Thanks You Lot - Arcane Astral Aeons - 12-06-2018 thanks for the comments regarding my World Cup posts this one is dedicated to the 1986 World Cup held in Mexico 31st May-29th June 1986 after Spain 1982 European countries were not allowed to bid to host the W/C, it was originally given to Columbia but due to financial and economic reasons Columbia declined to host it and it was given to Mexico and it introduced to the world (wait for it) the Mexican wave...what else would it have been called? the worlds greatest player decided if he could`nt use his feet he would use another way to score (that to come) as for the home nations: we had England,Scotland,And another showing from Northern Ireland Groups A-Argentina-Bulgaria-South Korea-Italy B-Mexico-Belgium-Iraq(!)-Paraguay C-Soviet Union-France-Hungary-Canada D-Brazil-Spain-Northern Ireland-Algeria E-Denmark-West Germany-Uruguay-Scotland F-Morocco-England-Portugal-Poland i`m actually winging this as i don`t actually remember much about it so here goes opening game was a bore Italy and Bulgaria playing out a dire 1-1 draw Argentina swept past South Korea 3-1 And Along with Italians made it to the next round along with Bulgaria who managed to qualify by not winning a game The Hosts began with a 2-1 win against Belgium and followed it up with a 1-1 draw with Paraguay and a 1-0 win against Iraq Iraq is has to be said were not disgraced only losing by the odd goal in their 3 games The French were on a mission, hoping to go one better than their 1982 semi final defeat to West Germany they began with hard fought 1-0 against Canada a 1-1 draw followed with the Hungarians, who had been thumped 6-0 by the Soviet Union despite this France and the Soviet Union progressed Northern Ireland (outclassed) were thumped 3-0 by Brazil drew 1-1 with Algeria and lost a close game to Spain 2-1 i will leave England for the time being Scotland well what can about them? always so near but so far and it was the same yet again after a defeat against Denmark 1-0 they then came up against West Germany Strachan gives the scots the lead after 18 mins..followed by one of those classic w/c moments in trying to jump the advertising hoardings realises he wont make it and to protect his nuts decided to lift his leg over...priceless anyway the Scots lose the game 2-1..but a win against Uruguay could see them qualify due to Denmark thumping Uruguay 6-1 Denmark then followed up that result by beating the Germans 2-0 Scotland needed a win and after about 90 seconds Uruguay were down to ten men they had 90 minutes to make history.....never happened finished 0-0 Scotland yet again failed to progress and along with Denmark and West Germany Uruguay also progressed along with the tag of being the dirtiest team ever So we get to England after a 1-0 defeat to Portugal and a bore draw against mighty Morocco...only notable for Ray Wilkins getting booked twice in 2 minutes second one for throwing the ball at the ref(or did he?) England were staring down the barrel of early elimination they needed a spark they got in the bandaged hand of Gary Lineker scoring a hat-trick against the Poles seeing England through Morocco actually won this group after beating Poland 3-1(true they did) and despite being beaten by England the Poles progressed Second Round Mexico beat Bulgaria 2-0 Belgium beat the Soviet Union in a world cup classic 4-3 after extra time (sure this game finished 7.am the next morning) Brazil eased past Poland 4-0 Argentina squeezed past Uruguay 1-0 Italy copped out 2-0 to the French West Germany left it late to beat Morocco(88th minute goal) Denmark imploded against the Spanish with Emilio Butragueno scoring 4 times England despatched Paraguay 3-0 Quarter Finals Brazil/France West Germany/Mexico England/Argentina Spain/Belgium not going to say a lot about 3 of them France beat Brazil(been called many things this game Classic don`t do it justice) after 90 mins 1-1 France won the penalty shoot out 4-3 West Germany also needed a penalty shoot out to beat Mexico 4-1 as did Belgium after a 1-1 draw Belgium won 5-4 now the main event England v Argentina certain tabloids were building this up as a grudge match citing the Falklands conflict 4 years previous this game was only a game of football blown out of all proportions by the gutter press here in the UK we all know what happened dont we game was basically going nowhere until the 51st minute an attempted flick back to Peter Shilton was pounced on by Maradonna heading in....replays showing it wasnt his big head it was his hand 4 minutes later he destroys the entire England back line only this time with his feet classic goal(don`t care what anyone says) Lineker after 81 gives England hope and after a remarkable save by Pumpido from John Barnes England were out so near but yet so far Semi Finals France/West Germany as in 1982 these two side met yet again only this time it was nowhere near the classic we had in Spain West Germany scoring after 9 and 89 minutes the kung fu king was still in goal for the Germans but was hardly called into action shame that...was looking forward to his karate moves(see the 1982 post) the other semi final was between Argentina and Belgium(no idea how they mad it to the semi finals) yet again old Diego showed the world that goal against England was no fluke he destroys the Belgium defence and sends Argentina to their second final The Final A great final Jose Luis Brown puts the Argies ahead after 23 minutes(interesting fact.....Brown had scottish ancestry ) Valdano in the 56th minute then makes it 2-0 Germany then start to play 74th minute K H Rummenigge pokes in from close range 7 minutes later Rudi Voller equalises great comeback from the Germans however the Argentinian Maestro had the last word inch perfect through ball to Burruchaga who slots it past Schumacher Argentina win 3-2 thanks for reading till next time one more to come any thought on the next one? RE: Thanks You Lot - WBA-Josh - 12-06-2018 Thanks for posting them Garry. How about the 1930 World Cup? Bomberbrown1968 was in his prime then so I’m sure he remembers it well and can help you. ![]() In all seriousness, I’d be interested in 1970 but it’s up to you. RE: Thanks You Lot - themaclad - 12-06-2018 As good as Maradona's goal was you have to remember Terry Fenwick was playing for England RE: Thanks You Lot - Arcane Astral Aeons - 12-06-2018 (12-06-2018, 22:39)themaclad Wrote: As good as Maradona's goal was you have to remember Terry Fenwick was playing for England anyone remember him? i don`t all i remember was a headache tablet called Phensic(sp) is that the same thing? RE: Thanks You Lot - themaclad - 12-06-2018 Fenwick played for QPR RE: Thanks You Lot - Bierzo Baggie - 12-06-2018 (12-06-2018, 23:30)themaclad Wrote: Fenwick played for QPR Fenwick was the last defender that Maradona dribbled past. When asked about the goal in interviews Maradona never remembers his name either! ![]() A few more from 1986. Bryan Robson's dislocated shoulder. Josimar's celebration after punting one in from 30 yards. And Denmark looking like they could go all the way with the majestic Preban Elkjaer (anybody remember him?) and also Jasper Olsen who went on to play for Man U. But it went horribly and unexpectedly wrong against Spain. Hilarious when shortarse Strachen couldn't get over the advertising hoardings! ![]() RE: Thanks You Lot - BaggieSteve - 13-06-2018 (12-06-2018, 23:45)Bierzo Baggie Wrote:(12-06-2018, 23:30)themaclad Wrote: Fenwick played for QPR If I remember correctly, Maradonna actually dribbled past Terry Butcher twice on his way to scoring that famous goal |
