Murder at the Vicarage: Albion's first-ever competitive trip to Watford ends in a 3-0 defeat, 11th September 1983

After last weekend's debacle against Huddersfield, relegation now seems not so much a matter of "if" but "when", and "in what manner". We remain seven points adrift, and apparently bereft of the will or wherewithal to survive. Alan Pardew remains at the helm for now, but is showing precious little to suggest that he's the man to lead us into May and beyond. Daniel Sturridge, our last great hope, is making Victor Anichebe look like the Bionic Man. Short of cloning a team of Chris Brunts, Albion are running out of options.

If there's a sniff of hope for us at Vicarage Road this Saturday, it may lie in the fact that a team approaching safety for the season could get complacent and slip up, allowing us to capitalise. However, Watford are still a couple of wins away from effective safety, and even if they weren't, there's little to suggest that the manager and players have it in them to deliver any kind of upset.

Not "if" but "when", and "in what manner". It'd be nice to imagine that after Brunty's intervention last weekend, some of this lot might just be shamed into showing some fight. We'll see.

Nice one, Ska'd! Love it Big Grin Big Grin

Almost passed caring; my one hope is that we can go down fighting and showing some pride

3 points every time.

Our next 5 including this one "should" be winnable if the team turns up in every game. What a turn around it would be if we could manage that!

They're getting the backing of a sold out away end with 2,200 heading down to support them and in spite of the bitterly cold weather and situation we find ourselves in, I'm surprisingly looking forward to heading down to Watford for this one. Let's hope Brunty's bollocking has done the trick and we see some commitment and a change from 4-4-2!

To anyone else travelling down I'd recommend The Moon Under the Water Wetherspoons & The Oddfellows as the best pre-match watering holes.

COYB!

Does anyone actually know what Brunty said?

As for the game, well every game is a do or die situation, so after Saturday we will all sigh, have a beer or ten, and wait for what the next months give us.

Not a lot me thinks. Angry

I'm again not expecting much. We have the games left and points available to stay up but we're so shit currently that we probably have less than 25%. We are ironically in the position where Tony Pulis would be the firefighter best prepared to keep us and then leave in the summer.

What I would play:
Foster
Nyom - Dawson - Hegazi - Brunt
Yacob
Burke - Krychowiak - Field - Rodriguez
Rondon

What I think AP will play:
Foster
Dawson - Hegazi - Evans
Phillips - Krycho - Barry - Brunt - Gibbs
Rondon - Rodriguez

1-0 to Watford and Alan Pardew deservedly sacked on Sunday morning.

Burke?
I know he's had little chance to make a claim for the team, but he's shown nothing in his series of 10 minutes to justify a place.
I actually wonder if he's got a twin brother and we got the wrong one!

I think there has to come a time this season when we have to stop sticking with underperforming players and Matt Phillips falls into that equation. That leaves us with Burke or McLean for the right wing and I'd prefer to see Burke out there. He may be a Championship player with potential but his raw pace could be a good outlet to stretch the play on the right wing.

In my team above Rodriguez is a wide forward on the left rather than a winger so he has the freedom to move into central positions to get close to Rondon. This leaves space outwide for Brunt to move into from left back. Therefore on the right wing we need a different type of winger, someone who can stay wide and stretch the play with direct pace. That is where Burke can excel.

I believe Burke will come good, he just needs some actual game time.  He's one of the only players we have that's actually willing to make runs forward and I know he's missed a couple one on ones but that's going to happen if you probably haven't even played an hour of football all season - it takes confidence as well as practice to bury those, and not being picked isn't going to give him either.  He's also still young and would be eager to prove himself and his ability.

Foster
Dawson - Gabr - Hegazi - Gibbs
Yacob
Krycho - Field
Burke - Rondon/Rodriguez - Brunt

Wingers can drop back to offer a more defensive 4141 if needs be.
