The Beast from the East - Dancingwilldoit - 27-02-2018 What a damp squib. Forecast for snowbombs and freezing cold at -10 degrees this week so way off the mark its a joke. We didn't even have a frost this morning with a light dusting of snow. Why does the met office have to big everything up then it just never happens or its so tame its not worth talking about? Ever since Michael Fish got egg on his face with his non hurricane forecast they have to go overboard. There are even schools closed here and in Sheffield based on met office threat to life and doom mongering and there's no snow for the poor kids to play in. The BBC have got cars driving round trying to find any trace or hint of the stuff this morning and have now given up. If you think we waste money on the Olympics Blue, the Met Office takes some beating. They keep trying long range forecasting, then when they get it wrong they say its very difficult to predict our weather??? Earlier this week they came out with the classic "its very difficult to forecast snow and where its going to fall" so what have they been doing the last 10 days telling us to expect 6' of snow and Armageddon? Every forecast they start by wasting half the time telling us what the weather had been like earlier that day - as if we didn't know. Why not just wind it all up and spend the money somewhere useful. The next time you need a weather forecast just stick your head out of the window or door and see what its doing at least you wont get it wrong. RE: The Beast from the East - themaclad - 27-02-2018 Lived through 11 weeks of continuous snow 62/63 never missed a days school soft as .... these days RE: The Beast from the East - Devongone - 27-02-2018 When the school heating broke down you wore your coat and gloves. 62/63 was lovely. Only down side was the Hope Valley Football league had to cancel its season because all the teams were more than three months behind with their fixtures and several of the pitches incorporated the outfield of cricket pitches ..... so they couldn't just extend the season. The team my dad ran were the best in the league so it was a bit of a disaster. Most of the Hope Valley teams weren't keen on a Chesterfield team coming top, so they didn't mind too much. RE: The Beast from the East - themaclad - 27-02-2018 Happy days RE: The Beast from the East - Dancingwilldoit - 27-02-2018 62/63 just happened to be the year where I lived at the time went smokeless ( remember smog ? not in the Hope Valley Dev ) I can remember ice on the inside of our windows which you had to scrape off to see what it was doing outside. Because my dad worked for the Elec Board as was, and got discount of electrical goods we ended up with a 2kw electric fire with artificial fibreglass coal and a red bulb jeez it was bloody freezing with 4 of us huddled round it trying to keep warm. My grandad came to the rescue, he worked for the GPO phones and turned up with some chopped up telephone poles. Don't know what they treated them with but my god did they burn. As you say happy days indeed. RE: The Beast from the East - bluepooch - 27-02-2018 The Met office are crap, they cant predict the weather very well especially snow ,even with all the technology to hand, so they give a worse case scenario ,that way there is no embarrassment as in '87. Also in this day of Health and Safety madness, schools only have to see a flake and its shut down the hatches . RE: The Beast from the East - spireitematt - 27-02-2018 Can't believe it. Top news story tonight is about SNOW!. London gets a flurry of snow and it goes into meltdown. 2010 was worse than this. RE: The Beast from the East - St Charles Owl - 27-02-2018 They have had a few inches on the east coast according to reports but they are saying the worst of it is to come tomorrow and into Thursday aren't they?? Out here they are exceptionally accurate with the weather forecast, a lot of the country gets extreme weather in winter and summer so it really can be a matter of life or death if they get it wrong. Of course today its like armageddon here in LA because there is rain forecast and Southern Californians just don't know what to do to survive when the clouds drop a bit of precipitation!!! What's the temperature in LA? RE: The Beast from the East - St Charles Owl - 27-02-2018 Its a ridiculously cold 15c!!! Californians are having to wear coats its that cold for them!!! That is a bit below average for this time of year but its because its cloudy and raining. Last weekend we were at 24c but the average for this time of year is about 20c. Rain just causes so many issues here, we can go 4-5 months without any rain, so when it does rain its runs on the surface rahter than soaking in and the roads become very slippery as all the crap that builds up gets wet. |
