World Cup 1994 - Arcane Astral Aeons - 11-06-2018

(is anyone actually reading my posts?)

this world cup was held between 17th June/17th July and held in the good old US of A
first time it was held in a country that didnt really have a recognised football league, could the mighty Americans pull of the seemingly impossible? and stage a great world cup?---not only did they pull it off but this goes down as one of the best ever
3.6 million fans attended the games a global audience of billions and great games to boot
the opening ceremony though was a total farce...Diana Ross doing her best impression of an England penalty taker by missing,so guy caught on camera behind Bill Clinton`s opening speech dozing off(well done that guy)
and so to the football
England were a no show-no Scotland either first time since 1974
Republic Of Ireland made it to their second World cup
this world cup had great games, great goals, and a first ever changing of a set of goalposts
a tragic OG--and the finals first penalty shoot out

Group A-Romania-Switzerland-USA-Columbia
Group B-Brazil-Sweden-Cameroon-Russia
Group C-Germany-South Korea-Spain-Bolivia
Group D-Nigeria-Bulgaria-Argentina-Greece
Group E-Mexico-Republic Of Ireland-Norway-Italy
Group F-Netherlands-Saudi Arabia-Belgium-Morocco

Opening game saw the 1990 winners(Germany)facing Bolivia a very dire game settled by a Klinsmann goal on the hour, also notable for the(i think)the first sending off in an opening game(Marco Etcheverry Bolivia)
this world cup also featured another "First" USA/Switzerland was the first W/C game to be played in an indoor arena
for the record it finished 1-1
Romania/Colombia produced one of those-"was it a cross was it a shot moments" whatever it was it was a superb goal from Georghe(sp) Hagi
and after a 4-1 battering by the Swiss, and a 1-0 win against the US Romania were through
the Swiss? err famous for actually having Micheal Bolton..AKA Sutter up front also qualified(please check out Micheal Bolton and Alain Sutter spot the difference?)
then came USA/Columbia.....0-0 cross comes in from the yanks left and Andreas Escobar sticks out a foot and directs it past his own keeper
USA go on to win the game 2-1
however this game had tragic consequences for Andreas Escobar on his return to Columbia he was shot dead as he left a cafe

and pause:

ireland were competing in their second finals
and having beaten the italians 1-0
were looking good, until they played Mexico-trailing 2-0 in 90000 degree heat(ok i added a few zeros) good old Jack Charlton tries to get John Aldridge on-cue the officials-and cue a tirade of foul mouth abuse from both player and manager-Jack was banned from the touchline for the final group game against Norway
despite this Ireland qualified

as i say this is only a brief look back
Russia/Cameroon is worth a mention for 2 reasons
firstly-Oleg Salenko became the first player to score FIVE goals in a w/c game
Roger Milla(him from the "lets dance around the corner flag and get flattened by my team-mates)became the oldest player to score in the finals, even Salenko`s 5 goals proved in vain as Russia departed

have to give Saudi Arabia a mention
after a narrow 2-1 loss to a less than impressive Dutch side
they then beat Morocco 2-1
cue Saeed-Al-Owairan.....he picks the ball up somewhere in Canada-dribbles past the entire Belgium side deciides to even dribble past their subs and slots the ball into the bottom corner......
best goal ever?

then we get that cheating Argentinian ...we should have know better
scores a worldy against Greece then ....that celebration in front of the camera......FIFA saw it we all saw it
that guy was on something illegal..and so it proved...he was banned...his international career as a cheat(sorry footballer)was over
don`t cry for me Argentina.....

other notes
Argentina were booted out by Romania in a 3-2 Romanian win notable for the fact that Maradona was captured on camera crying his eyes out
Mexico/Bulgaria had the unique scene of the goalposts being replaced Bulgaria winning 3-1 on penalties
Holland/Brazil a classic game the Dutch coming back from 2-0 down only to concede an 81st minute winner scored by some guy called Branco----Middlesbrough any one?

then came the major upset---
Bulgaria/Germany
easy Germany win right?.....wrong
after taking the lead through a dodgy german penalty
Bulgaria took over
a Stoichkov free kick and a superb Letchkov header send the krauts packing

THE FINAL
Brazil/Italy

this final was in a word---actually two words ******* awful
dire drab and a total waste of what was a very superb world cup
a great world cup let down by a final that had absolutely ZERO
yes Brazil won it on penalties(first final to be decided on spot kicks)

and that is my brief look back at 1994
if i have missed something feel free to add

i will do one more
thanks for reading

RE: World Cup 1994 - Bierzo Baggie - 12-06-2018

What I remember most from the 1994 tournament........

Jackie Charlton and his boys beating Italy.

Roberto Baggio’s pony tail.

Bulgaria being the international version of the crazy gang. Stoichkov, Balakov, Kostadinov, Ivanov, Kickyerbollocksov….

Coked-up Maradona’s crazy-eyed “face in the camera” celebration against Greece.

And Bebeto, Romario and Mazinho’s rather more gentle “rock the baby” celebration.

Jorge Campos’ bizarre psychedelic shirt.

That Saudi Arabian bloke dribbling through the entire Belgian team.
