the Saudi Arabia the Irish were through Now to England who yet again struggled in their group after a 1-1 draw against Sweden they then faced Argentina yet again only this time a different result beaten by the hand and feet of Maradonna in 1986-and in 1998 on penalties (who decided to give David Batty a penalty kick) mr Owen weaves his way way into the box and(i dont care what anyone says) trips over a blade of grass and England have a penalty the nation holds its breath up steps public emeny no:1 from 1998 David Beckham smashes it past Cavallero into the net 1-0 England salvation for Mr Beckham and after a boring 0-0 draw with Nigeria the English had qualified OTHER NOTES Mexico And Italy Got Out Of Group G Group H-saw Belgium and Japan move on NEXT 5 of the second round games went to extra time Germany beat Paraguay 1-0 England beat Denmark 3-0 Senegal beat Sweden 2-1 (aet) Spain Beat Ireland 3-2 on penalties The USA beat Mexico 2-0 Brazil beat Belgium 2-0 Turkey got the better of Japan 1-0 then came South Korea and Italy a game that was so bizarre it had everything Christian Vieri puts the Italians 1-0 up after 18mins they looked very comfortable until the 88th minute Seol Ki Hyeon equalises to take the game into extra time and maybe the dreaded golden goal 117 minute we got that golden goal and a sacking to boot Ahn-Jung-Hwan meets a cross and heads it past Buffon...game over South Korea Win 2-1 not all rosey though for the scorer as he was playing for Perugia at the time in Serie A after the fuss died down he was sacked by his club one can only assume it was because of that goal Italian Humour i guess the guy went on to play in China Germany France and Japan score a goal and get the sack...crazy Quarter Finals Germany squeezed past the USA 1-0 but i will say the USA were outstanding during this game the South Korean dream continued as they beat Spain 5-3 on penalties Senegals` run was halted by the Turks beating them 1-0 then THAT game England/Brazil England ahead through Owen after 23 mins making the country choke on their cornflakes and despite almost total Brazilian posession England were comfortable hardly trouble by Brazil until first half stoppage time Rivaldo after a one two slips the ball past Seaman h/t-1-1 Second half a free kick to Brazil up steps Ronaldinho was it a cross? was it a shot only he knew it flies over Seaman into the top corner 2-1 Brazil and despite Ronaldinho being sent off just 7 minutes later England created next to nothing and were on their way home Semi Finals Germany/South Korea Brazil/Turkey there was to be no fairy tale final for the co-hosts as they were beaten 1-0 by Germany who left it late but a 75th minute goal by Ballack saw of the spirited South Koreans and so it ended for the Koreans but what a ride they had......outstanding the other Semi final was a repeat of the Group game although this time Rivaldo wasnt hit in the face by a ball that clearly hit him in the nuts during the group game a goal just after half time for Brazil set up a meeting with the Germans FINAL dont actually remember watching this but for the record Ronaldo scores twice as Brazil win 2-0 sorry about that but i was probably sorting out someones accounts while the game was on.....yes i`m one of those fully qualified anyways thanks for reading and as usual feel free to add what i forgot RE: And my final W/c post - talkSAFT - 14-06-2018 Thanks for reminding us about those Finals, Mary. I remember some of the highlights you mention but wouldn't have known whether it was 1998/2002/2006. (Can't recall anything which you haven't included, but I thought England won the Final, making it 3 in a row and keeping the trophy). RE: And my final W/c post - 4evaabaggie - 14-06-2018 QE, was on holiday in Spain ......Minorca to be precise ...... got up early ...... went to a bar to watch it ....... drinking beer that early didn't help the disappointment ......... As you say leading one nil heading for half time ....... ball out on the wing, halfway line ish ....... ball heading for touch, a Brazilian, not that kind you dirty dirty minded people, goes for it with David Beckham, Beckham pulls out of the challenge expecting the ball to go dead, it's kept in play and Brazil score ....... thanks DB, a great servant for England but fair share of mistakes and costly decisions ......... then that winner ...... David is it a bird, is it a plane, oh shit what was that Seaman ....... repeats his Aresnal UEFA (Europa) cup exploits and watches an unidentified flying object land in the back of his onion bag from distance, not a stunning dipping swirling exocet but a gentle half hearted miss hit free kick shot that a league two keeper should have saved .... another defeat snatched from the jaws of victory ....... really thought it was our year, all the big hitters falling by the wayside ...... beat Brazil and we had a realistic chance ........ it's the hope that kills you. RE: And my final W/c post - Zinman - 14-06-2018 Watched the South Korea/Italy game in a bar in Italy. I seem to remember some bizarre refereeing decisions. The locals weren’t happy. RE: And my final W/c post - silverbaggie - 14-06-2018 You may have mentioned it QE but in which year did Beckham get sent off for flicking his leg at an Argentinian whilst lying prone on the ground? It was at worst only a gentle tap but the Argie went down as if DB had used a chainsaw. Petulent David had just started his relationship with the Spice Girl, and was showing off what a hard case he was pretending to be. It cost us the game, but he didn't care. I've never liked the twat since. ![]() RE: And my final W/c post - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 14-06-2018 Bit of a stretch to say he didn't care; his celebration after scoring the penalty that beat Argentina four years later illustrated the exact opposite. Mary !! ![]() Gareth had the op Saft ![]() RE: And my final W/c post - WBA-Josh - 14-06-2018 It was Diego Simeone that he kicked. A player who was known for being a hard man and a very tough tackler at Inter Milan. His response to Beckham’s tap made him look like a pussy. RE: And my final W/c post - 4evaabaggie - 14-06-2018 1998, I was on an advanced driving course with work, another exit at his hands. |
