Dennis to Barnsley True or False? - Devongone - 22-01-2018

Rumours are circulating on Twitter apparently that Dennis is on his way to Barnsley. To be honest I think he would be a desperate signing for them. But if they are going to lump us some money I don't see us turning it down. We just don't.

The trouble is the money NEVER finds its way back into the team.

Perhaps over-confident after Dayle Grubb's immediate impact at Forest Green from Weston Super Mare, I'd have to use one of the contracts available to lure Jacob Hazel back to have another go at full-time football. Scored again on Saturday, two the previous week.

Even Scottish clubs are scouting English non-league. Hamilton Academicals, who used to be known for youth development, are signing Carshalton's Mickel Miller who has been grabbing headlines and much praise with his 25 goals so far this season. Carshalton play at the Southern equivalent of Frickley's level and have a similar level of success. Mickel Miller is just about keeping up with Jacob Hazel as a goalscorer too.

From Joe Rawson its not Baarnsleh but Bdafud interested. No suitable off yet.
If a substantial and suitable offer comes in Uncle Dave has two choices ,either take the money and hope he gets a sale anyway or invest it back into the team ,have faith in Jack and hope it improves us enough to increase the saleability of the club .

I have faith that Jack is well-bright enough to have known a Dennis departure was possible and he'll have planned for it. I think he knows he can't be relying on O'Grady for goals.

I'd still love Jack to have a little gamble on Jacob Hazel on top of whoever he fancies himself. There are contracts available. The lad only ever got two games to prove himself and he's making a major statement, similar to Dennis's goalscoring rate at Curzon Ashton. If he doesn't fancy Jacob there are a lot of other non-league names worth a little gamble to keep us up.

I don't rate Dennis as a signing for Bradford either. I'd take Mo' Eisa from Cheltenham if I were them.

COG features in a brief appearance in the Yeovil video just before their equalizer. He swipes his foot at the ball, completely miss kicks it then stands there holding his thigh mortally wounded. It almost resulted in a goal - at least his defending is as good as his goalscoring, it was nearly but not quite.

Yeah and I wanted to try him at centre back when we were struggling for one .......... and he was clearly never going to make an impact on our goals for total. Shows you can't always be right. Or often in my case.

Whisper it quietly, I think sometimes Pooch might be wrong too.

We have to offload OG if possible ,comes across as a nice guy but there must be better out there for the money surely !.I thought dropping down two leagues would improve his goals tally but to be honest he's been bitterly disappointing so far , its the classic ,'his legs have gone' scenario and I think he will struggle to find a League team after he leaves us .Another SEB situation except at least SEB scored goals .
Dev your obsession with bringing in non league players is getting worrying, you have to realise the majority are playing non league for a reason .On the other hand I do admire your knowledge of the subject ,maybe the club could employ you as our south west non league scout ? I would if I was the owner and give you a bonus if we employ any of your recommendations .

RE: Dennis to Barnsley True or False? - Devongone - 23-01-2018

Players in non-league ARE there for a reason, because professional development programmes are so wasteful. Most of them are the cast-offs of League clubs at ages 15-18. But League clubs get it wrong almost as often as they get it right. Equally 31-year-old Championship players are touted around League 2 for the best wage possible by their agents FOR A REASON. My simple logic is that the 21-year-old ripping it up in non-league is a better bet than the has-been whose desire is dubious at best.

Pooch, it is kinda nice of you to say the club should employ someone like me, but if the club were clever and original it could scout around the nation for free. People spend half their lives uploading boring films of themselves from their smartphone to Facebook or Instagram or wherever. Why not turn fans into scouts everywhere? Why not set up a FAN SCOUT website? Why not reward recommendations as you say if they come to something?

Of course we can still recruit players from higher divisions or our own level ......... but youngsters who have fallen through the very leaky net or non-leaguers who everyone in their home area think should be full-time pro's are a cheap and productive source of talent. And other teams use it better than us. Why should Peterborough always be first in the queue for every non'league talent? They are prepared for the gamble to fail ..... and sometimes it does. But sometimes you can get a Sam Clucas, as Mansfield did from Hereford. The trick is don't sell him to a Chesterfield for next-to-nothing.

In playing terms young non-leaguers have a big advantage. From 17 or 18 they are playing against men and they have to learn fast. By 21 they've had three seasons of proper competitive matches that a 21-year-old at a league club generally lacks. Big clubs are trying to create players to play at their level. IMO that we generally need players with the grit to play at ours.

If Dayle Grubb at the age of 26 can step up to the league and plonk two in on his home debut for FGR why not Jacob Hazel? I first mentioned him as a bit of a wind-up, but he's kept the goals flowing freely. It is every week. Matt Briggs made the England squad, was almost certainly our most talented player, but he's come off the rails, wouldn't a Jacob Hazel from the opposite end of the spectrum be a wiser gamble? Ask Joey Barton, he knows all about gambling.

Hazel always looked the part. Sometimes players bodies outgrow their mind set. When you grow up, it takes a while for the brain to catch up with the fact that your feet are size 13 and it hurts like hell when you kick the corner of a coffee tale or the edge of a door !!! But sooner or later the brain catches up and can put those big feet and that bulked up weight to better use, I think they call it late development. IMO he would be worth a punt. JL should know him and his capabilities as they were in the same team for a spell. Apart from Dennis we don't have another fit striker on our books. Am sure he would be better than COG whose development went backwards.

I agree there are gems in there if they can be weedled out ,e g Kristian .How old is Hazel ? While on the subject whats Charlie Raglan doing nowadays ?
Peterborough were paying big money though Dev for some of these players ,money we cant afford unless we sell Dennis and plough it back in ,didn't they break the non league record for George Boyd some years ago ? I think something like 350k comes to mind.Money well spent if clubs are willing to gamble .
I bet you could name quite a few from non league who are now playing Championship and higher .

Surprised teams higher in the Championship aren't interested in Dennis.

Blue, Charlie Raglan is at Oxford United but hasn't made an appearance this season yet.
